Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Bradley vs Lackey (Game 53)

Electric Cubbieland—Hendricks has another dominant performance.

Four Cub HRs doesn’t hurt, either. We might have to take out some insurance on the new scoreboard in left, as long as Bryant’s on the team.

For today, it's:

AZ (24-32): RHP Archie Bradley (2-0, 6.11)
CHC (37-15): RHP John Lackey (5-2, 3.16)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey had another strong outing on Sunday, giving up 1 ER in 7 innings to finish the sweep of the Phills. He went 2-1 with a 2.09 in May. He beat the D’backs in his first start, despite giving up 6 ER in as many innings. (It helps when your team scores 14 runs.) The D’backs are 23-80 (.288) against him. Segura is 10-22 with 2 HR.

Bradley went 2-3 with a 5.80 in 8 starts in his rookie year and is having a similar season thus far in 3 starts, although he did have a quality start and win his last time out against the Padres (7.1 IP, 3 ER, 9 K, 1 BB). Heyward, the only Cub to face him, is 0-2.

Escobar (0-1, 18.90) versus Hammel (6-1, 2.09) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

I am most impressed recently with Hendricks being able to go deep in the game the past couple times when up to now he's been a 5 inning special. He's also second in baseball among qualified starters at soft hit %. I read him saying recently, by the way, that he worked on his conditioning over the off season because he ended up feeling fatigued at the end of last season. So both him and Hammel seemed to really work to address those conditioning issues.

Although Hendricks's career stats still suggest he is much less effective the third time through the order, this year's stats show that he's basically equally as effective the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd times through the order. It's a small sample, but then again, his 2014 and 2015 stats weren't a huge sample either.

Wondering how long it will take for these to get to their mean rates? This is Braves-like from the Smoltz-Maddux era.

Lackey is already mean. Lester shows some toughness, especially when a couple guys get on base, and he gets a pretty mean look on his face when umpires don't give him the calls he expects. Arietta isn't so much mean as determined and focused. I doubt his mean rate will change. Hammel still looks a little unsure of himself out there on occasion, and I don't see a lot of meanness in general. Hendricks doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Nice nerd.

The ump seems to be a Bryant fan. He missed the foul tip call and missed what looked like a pretty clear strike. Then Bryant doubled. Beefy, being the horrible catcher he is, didn't help on the foul tip as he had his pitch call crossed up with Bradley and went to block ball in dirt expecting curveball that then hit him square in the mask when it didn't break. Possible of course it was Bradley's fault, but I'm laying the blame on the guy I've got history with.

A. Bradley looking so far like the hyped-up A. Bradley we've been hearing about for years. Sometimes it takes a few years...

Joe: "Whatever Riz is hitting right now, easily add 25 points, easily, maybe 30 points without a shift." #Cubs

Wonder if he made up that number or it was given to him because they do keep track of that stuff on fangraphs I think...which makes me presume Cubs also keep track of it. Regardless, they adjust...you have to adjust.

Fangraphs shift stats are a bit odd because they exclude walk and HR abs but excluding those ABs he's been shifted on 88% of the time and has a .197 AVG and .276 SLG. He pulls the ball 43.8% of the time when the shift is on and 42.5% of his hits are ground-balls. In 2015 he was only shifted on 69% of the time and he had a .298 AVG against it. He had a 42.1% pull rate still so that is the same but his groundball rate was only 34.7%. So he's being shifted on a lot more and hitting the ball on the ground more towards it. So BABIP does matter some but when you're hitting the ball on the ground against the shift it's gonna eat you up.

BABIP Gods smile on Rizzo. Interesting route by Owings there. LaRussa is gonna take away his clubhouse beer.

Hack-a-Javy making an appearance today (0/3 K's so far)....Soler laid off though and worked a walk.

ugh Rizzo on the baserunning, should have been out by a lot, but a rather slow relay by Dbacks. Replay looks like he just got it in, but also looks like foot fell off bag and tag was still on him. Close enough that I'll be surprised if they overturn it.

that escalated quickly...Chris Owings having a helluva day.

Tim Federowicz getting the mercy PA.

It's nice to watch other teams lose in the same way I've been watching Cubs teams losing over the last 30+ years.

Nice move by Maddon to get Lackey after that 0-2 pitch in the middle of the plate -- looked like the one Matt Adams clobbered in STL. May need to keep a closer eye on Lackey when he gets near 100 pitches. I love watching Baez hit high FBs to right-center. Neat.

run diff up to 140 2nd best in MLB is BOS with 71...2nd best in the NL is WAS with 61.

Contreras with his 9th HR tonight -- he had 8 all of last year. Meanwhile, the Almora Walk Watch continues....holding at zero since April 23. That's just bizarre. Also, for fun -- Gleybar Torres with 3 doubles & a walk.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
