Cubs @ Reds: Hammel vs Simon (Game 19)

Hammel looks to secure the series after an ugly effort.
CHC (13-5): RHP Jason Hammel (2-0, 1.00)
CIN (9-9): RHP Alfredo Simon (0-1, 12.15)
First pitch: 12:10pmCST

Hammel won against the Cards on Tuesday (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BBs). He already beat the Reds (6 IP, 0 ER) in the 8-1 game on the 14th. The Reds are 23-96 (.240) off of him for their careers. Suarez is 4-11.

The Cubs knocked Simon out of the game on April 13 after getting only two outs but giving up 5 ER. He pitched an inning two days later in relief on his throw-day but proceeded to give up 3 ER to St. Louis. Not good, Alfredo! The Cubs are 18-63 (.286) against him. Rizzo is 5-15 with 2 HR.

An off day tomorrow, then the Brewers and Braves are teed up for us at home.

Go, Cubs!

In Arrieta's No Hitters: Rizzo, Russell, Fowler (outside Arrieta) are the only 3 players to make an out in both games

Gotta love baseball: 4 games on consecutive days, against the same team, in the same ballpark: Win 16-0 Win 8-1 Lose 13-5 Win 9-0

Methinks Jorge better get his stuff together pretty quickly. He still looks like he's not really paying attention of defense, and he seems to have lost the plate discipline he had during last year's playoffs. Maddon seems to love Javy's defense and LaStella's bat -- JD was saying how much Maddon likes Javy and Russell on the left side of the infield, particularly with ground ball pitchers on the mound. If Javy ever learns plate discipline, we could see a lot more of him/LaStella at 3rd and Bryant in LF.

Soler is actually 3rd on the Cubs for pitchers per plate appearance, he's swinging at less pitches out of the zone than La Stella and Baez both and his OBP is almost a 100 points above his average. I don't disagree he needs to hit more and his defense hasn't been great so far (though it's getting better) but his plate discipline imo is just fine and because of that his bat will come along. He's getting a bit unlucky with the hits too as his BABIP is only .206.

He's had some of that but he's 8th on the team with hard hit % (6th if you remove Schwarber and Hammel) so there's more than just going on. He seems like someone that really just needs consistent playing time especially with all the injury issues that have plagued him though we'll see if that happens. As you said Madden seems enamored with La Stella and Baez. Soler to me has a much more potential than La Stella and if nothing else needs to have a chance to show more to improve trade value. I wonder if there are a couple issues affecting his batting issues besides BABIP. One is that he obviously isn't a natural fielder like some of the other players and switching to left field with different angles might be causing him to have to work harder at that at the expense of hitting. The other is this seems like a very close team that hangs out constantly after games per comments from Rizzo and others and Soler is the one player that doesn't speak English and I wonder if this causes him to feel much more isolated which combined with less playing time and a switch in positions could lead to more mental stress. I read a quote from him that he's been learning as much English as possible and he's going to surprise his teammates with how much he can talk so it's obviously something that matters to him. Again from quotes from Rizzo and others the rest of the team remains relaxed through struggles partially because of the friendships and bonding they have and I wonder where he fits in.

There's quite a few players on the club who speak Spanish, aren't there? That shouldn't be a deal killer in terms of hanging out. I saw him in a very animated dugout convo with Montero the other day. Montero seemed to be explaining something to him. It was cool. I don't think he's a Maddon favorite but his upside is too high for Maddon to neglect.

There might be and I'm glad if so. I know Vladimir has been mentioned as someone who talks to him a lot. When you have a bunch of people hanging out though it can be very difficult to have a multilingual conversation. I've seen first hand how it can be uncomfortable to be around a group of people talking and having fun and you have no idea what is being said. It can be a lonely position. I have no idea if that's going on here I just feel that when you have a young guy in Soler who is a Cuban defector, who has been injured a bunch and who had his starting position taken away it's probably not an easy position for him to be in and that might be affecting his hitting.

this MIN/WAS game is off the hook. WAS ties in the bottom 15th with 2 outs after o.perez (the pitcher, WAS out of position players) bunts himself on base and draws an errant throw scoring the runner from 2nd. to the 16th... walkoff HR win for WAS in the bottom 16th. game took almost 6 hours.

Some day this year, the Nats will play a team over .500. [Note: he says this as the Cubs face the Brew this week]

Cards can still pitch, and Molina is, like, really good. Pirates have some pitching and a great OF. Could easily be 3 NL Central teams in the playoffs again. Once again -- although moving the Astros forced daily inter-league play despite having different DH rules (remarkably dumb-ass stupid -- I mean, really?) -- thanks for moving he Astros.

WHIP NL League Leaders: 1. Arrieta (.68) 4. Lester (.84) 14. Hammel (1.04) 20. Lackey (1.22)

Two off day baseball questions: 1.) Assuming that Schwarber heals wholly from his knee injury, I'm sensing from the TCR group a general disbelief in his outfield defensive skills (although I thought that the Hammel/Schwarber partnership was a cool idea, I desire "defense first" in my backstops and hope that this experiment in catching is over). I've mulled over the "innate" v. "learned" route reading and, although he isn't a natural, I just have to believe that given time he will be a better outfielder than, say, Matt Holiday. Am I wrong? 2.) At what point to do I/We pull the plug on the Hendricks as Maddox dream? I don't believe that it is now, but I really like him and every time I see his name in the line-up, I think, "Ah, THIS is the game where we he pulls it all together." He hasn't yet, wholly, but I still believe that he might. When is that dream seriously in doubt? And, if not Maddox, who then will his comp. be?

general rule of thumb is when somebody is compared to Greg Maddux, just go ahead and call bullshit. It's isn't true or even close.

Hendricks is a very good 4th/5th starter though, nothing to worry about and he'll have a few good streaks in there this season. And likely be replaced if Cubs make a deadline trade.

As for Schwarber, I'm sure he can butcher the outfield about as well as Adam Dunn did and put up just as much if not more offensive value. To develop any instincts or ability in the OF is going to take reps out there and not gonna do that on the DL. He's destined to be a 1B, when that happens is the only question. I'm hoping for a DH in the NL on the next CBA which expires after this year.

Me too on the DH but I'm not seeing anything saying that that's likely. Manfred very quickly back tracked on his remarks and is now saying there isn't the support for it. In terms of Schwarber if you think his bat can be elite you deal with him in the outfield because I don't see him replacing Rizzo who has a very good contract, is a team leader and is very involved in the communityin addition to his offensive and defensive skills, all things highly prized by seemingly all the Cubs brass. An elite bat has a lot more positive impact on the game than a few poor routes in the outfield will have on the negative end.

In reply to by johann

Manfred backtracking is just a negotiating ploy imo. No reason the AL owners would be against it, so that means swaying 15 NL owners and you don't have to sway them all. It'll happen...if not by this one, then by the next. Another star pitcher getting injured while hitting like Wainwright last season would increase the odds of it happening this time around.

The union said it would need to poll its players, I imagine while a few will hold out, the majority would prefer the DH. Not like they're just gonna ask pitchers in the NL.

given that almora might be showing up to pull duty in CF next year, and the advanced coverage he provides, schwarber may be able to handle LF by crutching on almora's coverage. that said, it all depends on what his body will let him do. at least he's coming out of it nearing his mid-20s than mid-30s.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

pablo sandoval played 3rd and got a couple ABs (strikeout, single!) in the OAK@SF "exhibition"

mlb officially authenticated the ball of the single he hit.  nice.

he's in surprisingly good shape considering his poor body condition in his last playing seasons.  he's not lean, but he looks healthier.  good for him.

AZ Phil, speaking of Jordan Wicks having better command when he tires a bit, I remember reading about Dennis Lamp 40 years ago and his sinker that was better after 3 or 4 innings when he would tire a bit and get more sink with a little less speed on the pitch.  The key for Lamp was getting to the 4th inning.
