Brewers @ Cubs: Nelson vs Hendricks (Game 20)

The Cubs are back home and back at it.
MIL (8-11): RHP Jimmy Nelson (3-1, 3.46)
CHC (14-5): RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-2, 4.00)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hendricks lost in St. Louis on Wednesday (4 ER, 5.1 IP). He was 2-1 with a 1.48 in four starts against Milwaukee last year. The Brewers are 7-45 (.156) against him. Maldonado is 2-8.

Nelson beat the Twins his last time out (4 ER, 6.2 IP). He was 0-1 with a 2.61 in his three starts against the Cubs last year. The Cubs are 22-80 (.275) against him. Soler is 5-15 and Rizzo is 4-13, both with a HR. Baez is 3-6.

Jungmann (0-3, 8.47) vs. our man Arrieta (4-0, 0.87) tomorrow, also a night game.

Go, Cubs!

It's crazy with Rizzo. He has a low AVG and really high fly ball out ratio yet he's tied for first in WAR for all 1st basemen. Part of that is a very good defensive WAR but he's just someone who can take over a game at any time. Bryant, by the way, is killing it defensively at 3rd base so far. He's the 3rd best 3rd basemen in UZR and 9th best overall defenseman in DEF (UZR adjusted for position). He seems to have cleared up some of the issues he had with ground balls. I hope he stays there the majority of the time. Fowler is the best CF in UZR and 8th best overall fielder in DEF which is crazy. I guess he's playing deeper though and Madden said the metrics showed most of Fowlers defensive issues arose from playing too shallow.

I was just out on Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago -- it is miserable out. About 40 degrees with the wind howling out of the north. The kind of night where you turn your back to the wind when waiting to cross the street.

I know - it is cold and windy. A late November early December cold... On another note - I have been less than impressed with Zobrist. I am hoping this sample size ain't nothing and that his skills are not declining at the wrong time.

Oh his #s with RISP are terrible and certainly I'd like to see him hit more all around but just like with Soler (except more) I think he is showing enough plate discipline he'll come around with the bat. It's kind of interesting actually he is 2nd best at not swinging at pitches outside of the zone and best at making contact on pitches inside the zone at 93.8%. That is an insanely high # and contrast that with Baez who only makes contact 73.5% of the time on pitches inside the zone. Age was certainly a concern of mine coming into the season and we'll see what happens but his ability to see pitches and take walks is certainly a big advantage even when he's not hitting.

He's not doing much when he puts the ball in play, but I'd take a .385-ish OBP in front of Rizzo and Bryant even if it continued to come with a .365-ish slugging percentage. With Soler, Montero, Russell, and Baez all offering additional power in the back end of the lineup, all we need from Zobrist is to get on base.

Haha Baez just had one of the best tag avoiding stolen base slides I've seen. And hands first because of course!

The home plate ump's strike zone is pretty inconsistent, per Gameday. Calls one pitch on the low outside corner a ball, then one just as low but farther outside a strike. At least if a ump is consistent, the players can adjust.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
