Stewart Stick Helps Cubs Whip A's at Fitch Park

Ian Stewart singled, doubled, drove-in a run, and scored another, Jacob Rogers singled twice and scored twice, Garrett Schlecht hammered an RBI double and walked, and Justin Marra ripped an RBI single, walked, and scored a run, leading the Cubs to a 7-4 victory over the Athletics in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

Continuing his Extended Spring Training rehab assignment, Stewart played 3B for six innings and batted five times (once in each of the first five innings), going 2-5. He grounded out 3-U in his first AB, struck out swinging in his 2nd and 5th PA, roped a line-drive single to right in his 3rd AB, and crushed an RBI double into the RF corner his 4th time up. He didn't handle any chances at 3rd base, but he ran the bases at full tilt, showing no ill effects from the quad strain that sidelined him for most of MLB Spring Training.

The Defensive Play of the Game featured (once again) CF Rashad Crawford, who sprinted at full speed toward the infield and then made a diving catch in short center of what would otherwise have been a bloop single.

Slapped with a five-game suspension following an on-the-field incident in a game at Clearwater a couple of days ago, Daytona Cubs RF Jorge Soler is now at Fitch Park. He took BP on Field #1 with the recent-arrivals from the Dominican Academy (Acosta, Caro, K. Encarnacion, and F. Sanchez) during the EXST game. Whether he will remain in Mesa beyond the five-game FSL suspension remains to be seen...

CRUNCH: The Iowa Cubs have no lefties in their bullpen, so don't be surprised if Rosscup gets moved up sooner rather than later.

Also, LHRP Hunter Cervenka (acquired from Boston in the Marlon Byrd deal last season, but sidetracked during Minor League Camp with a forearm strain) was throwing 93-94 MPH yesterday at Talking Stick, so he should be about ready to leave Arizona and move up to AA Tennessee (especially if Rosscup gets promoted to Iowa).

A-rod's in trouble

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/13/sports/baseball/baseball-believes-ale…;

Investigators for Major League Baseball have uncovered what they believe is evidence that a representative of Alex Rodriguez purchased medical records from a person connected to a South Florida anti-aging clinic that is suspected of providing performance-enhancing drugs to a number of major leaguers, according to two people briefed on the matter.

"According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, Carlos Quentin will be suspended eight games for charging the mound against Zack Greinke on Thursday night." what a crock of shi... richie sexson got 6 games for charging the mound and throwing his helmet at the pitcher...youk got 5 games charging porcello and throwing his helmet at him. maybe if quentin threw his helmet he would have gotten 2-3 less games suspended. hell, juan marichal got 8 games for going after roseboro with a f'n bat.

blake dewitt getting his 1st AB as a brave...2 on (1st/2nd), 0 out, top 9th, down by 2. lulz...they have him sac bunt.

The day before yesterday I was pretty annoyed with Castro's at bat against Romo. Yesterday, it was almost like he was talking to himself while facing Romo again, saying, "oh no you don't - not again" as Romo led off trying to get him fishing again on the lower outside of the plate. I was listening to the SF guys because I enjoy them and I was surprised Krukow didn't mention the change in Castro's approach - they were more concerned with the seagulls - but that at bat was very heartening. Once Romo got behind in the count, Krukow thought Romo would have to challenge him and he did, and Castro hit it pretty good - luckily Pagan really hates that wall.

Fukikawa on 15 day disabled list? Those James Russell for closer rumors will really heat up now.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
