Giants @ Cubs:  Cueto vs Lester (Game 44)

SF (20-26): RHP Johnny Cueto (4-3, 4.50)
CHC (22-21): LHP Jon Lester (2-2, 3.57)
First pitch: 6:00pmCST

Lester, who's moving ahead in the rotation for the third time this season, beat the Reds on Thursday (6 IP, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). He's 2-0 with a 2.03 at Wrigley so far this year--and 0-2 with a 5.73 on the road.

Overall, the Giants are 33-159 (.208) against him. Posey is 5-16 with a HR.

Cueto lost to the Dodgers his last time out, giving up 5 ER in 6 innings. The Cubs are 28-129 (.217) against him. Jay is 13-38 with 3 HR.

The weather is less than optimal, but if we play, it'll be on ESPN.

Tomorrow is Hendricks (3-2) for realz against Moore (2-4) at 7:05pm, then Butler (1-0) and the Shark (1-5) finish it off at 1:20pmCST on Thursday.

Go Cubs!

I thought he was good last night and next series is against the Dodgers (can't hit left handed pitching). He is coming off missing all of 2016 due to shoulder surgery, he would get much more playing time in Iowa, so that could be a reason for sending him down.

rain...game starting anyway. the infield getting mucked up might be an advantage. also the rain is blowing in at an angle into the batter's face.

i.happ in CF tracks a quick liner off the bat and snags it with a sliding catch...almora is sweating a bit more.

In reply to by Lester's rattl…

That's crazy right now. Schwarber's value has never been lower. In a year, if both Happ and Almora have established themselves and the front office can move Schwarber to a team that can play him at 1B or DH him in exchange for SP, then I could see it. Especially if Eloy doesn't look too far off at that point.

lester is the first cubs starter of the year to get past 7ip (5 times, lester has 3). he could easily go complete. 80 pitches to start the 8th. that said, w.davis hasn't pitched in a week.

Looks like the Lester-Contreras thing is working out OK. Nice CS by Willson to snuff the Giants only chance to get back in the game. Billybucks mojo continues -- now 3-0 on the season, with a Schwarber HR in each game!

It's looking like Lester's outing will only be the 2nd best pitching performance of the day... and I'm 100% ok with that, since it's Kershaw who's got a 2-hit shutout (10K) going through 8 against the Cardinals. A Dodger win would put us in a 2nd place tie with the Dirtybirds.

Never trade a power LH slugger who's hit in the playoffs the only two times he's been there in his young career.

happ is back (and starting), mervis DH, tauchman gets RF.

I don't care to see Hendricks or Smyly on the 26-man Roster the rest of the season. Both, stupid signings and option pick up by Jed.

i know the cubs are paying the guys, but for the sake of the win/loss column this is some great news.

woo!  people getting injured!  kick ass!

    sportsball is cruel.

would have liked to keep cooper, but it looks like they're gonna go with wisdom if they have to pick a righty who's gonna K 1/3rd of his PA's.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Edwards would be my guess, or maybe they’re hoping Sanders or R Thompson can finally figure it out

  • Cubster (view)

So it’s Mervis, Wesn and Little for Cooper, Hendricks and Smyly. Count me in. Starting rotation for now: Taillon, Imanaga, Wicks, Assad and Brown-Wesn. Eventually Steele.

    Lineup

Hoerner, Happ, Bellinger, Busch, Morel, Swanson, Tauchman, Mervis, Amaya.

Another year AZPhil, and you have more to do than ever! Heck yeah! Great stuff from Rosario so far. What are your impressions of guys like Freilyn Silverio, Adan Sanchez, Jose Escobar, and Anderson Suriel? Particularly the first two, feel like I’m forgetting one.

My first thought was that Hendricks was IL'd with a broken ERA, but after some quick research, you're right about MLB making at least some effort to discourage the "phantom IL."

luke little rejoins the MLB party...

    hendricks IL...lower back...

given recent backlash by MLB, i doubt this is a phanton IL.

wtf...also drew smyly to IL...right hip...

boston, houston, miami...lots of potential suitors for a backup 1st/DH who won't be pain if they need regular ABs
