Rockies @ Cubs: Bergman vs Arrieta (Game 11)

The Cubs look to get back on track after a listless afternoon effort.
COL (6-4): RHP Christian Bergman (0-1, 12.00)
CHC (8-2): RHP Jake Arrieta (2-0, 1.93)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

Arrieta beat AZ on Sunday, inexplicably giving up 3 ER in 7 innings. He was 9-5 with a 1.97 at Wrigley last year. The Rockies are 11-54 (.208) against him. Arenado and Gonzalez (with a HR) are both 2-6.

Bergman, who has been pitching out of the bullpen as he did for nearly all of last year, will be making his first start of the year in place of the injured Jon Gray, who was placed on the DL at the end of Spring Training with fifty shades of an abdominal injury. Bergman pitched a clean inning against the Padres his last time out, after getting bit by the D’Backs (4 ER, 1 IP) in his season debut. The Cubs are 2-7 off of him, with both hits belonging to Heyward.

Chatwood (1-1, 4.38) vs. Lester (1-0, 2.77) at 1:20pmCST will close out the set tomorrow before the Cubs head to St. Louis and Cincinnati.

Go, Cubs!

per Carrie Muskat, minors injury report:
Injury update: Iowa pitchers Pierce Johnson and Stephen Fife were both placed on the disabled list, and Stephen Perakslis was promoted to Iowa from Tennessee. Fife was injured during his second start of the season against New Orleans on April 13. He was removed mid-at bat after pitching 4 1/3 innings of two-hit ball and has been diagnosed with a left side strain. Johnson was hit by a comebacker in the third inning on April 11. He faced two more batters to finish the inning. He’s sidelined with a forearm bruise on his pitching arm.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
