Cubs @ Pirates: Arrieta vs Niese (Game 25)

All hail, Jake.
CHC (18-6): RHP Jake Arrieta (5-0, 1.00)
PIT (15-11): LHP Jonathan Niese (3-0, 5.08)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Arrieta, the NL pitcher of the month, won his fifth straight game in as many starts (5 IP, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 4 BBs) on Thursday against the Brewers. It’s nice when he opts to pitch like a mortal to give the other team a shot and make it feel like a real game. The Pirates are 28-115 (.243) against him. Joyce is 7-14 with a HR. McCutchen is 8-23.

Niese, the former Met, gave up 5 ER in 5 innings in Colorado his last time out but came away with a no-decision. The Pirates have won all 5 of his starts. The Cubs are 30-120 (.250) against him. Heyward is 9-28 with 2 HR, Fowler is 5-18 with a HR, and Ross is 6-22 with a HR.

In injury news, Heyward is day-to-day with right wrist soreness, but it doesn’t sound serious. Szczur is having an MRI on his tight right hamstring. He could end up on the DL.

Lester (2-1, 1.83) vs Nicasio (3-2, 3.33) at 11:35amCST tomorrow to end the roadtrip.

Go, Cubs!

Schwarber hurt, Heyward hurt, Szczur hurt. Let's see how many guys have to go down before Soler gets his job back.

Ryan Kalish writeup (by Peter Gammons last November):
~snip~ At that point (September 2014), in a professional career that began in August, 2006 with the Red Sox, who had drafted him in the ninth round out of Red Bank, N.J. and bought him out of his football scholarship to the University of Virginia, had already had seven operations. Two on the hamate bone in his hand, the second to take out what the doctors who performed the original operation had left in. Two on his neck. Two on one shoulder, one on the other. Then, after the 2014 season he signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays. But when he began running and working out, but felt pain in both knees. So he had two more operations, on each knee, one microfracture procedure “like,” Kalish says, “Grady Sizemore.” That ended any chance of playing in 2015. But by the end of October, he was running and throwing and starting to hit and chase fungo fly balls… And Saturday afternoon was on a bus driving across Puerto Rico. “I’m too young, and I have too much fun playing baseball to give up,” he says. ~snip~

There's an interview with Heyward up on ESPN where he says the wrist thing has been lingering and he just brought it up with the team as it didn't go away. So that could very well explain why he hasn't had the same hard contact recently.

roster shuffle official per Sun Times, Gordon Wittenmeyer on twitter...Szczur to DL with minor hamstring strain, Chris Villanueva to 60 day DL, Ryan Kalish to 40 man roster and gets the call-up.

tonight: Fowler, Soler, Bryant, Rizzo, Zobrisjt, Baez, Russell, Federowicz, Arrieta

Seems an odd lineup -- Soler in LF and Bryant in RF? Two guys out of position? I guess Fed has to catch tonight so All Star Gramps can catch Lester tomorrow. Or maybe Joe just wants somebody else to catch a no-hitter. Would love to see KB get the power turned on. C'mon Jorge -- channel your playoff self!

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
