Cubs @ Giants: Hendricks vs Bumgarner (Game 42)

I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
The pitching matchup, the national spotlight, Rizzo’s slump—there’s not much reason to feel optimistic about this game, which is probably why we’re going to win it.

CHC (29-12): RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-3, 3.51)
SF (26-19): LHP Madison Bumgarner (5-2, 2.45)
First pitch: 8:05pmCST

Hendricks got beat up by the Brewers (5.1 IP, 4 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) to open the roadtrip on Tuesday. He’s 1-2 with a 5.19 on the road so far this year. In his two starts against the Giants last year, he went 1-1 with a 5.56. The Giants are 11-36 (.306) against him. Belt is 3-5 with a HR.

Bumgarner dominated the Padres his last time out (9 IP, 1 ER, 11 K, 0 BB). He’s 3-0 with a 1.24 so far this month—so maybe he’s due? He beat the Cubs last August in San Francisco, giving up 1 ER over 6 innings. The Cubs are 30-126 (.238) against him. Zobrist is 5-6, and the indispensable Federowicz is 2-3 with a HR.

Lackey (4-2, 3.31) versus Wainwright (4-3, 5.92) in St. Louis tomorrow at 7:15pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Comments

As I mentioned earlier, Hendrix did beat Grienke early in the year, and Joe Ross at Wrigley. But, he has to be perfect for them to have a chance. And, being a #5 starter, easier said than done by far.

there's a small part of me that never wants the TCR twitter feed to update so "creepy/funny bear mask dude in a kayak" can stick around forever...

Isn't every call based on the judgement of the umpire? Ah, well. Bryant rips a line drive right at the SS, then Span pulls one out of his ass to prevent a lead-off triple. When you're going good, Kalish's blooper drops in and Harper drops a fly ball. When you're going bad, stuff like tonight happens.

Probably 9 out of 10 of Mad Bum's pitches were unhittable- breaking balls that break around the plate on the outside corner, balls where the only time they are in the strike zone is when they drop in the catcher's mitt. I'm not blaming the ump, Mad Bum was just on yesterday, painting the outside corner. Shrug... whaddya do?

I haven't been happy with all the approaches the Cubs have been taking at the plate and their swing rate at pitches outside the zone has been up but last night was a nothing they could do game imo. They hit the ball hard multiple times but the Giants played great defense and when you have an ace on his game backed by stellar defensive play there's not much more the hitters can do at that point. Especially when the ump is calling low and outside a strike as was happening On the plus side Soler is showing signs of life at the plate and in the field .

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
