Reds @ Cubs: Simon vs Lackey (Game 8)

With some late-inning heroics, Addison Russell gets the season’s first curtain call.

CIN (5-2): RHP Alfredo Simon (0-0, 1.80)
CHC (6-1): RHP John Lackey (1-0, 9.00)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Lackey didn’t pitch well (6 ER, 6 IP) but came away with a win on Thursday, thanks to the Cubs offense, which tattooed the D’Backs pitchers for 14 runs on as many hits. Hamilton is 6-18, and Bruce has a couple of homers off of him.

Simon, the former Oriole and Tiger, is back with the Reds, where’s done his best work. He gave up 1 ER over 5 innings on Friday and ended up with a no-decision against the Pirates. The Cubs are 15-59 (.254) against him. Rizzo is 5-15 with 2 HRs.

Iglesias (1-0, 2.31) vs. Hammel (0-0, 1.50) tomorrow.

Go, Cubs!

Unrelated to today's game, I was wondering if the good Dr. Hecht has thrown in his 2 cents on the potential for Schwarber's recovery from the ACL & LCL tear. Is there any precedent for recovery from this type of knee injury? I thought Zack Cozart of the Reds also tore both ACL and LCL last year, but I couldn't verify via a quick Google search. If that's the case, can we say there's reason to be cautiously optimistic that Schwarber could have a full recovery in 12 months? Cozart sure looked pretty nimble out there until his quad tightened up.

The Cubs are 15-59 (.254) against him.
Slight correction: The 2008-2015 Chicago Cubs are 15-59 (.254) against him, the 2016 Chicago Cubs are 0-0 against him.

As far as Schwarber's recovery time, I know it's a different game but Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and then next season came back fine and rushed for 2,100 yards at a position where much more stress put on the knee than a LF. Given Schwarber also has a LCL but those aren't as bad tearing the MCL or PCL at least

ankle ligaments and broken leg, no knee. But don't get me wrong, Schwarber probably can make a full recovery and play behind there, at least for a few years, but nobody really wants him back there anyway. He's meant to be a DH/1B, but you'll probably live with the defensive liabilty in the OF if you have to...Reds did with Dunn for a helluva long time.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if they traded Schwarber sooner rather than later.

Did a bit more digging around and it sounds like Chad Moeller had a similar injury early in his career and was able to come back and catch. But then, he was probably a heck of a lot better catcher than Schwarber ever was to begin with. I'd like to think though that he can come back to left field if all goes well.

The Miami Marlins have claimed LHSP Eric Jokisch (Cubs 2010 11th round draft pick - Northwestern) off waivers from the Cubs. MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) now at 39 (one slot is open).

Four minor leaguers released by the Cubs during Minor League Camp have found new homes:

2B Angelo Amendolare (Cubs 2015 27th round draft pick - Jacksonville U.) and C-INF Jordan Hankins (Cubs 2013 11th round draft pick - Austin Peay) signed minor league contracts with the Los Angeles Angels, while 1B Jacob Rogers (Cubs 2012 40th round draft pick - Mt. Olive College) and LHRP Matt Brazis (acquired by Cubs from Seattle Mariners for OF Justin Ruggiano in December 2014) went the independent league route, with Rogers signing with Winnipeg (American Association) and Brazis signing with Lincoln (American Association). Rogers joins ex-Cub minor leaguers INF Wes Darvill and C-1B Justin Marra in  Winnipeg.

Also, Cubs 2011 7th round draft pick OF-1B Trevor Gretzky (traded to the Angels in March 2014, and then released by the Angels last month) has signed with Quebec (Can-Am).

Wow. That 49-pitch first inning by Simon was REALLY painful to watch. But it was a good kind of hurt.

You could sort of tell he was pitching around the top of the order but especially now with Bryant and Soler showing life that doesn't help and it's so easy to see the frustration level mount with pitchers. The best part of all this is it's going to be hell on bullpens and that will have an effect on later games. The worst part will be length of game lol.

Games seem to be lasting 3 hours and I'm pretty much too busy to take in a whole game. The key seems to be making sure I can watch in the early innings. TCR should do a spreadsheet on when the Cubs will score 20 runs in a game first. Better hurry though. I reported during the winter that I had a dream the Cubs were 53-17 or some crazy record like that. It's starting to not seem too far fetched. Please Rizzo, stay healthy. Major key there.

Checking out some other offerings in the MLB package: Bucs losing, the Tigres have a nice offense also. I am pretty impressed with the Cards Japanese reliever, Oh. He has some damn good stuff. I also had forgotten we are at their (the Whine-birds) park the beginning of next week. It would be awesome to get in their heads with that series...

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
