As Long as You Don't Look at the Standings, The Cubs are Doing Great!

The Cubs just took 2 of 3 from the Nationals including winning games started by Strasburg and Gio.  Their starting pitching has put up the third best ERA in the senior circuit without their best pitcher. 'Mo Gregg is locking down games in the 9th, and Anthony Rizzo is the left-handed power hitting droid you've been looking for...what's not to love?

(clicks on Yahoo MLB Standings...quickly clicks off Yahoo MLB standings)

Back to the positive....let's talk the Anthony Rizzo deal...7/$41M with option years.

Once a novelty in the league, these pre-arbitration deals are fast becoming the norm. I'm sure someone's studied it more thoroughly than me, but it seems rare that they don't work out for the organization. Safe to say, he'll be a Cub for a long time though...unless he's not and they trade him away with Castro for all the good players in the league.

The other interesting tidbit I read over the weekend, was this report/presumption that Scott "2.53 ERA" Feldman could be the odd man out of the rotation once Matt Garza returns to showcase himself to a contender every 5 days. According to the Patrick Mooney tweet, Dale Sveum says Samardzija, Jackson and Travis Wood will stay in the rotation and they're not willing to try EXTREME 6-man style. That leaves Carlos Villanueva and Scott Feldman as the logical goats, although both have pitched better (by ERA at least) than Samardzija and Jackson. First, I don't get why they wouldn't try a 6-man until a deal can be made, the Cubs aren't contending for anything and showcasing these pitchers in the starter role isn't the worst thing they can do. But if I had to choose between demotion options, I think Edwin and Villanueva would be the more logical choices. Villanueva seems to be pitching over his head a little more than Feldman right now and I think we all expected he was set for the swing-man role when he was signed and that's probably the role that would interest other teams. Now Edwin signed the big deal, and that usually takes precedence over the quality of the pitching, but since the Cubs are all about flipping short-term assets for long-term assets, then it would make sense to showcase Feldman until a trade could be made, while Edwin dives into his pool of gold for a few weeks (or months) waiting to be put back into the rotation.

26th in win % but 20th in Pythag. Based upon the sight and smell test, I feel like this team is closer to 20th than 26th in terms of on-field talent. That said, these standings suck.

"Matt Garza (lat) could rejoin the Cubs' rotation after Thursday's rehab start with Triple-A Iowa."

light showing for a night game...even the bleachers are looking thin.

Cold tonight dropping to 35 but at about 3 pm tomorrow it will be 82.

sori homer (2r)!

smashed so hard the LF'r didn't even move...out of the ballpark.

...since we've been talking about SBs lately.

sureholds just attempted a SB on a guy that throws 75% fastballs 93-95mph.

now that's the wrong guy vs the wrong pitcher...even if the catcher doesn't have an accurate arm. 93mph fastball + average-at-best runner...caught stealing.

thinking about taking my old Ted Lilly Fan Club jacket to tailor and changing to Travis Wood Fan Club.

swank. i'm stuck with the stupid rockies feed. thanks mlb EI.

Probably not as much fun as having the White Sox feed during a 9-1 beat down like tonight. There's something fun about hearing ol' Hawk bitch and moan -- plus the long stretches of pissed off silence.

b.harper couldn't believe the cubs won until he took a closer look at the scoreboard.

Ouch, whats that dirt before the wall?

The perfect place to take your Garden Weasel for a spin.

"while Edwin dives into his pool of gold for a few weeks (or months) waiting to be put back into the rotation."

Haha, nice.

That's the thing about getting free agent pitchers. They're really so capable of being a bad investment. And through a combination of good coaching and scouting, you can stock your staff up with good pitchers, as we have seen the Cubs, surprisingly, do. I keep expecting the bottom to drop out with this starting staff, and maybe it will, but maybe Bosio is actually a good pitching coach and is getting the most out of these guys. Wouldn't it be awesome to have our own Dave Duncan?

I sat near "Edwin's Entourage" at the game last night. Must've been a group of his friends and family, fucking asshole children they've got in that family. I hate shitty parents.

A little harsh there...

No. Other people in the section who wanted to buy the kids got dogs with the hope that they choke to death, that's harsh. The little fucks screamed nonstop from inning 1 to 5 until one of them, maybe 8 years old said "fuck this, I want to go to the gift shop." Same kid asked people near him if they wanted to buy Edwin Jackson autographed balls for $200. Never once did I hear parental figures assert any sort of control over these little monsters. Thankfully they took the kids to the "fucking gift shop" and didn't come back after the 5th. Only after then could I have a conversation with my sister. Shitty parents suck.

Well described. I'll give you this one. :)

per mlbtr...

Cubs have $4.2M to spend on Internationals

The highest bonus is likely to go to Dominican outfielder Eloy Jimenez, potentially $2.6-2.8MM with the Cubs as the "heavy favorite." The Cubs are also the frontrunners to sign one of the top Venezuelan players, shortstop Gleyber Torres.

"Rockies signed RHP Sean Gallagher to a minor league contract."

"Cubs manager Dale Sveum said a six-man rotation "could happen" when Matt Garza returns from the disabled list."

...

"It's a tough decision because everyone has pitched pretty well and it's going to be one of those things, it's going to be unfortunate for somebody," Sveum said. "Maybe you go to a six-man rotation for a week just because of matchups. You never know. A lot of things come into play."

i.stewart goes 1/3 (double) and a bb.

t.campananananana (Reno) goes 3/5 (all singles) with 1bb and only steals 1 base...what a loser.

soriano breaks up the cubs PR mouthpiece in the booth busy talking about the restoration while the rockies are piling up hits...3 hits in a row, 1 run in...play at the plate breaks up the in-game commercial.

  • The key for Heyward's offense: get early leads. Heard a stat on Mike & Mike on the way to work that his avg/power much better this year when the Cubs have the lead. And true to form he gets the two run dinger with Cubs winning 3-0 ...

  • I'm sorry - I was probably not looking at the correct line, or spot, or...who knows!

I could blame it on the weed, but I stopped smoking many years ago.

Fortunately, I can rely on the rest of you sober and astute folks to bring the correct info forth.

  • Oh yeah! It just felt like one for some reason.

  • Agreed. I was not including Fowler or Heyward.

I'm just not a fan of 2016 Coghlan.....

Dusty Baylor 2 hours 55 min ago view
  • @Dusty Contreras if it's a Lester or Arrieta start. TLS is good PH too. You also forgot about Heyward, assume Fowler is CF.

  • I expect Soler to get optioned as well when activated and Cahill to replace Grimm. It wouldn't surprise me if Coghlan and/or Soler is included in a trade.

Maybe Coghlan is up to see if he can get on track before someone acquires him.

This move could also be to assure that we have as much OF depth as possible to maximize Joe's ability to rest players in September once we've clinched.

  • Maddon basically said as much...Fowler still kind of sore, they're being proactive, etc.

  • La Stella at 2B...Baez at 3B, or vice versa. Zobrist in RF, Bryant in LF No one gets bumped.

Dusty Baylor 3 hours 9 min ago view
  • If Coghlan is leading off, I assume Fowler is getting the day off. Who is supposed to lead off, then? Someone has to get on base for Bryant and Rizzo. Coghlan's OBP is .346 with the Cubs. Jackson's was .304. LaStella can lead off, but then he has to play second or third, and bump Zobrist or Baez.

Unless he gets hot, Coghlan will likely change places with Soler soon.

  • I suspect the Cubs asked Chris Coghlan if he would accept an Optional Assignment to the minors and he refused (Coghlan has one minor league option left), so either you keep LaStella on the 25 and release Coghlan, or option LaStella to AAA for about a month and have both LaStella and Coghlan available in September-October. (As an Article XIX-A player, Coghlan must give his permission before he can be optioned to the minors, while LaStella has not accrued enough MLB Service Time to refuse an optional assignment).

  • Given today's lineup -- maybe they just wanted an extra OF to give Dexter a few days off (i.e. day game after a night game).

billybucks 3 hours 33 min ago view
  • Tommy LaStella has three minor leaue options left so it's no big deal to send him to Iowa, but as of right now he projects to be at 2+124 MLB Service Time by the end of the of the 2016 MLB regular season, which will place him "on the bubble" as far as being eligible for salary arbitration as a "Super Two" post-2016.

But if he spends at least twenty days on optional assignment this season (anything less than twenty days and he will accrue a full season of MLB Service Time), he will not have enough MLB Service Time to have a chance to be a "Super Two."

  • this will be his 4th time leading off for the cubs this season...WITH A .500 OB%! HAIL MADDON! THE PLAN (c)2016! HE HAS RISEN! #YOLO #SWAG! KONY 2012!

  • I don't hate Coghlan as a PHer but he's leading off today which is as bad as Austin Jackson doing so last year. He doesn't even have the speed.

johann 4 hours 41 min ago view
  • TLS has options. He will be up again in Sept, and maybe earlier.

Rob Richardson 4 hours 52 min ago view
  • Very odd -- TLS .308/.419 in July (in 26 AB). Strange move for a team struggling to score runs. Hard to imagine Coghlan doing better than that. Maybe they like Coghlan better as a PH?
