Martarano & Amaya HR Blasts Lead Cubs to Victory in Scottsdale

Joe Martarano clubbed a solo HR and drove-in another run with a sacrifice fly, Miguel Amaya belted a solo HR and walked, Roberto Caro reached base three times (BB, 1B, and HBP). stole two bases, and scored two runs, Rafael Narea singled twice, doubled, and scored a run, and Erling Moreno and Enrique de los Rios combined to toss five innings of shutout ball with eight strikeouts, leading the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Giants "black" squad in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Field #2 (AKA "Jim Davenport Field") at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

This was Erling Moreno's first game action since appearing in one game (three innings) for South Bend on April 10th. It now appears that Moreno is being primed to be a starting pitcher at Eugene (joining Albertos, Camargo, Assad, and de los Rios), rather than making a return trip to South Bend.

The Cubs are now 17-16-6 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, with three weeks left.

It wasn't a Cactus League EXST game, but the Cubs did play a five-inning Camp Day intrasquad game at the Riverview Baseball Complex yesterday (Friday) morning. The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the 5th with the AZL Cubs ahead 3-2.

Rafael Mejia ripped an RBI double and an RBI single for Eugene, and Miguel Amaya singled twice, drove-in a run, and scored another for the AZL Cubs.

Veteran MLB RHRP Fernando Rodriguez (signed by the Cubs as a minor league FA during the off-season) saw his first game action (19 pitches) since undergoing surgery for a torn lat last September, so he will likely get rehab work in Cactus League EXST games beginning next week.

Retired University of North Carolina head baseball coach and now Cubs minor league baserunning guru Mike Roberts (father of retired MLB 2B Brian Roberts) provided the young Cubs with baserunning instruction prior to the intrasquad game, and then six players were thrown out on the bases (three CS and three PO) between the two squads. It might not seem like a big deal, but running the bases aggressively but without running into outs (and generally making good decisions on the bases) is one of the toughest lessons for a young player to learn. And there is no better (or harder-working) baserunning coach around than Mike Roberts.

RHP Bailey Clark (Cubs 2016 5tth round draft pick) threw "live" BP (one inning - 25 pitches) on Field #6 prior to the intrasquad game. Clark did not attend post-2016 AZ instructs amd he was a late arrival at Minor League Camp this season because he was continuing his undergraduate work at Duke during the 2016-17 off-season.

Here is the abridged box score from Saturday's game (Cubs players only), followed by the box score from Friday's intrasquad game:

Hi Arizona Phil, Thanks for the report! I know Erling Moreno was on the South Bend DL - do you know what his injury was? It's disappointing he'll be repeating Eugene after just one start at South Bend.

In reply to by Raisin101

RAISIN: I asked around last week about Moreno and all I know is that he was shut-down for a month and then he started throwing bullpens. I didn't see him in the morning Rehab Throwing Program Group, so I don't know what exactly was wrong with him.

I don't believe that Moreno will necessarily remain at Eugene for the entire season. There will probably be injuries (as happened with Cease) or promotions in the near future that could open up a slot for him at South Bend, but for right now it appears that he will likely be in the Eugene starting rotation when the NWL begins play next month.

"Braves acquired 1B/OF Matt Adams and cash consideration from the Cardinals in exchange for 1B/3B Juan Yepez." seems like a decent deal for ATL, plus it gets (not)fat adams out of the NL central.

Phil, thanks again for your diligent reporting! Do you happen to have any velocity readings on de los Rios?

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

  • Eric S (view)

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
