Cubs @ Cardinals: Lackey vs Leake (Game 13)

The Cubs head into the belly of the beast after dropping a series at home.
CHC (9-3): RHP John Lackey (2-0, 5.68)
STL (7-5): RHP Mike Leake (0-1, 6.97)
First pitch: 7:09pmCT

Lackey pitched well (2 ER, 6.2 IP) in his win against the Reds on Wednesday. He continues to be the beneficiary of the Cubs offense, which has scored 23 runs in the two games he’s started. These Cards are 23-80 (.288) against him. Pena is 6-20.

Leake had a no decision against the Brewers his last time out, giving up 4 ER over 6 innings. The Cubs are 26-112 (.232) against him. Rizzo is 10-30 with 2 HR.

Hammel (1-0, 6.75) vs. Garcia (1-0, 2.40) tomorrow (7:15pmCST).

Go, Cubs!

I can't watch. I mean literally, I have a conflict tonight. But also I'm super anxious. I will step away and check the scores periodically, like I'm watching a scary movie through my fingers.

I expect Hayward would get nothing but boos considering he supposedly turned down more money from the Cards to leave for the Cubs. Lackey may get a warmer response. Anyway, Cubs 9-3 with Bryant, Rizzo, Hayward, Zobrist all batting around .200. Seems like there is plenty of upside potential still left with this team...though the potential long term weakness is being exposed a bit.

The Cubs are currently 15th in MLB in batting average and 3rd in MLB in OBP. Plus, most if not all of the guys you named were hitting fairly well until the season came back to Chicago. It wasn't an easy week to hit at Wrigley. I was at Saturday's game, and it couldn't have been over 58 even though it almost hit 80 in Joliet that day. Long story short, the weakness may be an optical illusion based on small sample size and, even if not, is still very much offset by the OBP.

Really good thing Fowler fell into their laps -- he has been their best offensive player, by far, so far.

I know the pitching has been great, but when you look at some of these bating averages, the record is amazing. Heyward .188 Zobrist .217 Rizzo . 174 Bryant .250 Soler .216

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
