The thin air and the thin pitching of Colorado was enough to wake up the Cubs bats last night as they exploded for 9 runs including home runs by Castro and Olt and leadoff man Dexter Fowler getting on-base 4 times. The bad news is that Mike Olt got hit by a pitch in the wrist in the 9th, luckily nothing got broken though so he'll probably only miss a few days. That would leave playing time for Tommy La Stella, but he's suffering from a left side strain which sounds like something that could turn into a left oblique injury which could mean a few months on the shelf. None of us will still make the Cubs call up Kris Bryant though. Hell, they're even having Beefy try some grounders at 3B in case of emergency.

the marlins had 2 players break their fingers on 2 separate plays today...jeff mathis (C) and don kelly (1st) that's "dude really" as hell...

kendrick has a 88mph fastball and almost nothing off-speed is breaking well. this is kinda ugly because of the off-speed stuff.

yeah, it's not his velocity that i'm concerned about as much as the lack of break on his off-speed stuff (because colorado). he's not throwing BP out there, but he's getting a lot of hits/fouls/contact and seemingly throwing a lot more fastballs because of the lack of break (especially the last 2 innings). t.wood was getting good break on his stuff...not going so slickly for hendricks today. either way it's colorado and anyone can blow it at any time without trying too hard anyway.

Well, I take back the criticism somewhat. He is drawing some walks. With kids I do know it's a process, and he's still finding his way. That was obviously a big walk yesterday. And the Maddonini likes him, and he knows a wee bit more about baseball than I do.

Turned off game in the eighth down 5-3. 20 minutes later ... "wait, isn't Hawkins their closer?" Turn back on, 6-5. :)

Bullpen big on this win. <<<< understatement EDIT: Dexter Fowler would like to comment on that.

I feel like the Cubs are okay against mediocre pitching, but lacking when it comes to the best pitchers. Maybe it's like this with all teams. But yeah, I'm starting to wonder now what Kris Bryant will add to the team. If he can hang with the best pitchers in the world, even if he can hit 275 with power, he makes the Cubs a dangerous team in the NL Central.

I've heard a lot of chatter in ST and the first week of the season about ways to increase offense; one way would be mlb reminding umpires that pitches 4 inches outside aren't strikes...Rizzo looks like he's about to blow a gasket every time he gets rung up on them

Didn't watch much of Saturday or Sunday's game as the Cubs in April take a back seat to the Masters, but good to see them come back and get the series win. What made it even sweeter is the comeback against LaToya Hawkins. Seen that movie many times before, glad it is finally a happy ending for the Cubs. Also glad to see Bryant doing well in minors and not moping around. In 2 years when team is in the playoffs, missing the first 2 weeks of season will be an after thought. Glad to see Theo stick to his guns and do what is best long term for the organization. See you on April 20th Kris.

Don't know what games you've been watching (or, I guess maybe you haven't?) but the Cubs have not done too shabbily against "You can't do what I do" Hawkins left town. They handled pretty well for the most part since he left for the Giants. In fact, one night in particular, I was one of the booing crowd on a return to the North Side as he imploded allowing the Cubs to come back and get the W. 2010 Cubs OPS 1.220, 2011 .700, [2012 no games], 2013 .000ERA (6PA's), 2014 .573 OPS

It is only 5 games, so we shouldn't over-react either positively or negatively. That being said, 3-2 has to feel a lot different than 2-3 in the clubhouse. Good tone setter early on.

I don't think I'd over-react if it had been a loss. It would have been just another "Cubs don't win if they're losing in the ninth" losses that they had last year. I don't know how many games there were like that last year, but wasn't it most of them? I bet they broke a streak of some kind yesterday. So I'm going to over-react a little :-) If only because of the way it was done. Solid bullpen rally in Colorado, and that late inning heroics helped by Hawkins grooving an 0-2 pitch. Yeah, he grooved it, but Fowler still had to hit it. It was a really good way to set a tone. Baseball being baseball, you can see a story saying, "since the dramatic come from behind victory they've been winless", but it is one of the best wins I've seen in a couple years, and hopefully a trend setter. Time will tell of course.

Back to Lester and steals...Arietta gave up 24 steals last year. Didn't seem to hurt him a lot. And speaking of Lester, it appears Gordo is going to use "$155 million pitcher" in every article referencing him.

Gordo is edgy, that's why he writes for a paper that's about to fold. He also was on tv a few years back claiming some Cubs games would be blacked out because no other stations in Chicago that would pick them up. He's also mad that Midway airport does not keep their runway lights on all night just in case Amelia Earhart might land here.

Amelia Mary Earhart, disappeared 7-2-37 over the Pacific Ocean en route to Howland Island. Amelia Earhart was abducted by aliens and taken to the delta quadrant...I saw that on Star Trek Voyager, the episode called "the 37's" Maybe I can point Gordo in the right direction.

Vast improvement Cubs come from behind victories in 9th inning- 2014-0 2015-1

Lineup for tonight's game: Fowler Rizzo Soler Coghhlan Castro Olt Ross Lester Alcantara

Hamilton expected to sit tonight btw...Gordo is gonna be bummed. Figure he already wrote about 1,000 words on the $155M pitcher letting Hamilton steal a base and how the entire game hinged on it.

Mesorasco out as well with a hip injury.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
