Cubs @ Angels: Lester vs Heaney (Game 2)

It’s so easy...

CHC (1-0): LHP Jon Lester
LAA (0-1): LHP Andrew Heaney
First pitch: 9:05pmCT

Arrieta continues his dominance, and the line-up is lengthy and potent. (That’s what she said.) Baseball certainly looks easy, when everyone follows the script.

Now the Cubs go for the two-game opening series sweep, as Lester looks to start strong. The Angels know Lester well (27-109, .248) from his time in Beantown. The old Pujols is 5-12 against him. None of the Cubs have faced Heaney.

With Montero’s HR, Kevin and Ryno take the early lead in the Predictions Contest.

After a day off tomorrow, it’s back to AZ and the NL for a four-game set and Lackey vs. De La Rosa.

Go, Cubs!

Can I just barf a little bit about a CBSSports.com article about Chase Utely's "illegal" slide at home plate? I don't see a damn thing wrong with the play and then I go and read the comments and people are just crapping on him left and right. Dirtiest player, he should be banned, etc. Its like the younger generation doesn't understand baseball and the Tejada slide last year was more Tejadas fault than Utely. Doing his pirouette and totally not realizing a runner is coming in hard to break up the double play, like they have done for the last 100 years. That is stupidity on Tejada's part....i remember baserunners going 4 or 5 feet outside the bag to take out a fielder. Now its this home plate slide and just like the second base slide he is still well within reach of the bag/plate and trying to make the catcher in this instance mess up the play. That is stuff taught since little league. Utely plays baseball like it should be played, I don't understand this new attitude where players cant touch anyone anymore.

Why is that baseball as it should be played? The slide into Tejada looked like it was closer to being a Bruce Lee flying kick than an attempt to reach the base. The slide into home is clearly more of an attempt to interfere with the defender, albeit not with significant contact, than to evade a tag. It's not like players aren't allowed to make contact at second base under the new rule. They just can't Matt Holliday it and slide way past the bag, way wide of the bag, or super late--i.e., they can't merely pass off a slide tackle as a slide into the bag. From my perspective, fewer injuries would be a good thing. I think it was Rob G. a few years ago who pointed at that baseball is not a better game for missing a season of Buster Posey in his prime. I'd say the same goes for Addison Russell or Kyle Schwarber.

rules that prevent injuries are fine by me, if you want to watch people break bones, the UFC is always there. I realize people want to get their football/bloodsport fix with baseball as well and enjoyed when the Pistons and Knicks were clotheslining Jordan in the 80's and 90's, but it's not why I watch baseball.

Utley's slide versus Tejada last year was awful, but at the time it was part of the culture of the game although I thought his was particularly egregious.  I'm glad they're enforcing the rule and changed it. Utley's slide on Monday was pretty obvious, but when you played for 20 years one way, it's going to take time to change (it also looked like he was kind of wisely trying to run inside the baseline to possibly block the throw seeing where the catcher set up and instinct took over to slide at catcher). Utley is/was a great player regardless of how he slides into a base and there will still be great players and great hustlers and guys that want to win that no longer have to injure other players to prove it.

Also rules that penalize Bautista for a horseshit play like last night are also fine by me, it wasn't dangerous by any means, just pathetic looking...similar to A-rod's glove slap a few years back.

Funny thing is I believed I argued that the slide that took Posey out wasn't all that bad at the time, everyone was just freaking out cause a good player got hurt. It was certainly not out of the ordinary at the time and Posey did field the ball like a chump on that one. But it spurred a good change in the game, concussions and broken bones don't really get a rise out of me much more, but I've probably evolved a bit since my younger days.

Uhhh you might want to watch the video again of Utely and Tejada. Flying kick? He was sliding low to the ground to break up the double play. There was no flying kick and Tejada was oblivious to the runner, a good SS knows they are going to be taken out on a play like that and he just kind of took it. Just because 1 guy is an idiot and gets injured it doesn't make a guy like Utely a bad person. He is playing within the rules......they didn't change the rules all the other times guys were sliding 5 feet outside the bag with no chance to even tag it to take out the double play chance. Utely slides well within reach of the bag and takes out a player like he should.

I agree that there's no reason for Utley to be a villain here. And my flying kick depiction does seem inaccurate. What I should have emphasized was how late that slide was, which seems to be illegal under the new rules (not clearly illegal at the time). There is no need, as you pointed out initially, to make Utley out to be malicious. His slide into home the other night seems *maybe* illegal now, but not dangerous as far as I can tell. But I do think the new rules are probably good if they do these three things: 1. Clarify to both runners and defenders what they should do in a double play situation so that they can each respond accordingly. (And I agree that under the old rules there are cases to be made that Tejada and Kang both misplayed those situations.) 2. Push the game away from tackling defenders (which seems to me to be a real oddity in baseball) and more towards who can get to the base more quickly. 3. Keep players safer from collision injuries.

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).
