Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Hammel vs Ray (Game 4)

Lackey gets lit up, Schwarber goes down, and the Cubs bats make ‘em pay.<--break->CHC (3-0): RHP Jason Hammel
AZ (1-3): LHP Robbie Ray
First pitch: 8:40pmCT

Apart from Heaney’s bloody nose--I suspect the gauze will not make it to Cooperstown--the first two games were almost boring. Yesterday’s was interesting--too interesting. A sprained ankle for Schwarber is the best-case scenario, after what looked more like a knee injury. UPDATE: Schwarber is out for the year with fully torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his left knee.

Schwarber was supposed to catch Hammel, so that experiment is on hold. The D’Backs are 11-48 off of Hammel. Goldschmidt is 3-8 with a HR.

Ray faced the Cubs last September in Chicago, when he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings and took the 2-0 loss. (That’ll teach him to match up against Arrieta.) Fowler is 3-6 with a HR.

Hendricks vs. Greinke tomorrow.

Go, Cubs!--and stay safe.

Is it too soon to quit drinking in my post-Schwarber despair?  I feel like I should continue on for at least a few more days....

kawasaki not in the iowa lineup tonight...other likely callups are in the lineup.

Bummer, probably an end to his catching and OF career...pray for a DH in NL or either him or Rizzo will get traded at some point (obviously a couple years down the line before that unfolds and they'll say all the right things until then so as not to devalue him, but that's where this is headed imo).

Schwarber in LF seemed like a temporary (like maybe 3-4 years) proposition at best, given his body type. Didn't think a knee injury would come so soon, of course. I'm sure the front office will worry about where he fits in defensively *after* he gets healthy enough to play in games. Which won't be until at least next year. And now I'm crying again.

with rizzo under one hell of a generous contract until 2021 there's really not much to be done with schwarb except trade him if he can't handle LF once he comes back. sure, they could trade rizzo, but he's making 7/7/11/14.5/14.5 2017-2021 and wow...it would take something spectacular to pry that from the cubs given that he's a lefty doing killer things with the bat and glove. that said, schwarb may be able to handle LF adequately with a CF'r that can cover the position as a plus defender. time will tell what he can and cannot do. sigh. also, there's that whole "every team goes DH" thing that seems to be inevitable coming up in the future.

Figured we'd face a devastating injury this year...just didn't think it would be the 3rd game. So, so, sad for Schwarber. Great player and by all accounts a great all around guy. I tend to think the Cubs will be fine without him overall, but certainly lowers the margin of error for any more issues or injuries to come. Yuck.

Anyone who wants to be depressed about Schwarber can come drink with me in Parachat.

Get well soon, Kyle! Next man up. We have a game tonight.

This team should completely abandon the sac bunt, and have pitchers just take 3 strikes when men are on base and thus avoid bunting into a double play. Just awful.

ross "who?" stripling has a no hitting going through 7 for the dodgers...1st MLB appearance, AA highest he's pitched. 91 pitches.

This is a sad day, and fuck you baseball gods. While "stuff happens" in baseball, I feel that Shwarbs not knowing really what he was doing in LF helped contribute to the situation.

it was hit in a "perfect storm" area to make something like this happen...deep and near the border of LF and CF in an away-game park. schwarb was moving much slower than fowler (obviously), and fowler was going full-on...it looks like schwarber never saw fowler and fowler didn't see schwarb until he was a few feet more than arm's length away (while moving very fast and going down for the ball). either guy vocally calling one or the other off would be a moot issue on this play given how fast fowler was going and how close they were to each other before anyone realized an it would be an issue. fowler being a speeding missile and a ball hit where both the LF and CF could legitimately make a claim for it being their play...sigh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkb5U-PzgR0

Hindsight is 20-20 but if you had heard my discussion with my wife when the game started I said something about how having Schwarber in that Chase outfield made me nervous. I wasn't necessarily thinking injury, I was just finding it unsettling - I didn't really know why until I saw him get tangled up out there. The problem is that he wasn't an MLB-ready catcher, either. Once he gets his mojo back, and I'm sure he will, I suspect he'll need to learn some first base. He'll also just have to get back out there to left field and learn how to play it. He seems like a great kid and I am going to root for him big time when he gets back.

I didn't catch the end...but wtf is Cahill doing in the game in a high leverage 9th inning? Was Rondon unavailable?

Going 1-10 with RISP doesn't help. Had to be a bummer of a day to play with the Schwarber news. Um, KB? Any time, bud. The season started a few days ago.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
