2015 Cubs Minor League Spring Training Rosters (Updated 4/3)

2015 CUBS MINOR LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING ROSTERS (last updated 4-3-2015):

NOTEROSTERS AT MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ARE FLUID. Minor League players are often initially assigned to a squad one or even two levels above where they will ultimately be assigned once the regular season starts. Minor League Camp roster assignments are based on several factors, including the player's position as it relates to the specific needs of the organization, and the player's age, amount of professional experience, and previous season's performance (including any time spent at a post-season Instructional League). As players are sent to Minor League Camp from the Major League squad during the course of Spring Training, there are corresponding roster moves made at Minor League Camp as players are either moved down a level or released. Occasionally a player or a pitcher will be moved up a level during the course of Minor League Camp, but such an occurrence is rare.

Comments

Quite a bit of activity at Minor League Camp as Spring Training winds down.

At this point, rosters are being tweaked, with players sometimes directly exchanging slots to balance affiliate rosters going into the regular season.

All four of the "full season" affiliates (AAA Iowa, AA Tennessee, Hi-A Myrtle Beach, and Lo-A South Bend) must cut their Active Roster down to 25 by Minor League Opening Day Thursday 4/9, but the teams leave Arizona on Monday, so the rosters will probably be pretty much finalized by Sunday.

IOWA: Active Roster stands at 28. OF John Andreoli has been moved back up to Iowa from Tennessee, and OF Pin-Chieh Chen goes back down to Tennessee from Iowa (they had changed places just a couple of days ago). Also, RHRP Tony Zych has been released, and LHRP Francisley Bueno and RHRP Daniel Bard have not been on the field this week (present status unknown).

TENNESSEE
: Active Roster stands at 28. Catchers Willson Contreras and Erick Castillo have been moved up to Tennessee from Myrtle Beach, and C-INF Ben Carhart and OF Kevin Brown move down to Myrtle Beach from Tennessee. Also, RHRP Justin Amlung and LHRP Austin Kirk have been released, and RHRP Jose Rosario has not been on the field this week (present status unknown).

MYRTLE BEACH
: Active Roster stands at 28. 2B Andrew Ely and C-1B Alberto Mineo have been moved up to Myrtle Beach from South Bend, INF David Bote and C-INF Jordan Hankins have been moved down to South Bend from Myrtle Beach, and RHRPs Brad Markey, Michael Wagner, and Ben Wells have been sent to Extended Spring Training from Myrtle Beach. Also, RHRP Lars Huijer has not been on the field this week (present status unknown).

SOUTH BEND
: Active Roster stands at 27. OF Charcer Burks has been moved back up to South Bend from Extended Spring Training, and RHPs Scott Frazier, David Garner, Trevor Graham, Tanner Griggs, Corbin Hoffner, and Dillon Maples, and LHP Sam Wilson have been sent to Extended Spring Training from South Bend. Also, INF Tanner Witt has been released.

EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING
: Active Roster stands at 58, but there is no roster limit at Extended Spring Training.

Mark Zagunis, ex-C AZ Phil: MZ No longer catching? Doesn't that hurt his prospect status?

[ ]

In reply to by Cubster

CUBSTER: Mark Zagunis is a good hitter, an excellent baserunner with plus-speed, and he has a plus-arm and looked very good in the outfield at Instructs last Fall. He also is an offense-first catcher with below-average defensive skills behind the plate (other than his arm), and (unlike Kyle Schwarber) he does not display the passion to be a catcher that would be needed to make himself into a decent receiver. So I suspect the Cubs see Zagunis as a legitimate outfield prospect, and that since he would seem to be a longshot to ever make it as a catcher, why waste time playing him there?

Tyler Colvin opts out of his Marlins contract. I suspect he is looking to have dinner with Ty Griffin, Earl Cunningham, Ryan Harvey, Hayden Simpson and Mark Pawelek

[ ]

In reply to by Cubster

Colvin would have to pick up the tab, Cubster. He had a couple of pretty good seasons in 2010 and 2012 (Colorado). He does have 49 HRs in the majors. The last couple of seasons, I think he's had back problems. None of the other guys you mention sniffed triple-A. Cunningham, Pawelek and Simpson maxed out at A+.

hamilton NOT getting suspended via arbitrator suggestion. MLB not happy about it and will probably try to address it in some way. interesting. fwiw, he turned himself in before testing positive for a drug of abuse (non-performance enhancing)...so it's in weird territory.

Drake Britton clears waivers and goes to Iowa. Clears a 40 man roster spot too. Does that mean Herrera is going to be added and made the 25 man roster? Sweeney vs Szczur all that remains to be answered?

[ ]

In reply to by Rob G.

largest FA deal in twins history...hell of a hit for a small market team who already spent more money than they should have on mauer (though the twins keep their loot his part of the suspension, btw). e.santana doesn't deny he tested positive, but he's denying he did it on purpose and has no idea how he got it in his system. he's willing/ready to start his suspension and get it over with.

[ ]

In reply to by crunch

I've always found it a little weird that the clubs are let off the hook on the salary. I recommend that the salary of the suspension should go to the league and be used for drug education, testing research and prevention fund. It would make the clubs have a more vested interested in signing and maintaining clean players. Also, it would eliminate the awkward situation such as A-Rod and now Josh Hamilton where the club is hoping the league levies a longer suspension just so the team can save some money on a bad contract. It doesn't apply to Santana situation, but usually the club has benefited from the chemically enhanced performance, so they should carry a burden of the financial penalty.

Respect for Montreal. They are supporting the Jays, a LONG standing-o for Martin, and filling stadium for two meaningless games against Cincinnati just begins to describe it. People who know better than I state that it's a major league market. I saw enough empty Expos games on TV to doubt it, but I may be starting to believe.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

  • crunch (view)

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

  • Eric S (view)

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

  • crunch (view)

    boo.

  • crunch (view)

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

  • crunch (view)

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it

wow.  what a blown call.  go cubs, i guess.
