Brewers @ Cubs: Nelson vs Anderson (Game 14)

MIL (8-6): RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-0, 1.38)
CHC (6-7): LHP Brett Anderson (1-0, 0.84)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

This is not the opening homestand you were looking for. The Cubs continue their Wrigley skid, as the losing streak hits four.

Lackey got knocked around early (like he does) but kept the Cubs in the game, as they say. But Schwarber's lead-off physics-defying bunt single was pretty much the highlight of the whole affair.

Anderson, today's starter, beat the Dodgers on Thursday (5 IP, 3 H, 2K 4 BB), and has looked pretty good as a Cub thus far. The Brewers are 10-35 (.286) against him. Braun, who is even more annoying in a home run trot, is 2-5 with a HR.

Nelson had a no-decision in the Brewers' 2-1 win against the Cubs in Milwaukee. He went six innings and gave up one run on four hits. The Cubs are 40-164 (.244) against him. Montero is 4-8, and Zobrist, who had a couple of hits and an RBI last night, is 4-12 with a HR.

Malone vs Hendricks at 1:20pm tomorrow to close it all out, before we head to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Boston.

Go Cubs!

tear it down. get rid of theo (who got us in this 2017 situation) and replace him with some fresh, young blood like darren baker. make d.ross the new manager, k.wood the new pitching coach, and white sammy sosa the new hitting coach. fire up the trade market...let's do this cubbies.

All the Cubs needed was a little billybucks inspiration. My first game of the year -- absolutely beautiful night. Lousy start, accompanied by much gnashing of the billybucks molars, but, man, that rally in the 6th -- the ballpark was shaking. Very nice to see Almora come through. And, although JHey ins't hitting for power, he is getting the ball to the outfield on a regular basis. Very weird to get to the ballpark and not see the starting pitchers warming up, and, as Anderson was giving up rocket after rocket, I kept looking down to the old bullpen to see who was warming up. Not a fan of that change. Eric Thames? What the hell? At the age of 30, after years in the Korean League, he's now the best hitter in baseball? Is Braun sharing his special sauce? Or is he just the next Bryan LaHair? I know it's "only April", but this felt like a big win. Great job by the 'pen.

Meanwhile...Hawks down 0-3, Bulls up 2-0. This is why I no longer bet at the sports book when I go to Vegas. Except for last year's terrible-odds bet on the Cubs to win the WS. It worked...so, I did it again this year, at even worse odds. If it ain't broke...

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
