Pirates @ Cubs: Locke vs Arrieta (Game 35)

The Cubs are back to their winnings ways.
PIT (18-16): LHP Jeff Locke (1-2, 4.69)
CHC (26-8): RHP Jake Arrieta (6.0, 1.13)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

Arrieta, after exposing himself to red Kryptonian sunlight in a crystal chamber, gave up 2 ER in 5 innings and came away with a no-decision in the last game of the four-game sweep of the Nationals on Sunday. He won in Pittsburgh (7 IP, 0 ER) earlier this month. The Pirates are 30-136 (.221) against him. Joyce is 7-27 with a HR, and McCutchen is 8-25.

Locke had a no-decision against the Cardinals his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB). The Cubs are 28-97 (.289) against him. Heyward is 7-19, and Rizzo is 7-20 with 3 HRs.

Cole (3-3, 3.78) vs Lester (4-1, 1.96) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to close out the homestand.

Go, Cubs!

Illuminating ABs for Soler & Russell in the 4th. Both were down 0-2, both had seen change-ups in the first 2 pitches. Both get thrown a change-up on 0-2: Soler tries to yank it out to left and K's swinging; Russell stays back a drills a line drive to RF (unfortunately, right at the RF and caught). Russell is learning, Soler doesn't seem to be.

2 hits so far for heyward today, 9 on the month...only 1 xbase hit (double) 6 walks to compliment it. the lack of power is getting concerning. hope he turns a corner with it. sure, he's only a 30-double + 10-15 homer guy anyway, but he's not even looking like that guy for many weeks. at this point even getting a few deep popouts or line drive outs would be at least some kind of positive indication of his bat turning.

given the years and price, that 10-15HR and 30 doubles expectation is a minimum floor i'd like to see satisfied at 23m/8y. he's 144PA into the season with 5 doubles to show for his total xbase hits. there's still time. even if he "only" starts showing it later on in the season and doesn't quite get to his expected power numbers, it's at least promising going forward. this is a long-ass contract and he's most likely not leaving it unless he's outperforming expectations. whether it's his swing, his timing, his wrists/elbow/whatever...something needs to turn a bit aside from some bloops and stuff on the ground for singles. even his "pitcher mistake" hitting isn't being hit with authority lately...few games ago he turned a meatball high-70s changeup down the middle into a groundball single because he got on top of it.

Did anyone see the Kang HBP? Any thoughts on whether it might have been intentional? Asking because I was browsing a Pirates site, and they are positive it was. I don't know WHY he'd intentionally hit him, but their thinking was Arrieta doesn't hit people by accident, and it was probably a hit called by Maddon to get into the Pirates' heads. Legitimate interpretation? Or the flailing conspiracy theories of a frustrated fan base?

the whole PIT team is showing a ton of emotion, especially cervelli (C). it's probably playing into the fan angst. there didn't seem to be much of a reason for arrieta to hit kang only to face .300+ hitting j.harrison with a man already on 3rd. sure, it sets up the DP, which is what happened, but it's not like harrison is a great bet to hit into one or he's a weak hitter. PIT has been playing angsty all game. they lost their pitching coach to an ejection, harrison's been pissed with the strike zone all night, and cervelli's been bi-polar as hell with overjoy early and yelling anger later

And, once again, this team makes you greedy. Hoping for 2-out-of-3, now looking for a sweep. As the man said: "Greed is good."

"Doyers" caught my attention. Is that a thing these days? The reason I ask, is many many years ago, Jack Brickhouse was interviewing Adolfo Phillips--my first Cub hero, alas--and Phillips, who did not speak English very well, spoke about the "Lo' Hanyeles Doyers." Many years later, I learned in Spanish classes about regional Spanish accents and how different they are. So is the "Doyers" thing picking up on some of that? If not, no importa.

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.
