Cubs @ Brewers: Hammel vs Guerra (Game 39)

Let’s do it in 9 today.
CHC (28-10): RHP Jason Hammel (5-0, 1.77)
MIL (17-23): RHP Junior Guerra (2-0, 4.00)
First pitch: 12:40pmCT

Hammel beat the Pirates on Thursday (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB). He was 2-0 with a 2.13 in his two starts at Miller Park last year. The Brewers are 22-95 (.232) against him. Braun, if he feels like playing, is 8-23 with 2 HR, and Gennett is 5-16.

Guerra won against the Padres his last time out (6 IP, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) in his third outing of the season. He was acquired off waivers from the White Sox at the end of last year. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Arrieta (7-0, 1.29) versus Peavy (1-4, 7.43) in San Francisco tomorrow at 9:15pmCST, so take a disco nap.

Go, Cubs!

Comments

Sure, he's swinging the bat well, but Almora still hasn't drawn a walk since April 23rd--almost a month. The major leagues exist to expose a player's weaknesses.

Hayward Needs the Drop Jason's stats indicate his April & May are typically poor. His most ABs are from the 2 @ over 100PAs. Batting 6th, he has a "mere" 321 ABs, but the highest OPS at .900+. He is killing the team right now with LOB, so one would think that Maddon might want to change this and swap out Zobrist? I mean, wtf, Joe? Perhaps his wrist really is bothering him and we don't know these deets. Even more reason, though. Just bunt, Joe.

Cubs have the best record in baseball by a lot...nobody is currently killing this team.

They could play .500 ball the rest of the way and win 90 games.

The only thing I personally worry about (to making the playoffs) is a signficant injury to Arrieta or Lester. Yeah, they could trade for someone, but there aren't too many names out there that are gonna be available. Rich Hill I guess...

Once they make the playoffs, it's roll the dice time anyway especially in that numbnuts 5-game series.

After Ross's defensive masterpiece last night he is now 1st in defensive WAR in the NL and 3rd in total WAR. I'm still on my "anyone but Molina" kick for the All Star game but my god Ross isn't looking like a guy about to retire and could realistically get AS votes without it simply being a "vote for the guy about to retire" thing.

He has been terrific and seems to be a real leader on the team and with the media. But, at 39, well, let's see how he feels in August. I do hope they retain him in a coaching capacity next year -- he could be a help for Contreras, and could also help with Lester's "transition" to a new catcher.

When did the Cubs start wearing their circle C-ubs logo on their road pants?

LOL I think losing a series to the Brewers at this point is a bit like Hillary Clinton losing Rhode Island to Bernie Sanders. I mean yeah, Bernie might have won that, but... c'mon... aren't we just prolonging the inevitable?

Well, that was shocking -- Soler and Heyward K with the game on the bases. Bummer -- needed a better game out of Hammel against an exhausted and Braun-less lineup. Not today. Get the hell out of Milwaukee!!! Very lucky to be leaving with one win.

.269 Soler .293 Baez .325 Heyward Current OBP. This is tough when they are all in the lineup at the same time to score right now.

28-11. They're going to lose at least 60 games. Some of you won't make it if you don't realize that.

This team is terrible. Fire Theo. Dismantle the roster and do a full rebuild--the right way. Where'd I leave my ledge?

pretty sure people realize these things. i dont know anyone who is expecting this team to not make the playoffs and most people think they're going to finish 1st. it doesn't mean you can't say anything negative or want other things to happen. there's points to be discussed even if maddon isn't gonna read TCR and act on them. we're all just talking with ourselves over here. my main wish, considering what he's done in the 2 seasons before this as well as what he's doing this year, zobrist vs lefties in the 2 slot is a very strong case. there's also a very strong case for him being there full-time based on what he's doing, but whatever. some other people have pen concerns...roster concerns about who's on the bench...where soler should/shouldn't be...etc

+1 Indeed - the record notwithstanding does not mean there is no room for improvement. These are the expectations now. Sorry, but they are there. So no I don't think they are going to win 110 games, but like any job, address the things that can use improvement and problem solve until they are improved. When the "best team in baseball" plays one of the worst and they are outplayed in three games straight - well that can stand some attention.

There's nothing wrong with having expectations, and there's nothing wrong with disliking the team losing and/or "underperforming." But I look at the record now and what this team is capable of and am really happy. I'm not too concerned that they lost two of three to the Brewers or a doubleheader to the Padres in May. It's baseball. It happens. Different strokes. And swing planes.

"They're going to lose at least 60 games". So, you're saying 103 wins is absolutely impossible? Hmmm. Maybe not.

Well, 1 for 24 with RISP in the last 3 games. That is certainly pre-Maddon level. More Quade-like. I'm sure they will improve on that. Just too much talent there.

7 runs in 31 innings against a supposedly weak pitching staff. But, Brewers pitched very well and very consistently in the series -- it will be interesting to see if other teams were paying attention. Scouting report: - Breaking ball strikes early in the count. Cub hitters sit on first-pitch FB and didn't swing at early-count breaking balls. They were consistently behind in the count and off-balance the whole series. They are used to being in a "hitter's count". - Make them hit their way on -- minimize BBs. While many Cubs have good OBP, many also have a low BA. Given his utter lack of power (so far, anyway), it is a crime to walk Heyward in front of Bryant and Rizzo. - Don't ever throw Soler a FB with 2 strikes. He hasn't figured out that the 3rd strike will never be a FB in the zone.

Just odd to have a team where 1-9 was hitting so hot, and then collectively all shut down at the same time to 4 different pitchers in a row, and really 5 of the last 7 games. Almost seems like fatigue may have hit or something. Our starting pitching hasn't faltered one bit during this stretch...so good things remain ahead.

angels finalize t.lincecum with MLB deal 1/2.5m (closer to 2m because it's prorated into the season) with 1.7m in incentives.

FWIW - Pirates (and Cards) not having so many problems with San Diego, Brewers or Braves like the Cubs have so far.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
