Brewers @ Cubs: Espino vs Butler (Game 41)

MIL (24-18): RHP Paolo Espino (0-0, ---)
CHC (21-19): RHP Eddie Butler (1-0, 0.00)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

On a night when the Cubs desperately needed someone to go 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 3 B, Butler went 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 3 B and won in his Cub debut against the Cardinals on Friday in St. Louis. His plan is to stay in the rotation, and if he can pitch like that, then his plan is a good one.

The Brewers haven't seen much of him. Overall, they are 1-5 (.200) against him. Villar has the hit. Santana has a walk.

Espino makes his MLB debut (after 11 years in the minors) in place of the ineffective Peralta, who was supposed to go today but finds himself watching from the bullpen, instead. For AAA Colorado Springs, he was 4-0 with a 2.54 in seven games.

We start the series 2 games behind the first-place Brewers in the division, which has temporary written all over it.

In injury news, Heyward (finger) headed to Iowa for a rehab assignment and might return during the series. Eric Thames will be back in the line-up after being on the shelf with strep throat. (That's what he gets for "hanging out" with Bernie Brewer.)

Anderson (2-0) and Arrieta (4-3) go tomorrow, then it's Lackey (4-3) and Nelson (2-2) to close out the series. All games are at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

He had no feel for the fastball today, losing 4-seamers up and sinkers on the arm side and down in the dirt. But the breaking ball was still there and he did limit the damage. It was a bad day to not be able to throw strikes. Cubs hammered a few balls that the wind kept short of even the warning track. I'm still hopeful about Butler. This seemed like a bad command day, maybe in part due to the cold. As long as its not his norm, that stuff should still carry him.

"hopeful about Butler" Majors and minors, he's given up 217 hits in 168 innings. When not doing that, he's giving out free passes. I know they give automatic tryouts to former first-rounders, but that doesn't make me hopeful. I'm actually pretty discouraged about this group of pitchers. Cub hurlers get shelled at Iowa every day, too. When McLeod was being interviewed by Minnesota last winter--that's when I was hopeful.

i wonder what m.montgomery's era/whip would be if he was only allowed to pitch 1 inning. he seems to fall apart after 1ip this season for some reason.

p.johnson mlb debut. "it's rainy and 46 degrees. welcome to the bigs. go get em kid." - kerry wood (calling the game with len today)

Can anyone elaborate on Scwarbs double error in the same inning? I've not watched today.

Pop-up to SS that Baez misread and Kyle came over from LF ball went off his glove as he was sliding, he then tried to underhand toss it to Zobrist to get a force at 2nd ball went into RF. The error for the drop is really dumb cause I dont even think a Heyward or Kiermeier level OF rountinely makes a run atleast 20 yards straight into the IF sliding type catch.

Mixed thoughts about the missed catch error. Both he and Heyward completely misread the ball. Had Schwarber followed the ball, it would have been an easy catch and I think the scorer takes that into account. If you start from when he picked up the ball and knew Heyward wasn't going to get it, then that wasn't really an error. Meanwhile...why the heck were they playing the game then? The infield looked under water and dangerous.

pierce came out after the long rain delay to pitch because maddon rides his new callup relief crew like a demolition derby car this season. woo. 1ip 2h 1bb 2k, 2r/0er

Madden said pregame that he wants to stay at 13 pitchers, so I doubt its Pierce. I think it ends it up being Almora. If Happ stays he is a regular OF with Schwarber and Heyward, with Zobrist spelling one of the two lefties if a southpaw pitching, giving Almora too few chances to start for a player of his caliber at this point in his development.

As much as I'd like to have Almora stick for his superior glove and platoon advantage against lefties, I agree he most likely goes down to Iowa vs LaStella. I guess some fashion of Heyward, Jay and Zobrist/Bryant will be the best gloves in the outfield late in games. Would prefer Jay, Almora and Heyward but so be it.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.
