Pirates @ Cubs: Cole vs Lester (Game 36)

To close out the homestand.
PIT (18-17): RHP Gerrit Cole (3-3, 3.78)
CHC (27-8): LHP Jon Lester (4-1, 1.96)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

Lester won against the Padres (6 IP, 3 ER, 4 K, 1BB) on Tuesday. He beat the Pirates in his outing before that (5.2 IP, 0 ER). The Pirates are 37-157 (.252) against him. Joyce is 4-11 with 2 HR.

Cole won in St. Louis (6 IP, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) his last time out. He lost to the Cubs on May 2 in Pittsburgh, giving up 5 ER in 4.2 innings. The Cubs are 35-133 (.263) against him. Rizzo is 8-20, and Bryant is 3-10.

An off day tomorrow, then it’s a 3-series tour, starting at Wrigley North.

Go, Cubs!

Comments

Fowler, Heyward, Bryant (LF), Rizzo, Zobrist, Russell, Baez (3B), Ross, Lester Russell moving up a spot in the order - well deserved

The last time Rondon gave up a run in a Sunday afternoon game in a non-save situation, the Cubs responded with an 8 game win streak. So there's that ...

Cubs could win every series the rest of the year....and have their winning percentage go down from the current .750. Crazy, man.

You are going to see a lot more fights over this stupid slide rule. Before it was just part of the game, now its officially designated as a violation and intentional act or whatever and fielders who get taken out will now take it personally and start fights like Odor. Before rule, Odor doesn't say crap and Baseball world doesn't even notice. Now it starts a butt hurt fight. I guess starting fights is better than sliding now. Great improvement on the rule. Idiots.

In reply to by MikeC

To further add this ruling will also create more injuries as fielders will not be taught to get out of the way and try and take the hit in order to get the ump to rule a double play on a hard slide. Odor made no attempt to get out of the way or brace himself, he even attempted to throw low into Batistas face. He wanted a fight and knew the hard slide was coming. He 100% knew it was coming in a close game.

In reply to by MikeC

I'm not sure how I feel about the slide rule but Bautistas slide was pretty dangerous and was intentionally meant to send a message in retaliation for getting hit with a pitch. He admitted as much after the game. That sort of thing has no place in the game. Punching someone though deserves a long suspension.

In reply to by johann

His slide was dangerous? Come on now....if you want dangerous he can slide spikes up if he really wanted to do some damage. And since this ruling everyone thinks a slide in any degree to take out a person turning a DP is an act of intentionally hurting someone. Again another load of BS. Odor wanted contact and he is a damn fool if he expected less. Now we got fielders standing their ground expecting to not get hit and when they do they get pissed now. He knew a hard slide was coming and then wanted to fight after it like some kind of child.

[ ]

In reply to by MikeC

The fact that he could have made it more dangerous doesn't mean that it wasn't dangerous. It was malicious contact and Bautista even admitted that he intended to send a message. My feeling on fielders standing their ground is it has more to do with the replay rule than it does the slide rule. Amazingly, I think Bautista owes Beltre a big thank you for holding him back for the entire brawl. Because of that, Bautista probably won't have any suspension time.

[ ]

In reply to by Ryno

Yes the fact he said he was trying to send a message shows he wasn't just trying to break up the DP. He went in high and late and was obviously trying to do something which doesn't excuse the punch or the original plunking of him. Also in relation to fielders getting out of the way the primary rule change that concerns me is the removal of the neighborhood play. As you say with replay fielders are having to make sure they stay on the bag long enough to get caught by replay before they can avoid the slide. I think that could lead to some issues.

In reply to by Ryno

See that is what the rule turns sliding into 2nd base now into. Anytime someone does it to hard it is malicious. They have been doing this crap for over 100 years, its not malicious its how you play baseball, and you don't change rules after 1 guy gets hurt. Now we got pussy baseball players who can't take a hard slide and want to throw punches for it now. Look around the baseball world....not many (if any) are standing up to defend Odor and many have no problem with the Batista slide. That is pretty much all you need to know about who was at fault in the situation.

matt bush gets his 1st MLB win. 2ip 0h 0bb 1k. 3ip 0h 0bb 2k on the season (2 appearances).

Ryan Kalish has been sent outright to AAA Iowa.

Outright Assignment Waivers secured beginning on the 31st day of the MLB regular season through August 31st are "good" (in effect) for the entire waiver period in which they were secured, so the Cubs can send Kalish back & forth to Iowa by Outright Assignment as many times as needed through July 31st (the end of the present waiver period) without having to secure waivers each time.

However, Kalish is an Article XX-D player because he has been outrighted previously in his career (Article XX-B status also applies to players who have accrued at least three but less than five years of MLB Service Time), and so he has the right to elect free-agency each time he is outrighted (in which case his contract is terminated and he receives no termination pay), or he can accept the Outright Assignment and defer free-agency until the conclusion of the MLB regular season. (Most Article XX-D players elect to accept the Outright Assignment if is made during the MLB regular season, or during the off season or Spring Training if the player has signed a contract for the forthcoming season). But at least the Cubs won't have to worry about Kalish getting claimed off waivers by another club if he were to be brought back onto the Cubs 25-man roster and then sent back to the minors again prior to 7/31.

The club must advise an Article XX-D player in writing when it has decided to outright the player to the minors. (The club can notify the player up to eight days in advance of the assignment during the off-season or if the player is out of minor league options, and up to four days in advance if the assignment is contemplated during Spring Training or during the MLB regular season). Once notified, the player must make his decision whether to accept or decline the assignment within eight days if he is outrighted during the off-season, or within three days if he is outrighted during Spring Training or during the MLB regular season.

If the Article XX-D player accepts the Outright Assignment and defers free-agency, he can file anytime beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season through October 15th - UNLESS - he is added back to an MLB 40-man roster prior to filing.

And Szczur comes off the DL on Wednesday. Does that mean Federowicz gets sent down or does the anti-Soler crowd get its way and he goes to Iowa instead? After seeing his last at bats and outfield play I'm getting swayed by the argument he just needs to get some more reps in Iowa, especially since Szczur right now is simply a much better all around player. And Maddon seems to like having thee catchers.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

O&B: The Cubs believe they will lose Federowicz if he is placed on waivers, and they don't want to lose him because he knows the Cubs pitchers and they like throwing to him. And it's probably inevitable that two older catchers like Ross and Montero will have DL stints during the course of the season, so having Federowicz available as the #3 catcher is a nice fall-back option (especially since Willson Contreras is not quite ready yet). Also, Maddon does seem to like the flexibility of having three catchers on the 25-man roster so he can PH or PR for Ross or PR for Montero without running out of catchers.

Of course having Kyle Schwarber be the #3 catcher was the original plan and Federowicz is certainly no Schwarber, so having Ross, Montero, and Federowicz on the 25-man roster weakens PH capabilities (especialy with an eight-man bullpen). Therefore, it might be necessary to drop a reliever (most-likely Clayton Richard) and replace him with a position player who can PH. That could be Matt Szczur when he comes off the DL, or it could be Shane Victorino replacing the 8th reliever if Szczur replaces Jorge Soler.

The thing about Richard is that his greatest value to the Cubs would be as a starting pitcher at AAA Iowa, where he can be available as the first-call AAA SP in case of a doubleheader or in case one of the five starters goes down with an injury. Because as things stand right now, the Iowa Cubs really don't have any starting pitchers that would be acceptable as an injury replacement on a contending MLB team.

Richard has three minor league options left, but he must give his consent before he can be optioned because he is an Article XIX-A player (he has accrued at least five years on MLB Service Time). He has a one-year guaranteed contract with a $2M base salary and another $1M in performance bonuses (up to $500K tied to appearances if he works mainly as a reliever, and up to $500K tied to games started if he is used mainly as a starting pitcher), and the Cubs might be able to convince him to accept an Optional Assignment to AAA - IF - they guarantee some or all of the $500K performance bonuses tied to games started (which he will never reach if he remains the 8th guy in the Cubs pen).

Again, Richard doesn't have to accept an Optional Assignment, but because of the perfomance bonuses the Cubs could make it financially attractive for him to go to Iowa and get stretched-out as a starter.

cant imagine that being realistic for the angels unless bryant is involved for a starting point...or rizzo, but i dont think the cubs are crazy enough to let rizzo's sweet contract go. schwarber is neat, too, but it would probably take a stack of talent with him if he's the "star" of the trade offer.

In reply to by jacos

It's not the Cubs even in the unlikely event it does happen. Dodgers and Red Sox can both do the deal without touching their major league roster. I think one of those teams will be willing to bid the most because it has no loss in the present. The Cubs are going to hesitate giving up 3 or 4 of their young valuable hitters plus more for a single guy, no matter how good. Red Sox are the favorite, Dodgers the stalking horse, Cubs the also-ran, Astros and Rangers get cock-blocked by being in the same division.

The 2016 Chicago Cubs- the team whose fan base says "no thanks" to rumors of a Mike Trout trade. Just let that sink in. The Angels would rightfully demand a big haul for Trout and I agree, it would be too much for the Cubs. It was a painful process to get the farm system healthy and stocked, I would hate to see it wiped out, even for the best player in baseball. On the other hand, how cool is that lineup: Fowler, Zobrist, Rizzo, Trout, Bryant, Heyward, Russell, Montero, Arrieta That would be eff'ing absurd.

In reply to by jacos

it seems the angels are favored to sign tim lincecum...so maybe they're not in the mood to deal trout anyway. i'm not taking the trout trade talk very seriously, but there's something else to add to the information/rumor mix. still, even if lincecum works out, they need a couple more arms to fix the injury (many) + disappointment (m.shoemaker) disaster that is their pitching staff. they've already had to pin hopes on j.chacin (via trade from ATL a few days ago) just to plug gaps in their rotation. the fact they even let j.weaver still pitch at all, much less in the rotation, is a testament to how bad things are for them.

just waiting to hear patrick wisdom and masterboney are spotted at the airport going in opposite directions...

aj puk going for the marlins (lefty)...gotta imagine we'll see wisdom in the lineup.

someone has to make room for taillon, too.

  • crunch (view)

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).
