Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Corbin vs Arrieta (Game 55)

The Cubs go for another—*yawn*—sweep.AZ (24-34): LHP Patrick Corbin (2-5, 4.96)
CHC (39-15): RHP Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.56)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Arrieta had a no-decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday (7 IP, 0 ER, 8 K, 4 BB). He went 4-0 with a 2.08 in May. He beat the D’backs in Arizona in April, giving up 3 ER in 7 innings. They are 20-93 (.240) against him. Goldschmidt is 3-10 with a HR.

Corbin lost to the Astros his last time out (3.1 IP, 7 ER, 3 K, 2 BB). He went 1-2 with a 5.03 in May. He’s 0-4 with a 7.94 at home but 2-1 with a 2.68 on the road. The Cubs are 6-20 (.300) against him. Fowler is 5-12.

After 1/3 of the season, the Cubs have 39 wins. Without having to do any fancy math, 39 x 3 seems like a big number.

Lester (6-3, 2.29) versus Morgan (1-4, 7.07) in Philly at 6:05pmCST tomorrow.

Go, Cubs!

Heyward struggling at the plate all year... I sure hope he gets it together soon. He gets an amazing break from typical scrutiny b/c the team is playing so well, so one would think he could start figuring it out. Maybe his wrist injury is worse than the Team is letting on?

The weekend has not been kind to 9-game winners. Sale lost & Strasburg ND (team lost), Jake ND at best.

I'm a couch coach, so I don't really know what I'm talking about. But, we let Soler take the AB in the 8th with Rizzo and Heyward available against Clippard. Then, we double switch Soler out. Also, we pinch hit for Baez. I like TLS, but for Russell, not Baez. I think we could have mixed and matched better there to end the game today. But, we lost because we wouldn't take Corbin up the middle or oppo. Too many rollovers. Oh well.

Yeah, I thought they would let Javy take a shot to tie it up. Russell scuffling -- avg. down from .250 to .236 over the past week, while Baez has 2 HR in his last 4 games. But, Russell has done well in late innings, so... For me, the only real disappointments this year have been the offenses of Heyward and Russell (Heyward's D has remained stellar, Russell's has been pretty solid). Hopefully Addy can crank it up -- he has shown signs (please hit to RF!). Heyward, other than one hot series against Cincy in April, has been consistently lousy at the plate. I fear this will be a "pressing to meet the big contract" year -- the longer the year goes with his average below .250, the more attention it will get -- hopefully next year will be more like his history.

Good luck ever figuring out baseball. Cubs go 8-2 on the home stand -- both losses were Arrieta starts against pitchers with ERAs near 5.00.

As a Cubs fan I can relate but it must so be frustrating to Pirates fans that every time the Pirates have won lately so have we and when we finally lose so do they. It's a long season and a lot can still happen but I am enjoying pissed off Pirates and Cardinals fans tremendously.

A caller on WSCR mentioned that the Cubs are 0-4 on getaway Sunday games at Wrigley (Rockies, Pirates, Braves and Dbacks). They have actually won on Sundays at Wrigley when the next game is a home game. Caller was irked because he bought a 6 game Sunday package and has seen 25% of their losses. Small sample size, sure. Or Maddon is doing something randomly wrong on getaway days.

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

  • crunch (view)

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
