As Long as You Don't Look at the Standings, The Cubs are Doing Great!

The Cubs just took 2 of 3 from the Nationals including winning games started by Strasburg and Gio.  Their starting pitching has put up the third best ERA in the senior circuit without their best pitcher. 'Mo Gregg is locking down games in the 9th, and Anthony Rizzo is the left-handed power hitting droid you've been looking for...what's not to love?

(clicks on Yahoo MLB Standings...quickly clicks off Yahoo MLB standings)

Back to the positive....let's talk the Anthony Rizzo deal...7/$41M with option years.

Once a novelty in the league, these pre-arbitration deals are fast becoming the norm. I'm sure someone's studied it more thoroughly than me, but it seems rare that they don't work out for the organization. Safe to say, he'll be a Cub for a long time though...unless he's not and they trade him away with Castro for all the good players in the league.

The other interesting tidbit I read over the weekend, was this report/presumption that Scott "2.53 ERA" Feldman could be the odd man out of the rotation once Matt Garza returns to showcase himself to a contender every 5 days. According to the Patrick Mooney tweet, Dale Sveum says Samardzija, Jackson and Travis Wood will stay in the rotation and they're not willing to try EXTREME 6-man style. That leaves Carlos Villanueva and Scott Feldman as the logical goats, although both have pitched better (by ERA at least) than Samardzija and Jackson. First, I don't get why they wouldn't try a 6-man until a deal can be made, the Cubs aren't contending for anything and showcasing these pitchers in the starter role isn't the worst thing they can do. But if I had to choose between demotion options, I think Edwin and Villanueva would be the more logical choices. Villanueva seems to be pitching over his head a little more than Feldman right now and I think we all expected he was set for the swing-man role when he was signed and that's probably the role that would interest other teams. Now Edwin signed the big deal, and that usually takes precedence over the quality of the pitching, but since the Cubs are all about flipping short-term assets for long-term assets, then it would make sense to showcase Feldman until a trade could be made, while Edwin dives into his pool of gold for a few weeks (or months) waiting to be put back into the rotation.

26th in win % but 20th in Pythag. Based upon the sight and smell test, I feel like this team is closer to 20th than 26th in terms of on-field talent. That said, these standings suck.

"Matt Garza (lat) could rejoin the Cubs' rotation after Thursday's rehab start with Triple-A Iowa."

The Jesus (CF), The Error (SS), $41M aka Tony Four $acks (1B), Sorryano (LF), Trade Bait (RF), Hostage (3B), Beefy (C), Theriot-Plus (2B), Not-Kerry Wood (P)

vs.

EY Junior, Rutledge, Cargo, Tulo, Rosario, Helton-o, Arenado, Blackmon-o, Nicasio

sori homer (2r)! smashed so hard the LF'r didn't even move...out of the ballpark.

...since we've been talking about SBs lately. sureholds just attempted a SB on a guy that throws 75% fastballs 93-95mph. now that's the wrong guy vs the wrong pitcher...even if the catcher doesn't have an accurate arm. 93mph fastball + average-at-best runner...caught stealing.

thinking about taking my old Ted Lilly Fan Club jacket to tailor and changing to Travis Wood Fan Club.

"while Edwin dives into his pool of gold for a few weeks (or months) waiting to be put back into the rotation." Haha, nice. That's the thing about getting free agent pitchers. They're really so capable of being a bad investment. And through a combination of good coaching and scouting, you can stock your staff up with good pitchers, as we have seen the Cubs, surprisingly, do. I keep expecting the bottom to drop out with this starting staff, and maybe it will, but maybe Bosio is actually a good pitching coach and is getting the most out of these guys. Wouldn't it be awesome to have our own Dave Duncan?

No. Other people in the section who wanted to buy the kids got dogs with the hope that they choke to death, that's harsh. The little fucks screamed nonstop from inning 1 to 5 until one of them, maybe 8 years old said "fuck this, I want to go to the gift shop." Same kid asked people near him if they wanted to buy Edwin Jackson autographed balls for $200. Never once did I hear parental figures assert any sort of control over these little monsters. Thankfully they took the kids to the "fucking gift shop" and didn't come back after the 5th. Only after then could I have a conversation with my sister. Shitty parents suck.

per mlbtr... Cubs have $4.2M to spend on Internationals
The highest bonus is likely to go to Dominican outfielder Eloy Jimenez, potentially $2.6-2.8MM with the Cubs as the "heavy favorite." The Cubs are also the frontrunners to sign one of the top Venezuelan players, shortstop Gleyber Torres.

"Cubs manager Dale Sveum said a six-man rotation "could happen" when Matt Garza returns from the disabled list." ... "It's a tough decision because everyone has pitched pretty well and it's going to be one of those things, it's going to be unfortunate for somebody," Sveum said. "Maybe you go to a six-man rotation for a week just because of matchups. You never know. A lot of things come into play."

i.stewart goes 1/3 (double) and a bb. t.campananananana (Reno) goes 3/5 (all singles) with 1bb and only steals 1 base...what a loser.

soriano breaks up the cubs PR mouthpiece in the booth busy talking about the restoration while the rockies are piling up hits...3 hits in a row, 1 run in...play at the plate breaks up the in-game commercial.

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.
