Cubs @ Rockies - Wood vs Matzek; Game 3 Thread

The Cubs travel for the first time this year to the thin air of Denver, Colorado.

Travis Wood vs Tyler Matzek

#Fowler CF*Dickerson LF
Soler RFTulowitzki SS
*Rizzo 1BArenado 3B
Castro SS*Gonzalez RF
Olt 3BRosario 1B
Szczur LFStubbs CF
Castillo CHundley C
Wood P*Matzek P
#Alcantara 2BLeMahieu 2B

The Rockies were the popular choice for worst team in the league to start the season, but they took that chip and beat the living beejeezus out of the Brewers outscoring them 20-6 ON THE ROAD. Now they come back home and face homer happy Travis Wood. Wood's last game in Coors actually didn't go too bad at all, giving up 3 ER in 6 IP on August 5th last year....of course that lineup didn't have Tulo or Cargo in it. But Wood's career numbers over 13 IP at Coors is still just a 4.15 ERA with just 1 HR allowed, so at least so far, he seems to been able to navigate the thin air.

As for the Cubs, Matzek might be the only lefty they face over the first two weeks, so Maddon got starts in for Szczur, Olt and Beefy today. Prior to the game, Justin Grimm was placed on the disabled list with a right forearm strain and Brian Schlitter was called up. Both teams opted for the suddenly chic pitcher-batting-8th...VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!!

Comments

Here's the thing about the whole pitcher-batting-eighth strategy. It only works when the ninth hitter is significantly better than the eighth hitter. According to The Book, in an AL-style lineup where the drop-off of talent is slow through the bottom slots in the batting order, you should probably just bat your players by decreasing productivity. So is Travis Wood a significantly worse hitter than Alcantara? Probably not.

i find it funny that the side-effect of this strategy makes maddon move guys up in the 2/3 slots that would ordinarily be hitting 3/4. the meh-ness of the pitcher hitting 8th is tamed by getting dangerous hitters further up in the lineup because one of his "table setters" is hitting in the 9 slot rather than the 1 or 2 slot. let's keep in mind this is a guy who ran desmond jennings out in the 1 slot for years based almost exclusively on his speed vs the rest of the team regardless of his performance. there's a bit of "old" with the "new" in maddon's lineup strategies. i'm more than willing to live with the pitcher batting 8th if it means he's going to treat the 2/3 slot like he is currently. i like the tradeoff up front more than i dislike the tradeoff at the back.

gee I hope...think Soler and Rizzo both go yard today.

I've got Soler and Tulo in Beat the Streak.*

*current streak of 0, so yeah.

ancient software that was slow to run especially with ads

like having comments on game on front page in thread

someone find me a free option that doesn't suck and you have experience with because I don't have time to test it and I'll consider putting a chat link back up

-edit- And no more Trans recaps

Is Yahoo statrracker working for anyone? It loads, but doesn't seem to update for me across multiple browsers.

Derek Holland left game with shoulder injury after one inning.

Travis Wood rumors begin in 3...2...1

Looks like we won't have this guy much longer...Matzek already over 60 pitches through 3 innings... Once the relievers start coming in is when playing the Rockies really becomes fun!

Olt and Castro are killing the Cubs today. Rockies bring in Gandolf the purple in from the bullpen.

"CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Johnny Cueto "is believed to be seeking $200 million, or thereabouts," in a long-term contract." looks like he's looking 8+ years with that kind of number being thrown around. he very recently turned 29, fwiw.

Castro with his "Addison Russell" is calling fielding play of the game.

Jackson good in this role. He can bring everything he's got full steam and he kept the ball down.

MAKE THEM GET A HIT WITH RISP, MADDON!!!!!

that's my guess on what the comments on the Cubs facebook page look right about now...

Pre-Bryant, with the pitcher hitting 8th, the Cubs are averaging exactly 1.00 runs per game. I blame the pitchers for not pitching a shutout every game.

3 runs scored in 3 games, just ain't gonna get it done. Maybe Maddon should pass out those big black glasses to his hitters.

Iowa was 1-for-10 last night with RISP, so they are teaching well down on the farm. Russell has 2 errors already?

Some of my Sox friends asked me about Samardzija and I said he will dominate weak teams like the Twins. /any ways

m.matheny (STL) is using his 5th pitcher for 5 batters in a row (technically 6 if you count the initial starting pitcher)...because he's good at doing "dude, what are you doing?" stuff. he's got his closer in the 8th with 1 out and a man on 1st, STL leading by 1. i have no idea what matheny is doing this year, but he makes a variety of weird moves almost every game so far.

"he's got his closer in the 8th with 1 out and a man on 1st" Don't be surprised if you see the great Maddonini do that sometimes. I've seen quotes by him that have suggested that there are times in the game, like in the 8th inning - where the closer might be the guy you go to because that may end up being a game turning point. I tend to agree that with that but the Cubs have, potentially, more than one closer, so that makes it sort of a moot point.

just waiting to hear patrick wisdom and masterboney are spotted at the airport going in opposite directions...

aj puk going for the marlins (lefty)...gotta imagine we'll see wisdom in the lineup.

someone has to make room for taillon, too.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

  • crunch (view)

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

  • crunch (view)

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

  • crunch (view)

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).
