Brewers @ Cubs - Peralta vs. Lester; Game 21 Thread

The Cubs finally get a bit of a break in the schedule as the depleted Brewers limp into town.

Wily Peralta vs. Jon Lester

#Fowler CFSegura SS

*Rizzo 1BBraun RF

As soon as I make fun of a lineup, I know they'll put up a big day, but that Brewers lineup is not...good. Lucroy is hurt, Gomez is hurt (due back tomorrow), Braun is steroid-less, Lind is taking the day off versus the lefty and Aramis is getting ready to ride off into the sunset. So what I'm basically saying is Jon Lester better get back on track today (shakes fist in air). As for batter vs. pitcher match-ups, Castro and Rizzo have worn out Peralta (both are 11/24 off him, Castro with 2 HR's and Rizzo with 5).

Fun fact I posted in chat on Wednesday: The Cubs have played the 2nd hardest schedule to date (behind the Yankees) and the Cardinals have played the 2nd softest schedule to date (ahead of the Rangers). Hopefully this is a harbinger of more good things to come.

What I think happened with Fowler, on his single in the gap he was thinking of going to 2nd and put on the brakes and Parra's throw was offline as he was going away from 2nd base and had to spin and throw.. So on the next play, he sees it going to Parra again (this time charging the ball) and thinks maybe he'll throw it away again (at least I hope he thought that) because there's no way in hell he could have seen that play in front of him and thought he was going to outrun it. Parra did make a nice play barehanding it and a strong throw.

Manfred in the booth with Len and JD

at the very least he seems like he actually believes what he says, Selig always felt like P.R. speak.

oh dear

Segura on 2nd dancing back there...Lester steps off a bunch of times...all is good...then Ross decides a pick-off attempt on a pitch high and away and Segura just decides to go to third and makes it easily. Time for a new plan :)

Lester ends up K'ing Braun anyway and Davis pops out to end inning.

Fun times on base paths for MIL runners. Took huge league of 2nd base and Ross tried to throw behind him, instead he just stole 3rd.

Castro has not appeased the BABIP God's though

brutal double play there, hit it hard...just an atom ball.

Peralta at nearly 70 pitches already going into the bottom of the fourth. That's the stuff I'm really liking.

Hope Castro saw what Rizzo did there coming off the base stopping the ball from going into the OF.

weird not bunting with Lester, is he terrible at it? Doesn't want him to break a finger? Peralta does throw 95+...

Ross is no sure thing to score on a single so I think you'd want him at 3b.

Good to see Manfred doesn't seem to be in a any rush for DH to NL: “I understand why there’s talk because we had a couple pitcher injuries while they were batting,” Manfred said before Friday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. “Over the long haul, I’m a status quo person on the DH. I think the difference between the two leagues is a source of debate among fans, and I’m a big believer in the idea of when people are talking about baseball it’s a good thing.”

nice throw to get Castro on 3rd on that single, nothing wrong with the call especially with 1 out, RF made the play.

Lester hits for himself in bottom of 7th to leadoff. Comes out to pitch 8th and then is replaced when Brewers go to pinch-hitter.

no bench is that short when you haven't even used anyone yet. lester only threw 90 pitches and was replaced for matchup leverage. gambling with a 1 run lead in the 8th... MIL is playing like they're barely a AAA team early this season, so it's not a big deal even if it's an odd move (hopefully).

Why do I get the feeling that Kris Bryant is some evil genius just studying pitchers for now - only to wreak havoc on them in a few weeks?

he's closing in on a sub-.400 slugging %...not the bryant we expected so far. at least his power is the only part he's not delivered. he's doing as expected or excelling everywhere else. i don't think anyone out there is counting him out on a 20-30HR season yet, though. he sees the ball, he obviously has power...*shrug*

Don't let his height fool you, He's a rookie, barely drinking age. All things considered, and considering how much respect opposing pitchers have given him, I think he's been just fine and yea, I expect him to make adjustments and improve. I actually REALLY like how patient he's been. He didn't come up and start waving at the ball trying to hit home runs, he took plenty of pitches and stayed discipline. Rare for a young guy like Bryant.

He'll need to continue not to chase pitches out of the strike zone, because pitches in the strike zone will get by him at an above-average rate when he's not hitting them over fences. Pitchers should be learning right now that if you want to get Bryant out, you have to do it in the strike zone. Fangraphs' plate discipline stats are fun. They show that basically Bryant has been who everyone said he would be (minus the homeruns), and that pitchers really just are throwing a lot of balls when he's at the plate. (They also paint a really interesting picture of Rizzo, whose O-Swing% is way down so far while his contact rate is up.)

Now this is unexpected. MLBLineups @mlblineups · 5/2 @Cubs lineup vs MIL Soler RF Fowler CF Rizzo 1B Bryant 3B Montero C Castro SS Denorfia LF Arrieta P Russell 2B

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
