Cubs @ Cardinals: Butler vs Leake (Game 35)

CHC (17-17): RHP Eddie Butler (0-0, —)
STL (19-14): RHP Mike Leake (4-1, 1.79)
First pitch: 7:15pmCST

Now pitching for the Cubs, Theo and Jed’s latest restoration project: Eddie Butler.

The 26y/o Virginian was rescued from the Rockies in February, in exchange for RHP James Farris and some change from the Ricketts’ couch.

In his five starts for Iowa this year, he went 1-0 with a 1.17. In 36 appearances (28 starts) over the last three seasons with Colorado, he was 6-16 with a 6.50 ERA—aka, the Rocky Mountain Way. The Cards are 5-7 against him. Fowler is 1-1 with a HR.

Leake gave up 3 ER in 7 innings to win in Atlanta his last time out. Overall, the Cubs are 47-177 (.266) against the former Red. Bryant is 9-20, and Rizzo is 15-40 with 2 HR.

Inexplicably, the Cubs head into enemy territory in fourth place in the division and 2.5 games behind the Cardinals. So far, the Cubs are 10-8 on the road.

Lester (1-1) vs Martinez (2-3) tomorrow at 3:05, then Arrieta (4-2) vs Wainwright (2-3) on Sunday at 1:15pmCST to end the series.

Go Cubs!

Eddie is obviously the next Jake Arrieta. By which I mean he should grow a giant beard and try not to lose 3 mph off his fastball.

I'd understand if the pitching was a bit off from last year. I'd understand if a couple players were slumping at the plate. I'd understand if our defense was a little less perfect than last year. But to go from first to near last in pitching and defense, and have about 5 of 8 position players slumping...that's a lot to go wrong so quickly. So what is it? General exhaustion from a late end to the season and off season commitments? Lack of drive and motivation? Maddon being too loose in spring training? less fun clubhouse minus Fowler and Ross? just curious what everyone thinks.

They have had a funky (3 Sunday night) and difficult (BOS, NYY, @ COL) schedule -- but, yeah, it's strange. The good news is that they have survived, and nobody in the division has had a hot start. Also, with no Dex and no Ross, Rizzo probably feels the load of being the team leader. He looks very anxious and frustrated at the plate.

KB out with upset tummy, John Jay replacing him in RF (Candelario was at 3B)

through 4, butler is throwing a ton of his 4-seam mid-90s fastball and very few of his 2-seam sinking fastball...very few sliders or changeups. it's been an extremely mid-90s fastball performance so far. also, he's got a very fast pickoff move to 1st.

Annnnd......breathe. Phew, what a finish. HUGE K by Davis to end it after the bizarre play before. Not a great throw, but Rizz needs to catch that. If the Cubs lost that one, that way, things could have gotten very ugly. Eddie Butler -- why don't you hang around a while, young man. BTW - Szczur with a leadoff bomb vs. the White Sox.

Ben Zobrist's BA by month since joining the CHC 260 406 221 212 270 238 216 That's struggling.

bryant out tomorrow, too...could be available to pinch hit...maybe...it's maddon...i wouldn't be shocked to see him starting the game playing CF and pitching a few innings of relief later on.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
