Cubs @ Reds: Lackey vs Straily (Game 18)

The Cubs version of small ball still manages to score 8 runs.
CHC (13-4): RHP John Lackey (3-0, 3.66)
CIN (8-9): RHP Dan Straily (0-0, 2.70)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Lackey went 7 strong shutout innings (11 Ks, 1 BB) against the Cardinals on Monday to continue his winning streak as a Cub—and to make us all forget that he used to wear that other uniform. The Reds are 36-144 (.250) against him. Votto is 4-14 and Bruce is 5-25, both with 2 HR.

Straily limited the Rockies to 1 run in 5 innings in his last outing but came away with a no-decision. The Cubs are 3-13 against him. Heyward is 1-2, and Fowler is 1-4 with a HR. Let’s hope Straily pitches against the Cubs like he did for the Cubs in 2014 (7 games, 13.2 innings, 18 ER, 11.85 ERA). There's a pretty good chance he doesn't see the third inning.

Hammel (2-0) vs. our buddy Simon (0-1, 12.15) to close out the road trip tomorrow at 12:10pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

My, "Wow. The 2016 Cubs." thought of the day: Anthony Rizzo has a .133 BABIP, but a 12:11 BB:K and a .867 OPS.

The Cubs look like the best team in baseball after 3 weeks. Meanwhile, Contreras, Almora, and Vogelbach are all hitting very well at Iowa. This is the most fun I've ever had as a baseball fan.

And Ross is off to a great start. When he came up with LA I thought he was really going to have a very good career. He did OK, just not as good as I thought he'd do. It would be awesome to see him put together a final year that is crazy good, and if he breaks down a bit at the end of the year, Contreras is probably chomping at the bit. They'll probably have to hold on to Vogelbach for awhile, just as some insurance for Rizzo. Sounds like he's becoming a mediocre fielder, which is a pretty solid improvement.

he's also managing the failed experiment in model organizational youth pitching management s.strasburg...who's former teammate jordan zimmerman also went through the same process...both with results that didn't quite work out for them. we live in the era of managers and front offices keeping an eye on "120" and they're sending record amounts of kids to surgery. it's time to look beyond "120" as a huge red flag even if it's still a good idea not to go too far beyond it.

Speaking of former Cubs -- Starlin now down to .258 BA and .313 OBP. The AL must have figured out to throw him the slider out of the zone.

THAT WAS TURRIBLE... at least STL + PIT are losing. ...make that just PIT.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
