Dillon Maples threw a bullpen session this morning and looked good. I doubt that he will be held back too much longer,

Also, Hayden Simpson (Cubs 2010 #1 draft pick) threw "live" BP today and his curve ball was really exploding. I don't know what the velocity was on his fastball (and that is an issue), but at least he was throwing free & easy.

AZ Phil - I believe Izaac Garsez has been released or has retired (haven't seen anything on BA...he did not go to Spring Training and was seen at his alma-mater's baseball games over the weekend. I believe he is finishing up his schooling.

BHR: Thanks for the info regarding Garsez. That would explain why he's not in Minor League Camp.

Every year there are one or two guys who don't report, usually older college players who have read the writing on the wall. Sometimes the player will officially file retirement papers, but if he doesn't he will eventually get placed on the Restricted List for a couple of years (keeping the player from signing with another MLB organization or playing independent ball) and then will be quietly released.

apologies, I can't figure out where the open bold or strong tag is that's screwing up the front page.

getting work visas or resolving visa issues is sometimes slow. it wouldn't be the only team it's happening with this year or years before. i'd find it hard to believe torreyes's career has dead ended in organized ball, especially. could be a family issue... *shrug*

John Sickels Top 150 with major league ETA. "18) Javier Baez , SS, Chicago Cubs, 2015 Baez has some issues but his bat speed really impresses me. 25) Jorge Soler , OF, Chicago Cubs, 2014 44) Albert Almora, OF, Chicago Cubs, 2015 98) Dan Vogelbach, 1B, Chicago Cubs, 2015 Vogelbach has an outstanding bat and could rank much, much higher in 2014 once he proves himself in full-season ball. 112) Arodys Vizcaino, RHP, Chicago Cubs, 2013" http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/3/13/4095252/minor-league-ball-top-…

Ex-Cub RHP Angel Guzman is a Pitching Coach at Minor League Camp.

I suspect he will be an Assistant Pitching Coach at Extended Spring Training once the regular season starts, helping David Rosario and Anderson Tavarez with the EXST pitchers, and Rick Tronerud with the Rehab Group.

Guzman should be able to offer lots of helpful advice to kids rehabbing from injuries, since he spent much of his career at Fitch Park doing just that.

Junior Lake out 4-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his top rib on his right side.

Scott Baker to start Sunday.

cubs had bases loaded with 0 outs in the 3rd...0 runs scored. cubs are season-ready 2 weeks early. swank.

Italy has been a cool story (hey look, USA can field a second team better than a lot of countries' first team), but I admit I won't be disappointed if they lose tonight and Rizzo gets back to Cubs camp in one piece. I think I feel like a lot of baseball fans in that I enjoy the Classic (maybe more than ever this year) but I don't want guys from my favorite team playing.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
