per Roto... Jorge Soler (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on Tuesday. Soler exited Monday's game against the Phillies with a left hamstring injury. The Cubs will look at the test results before deciding on a possible stint on the disabled list. Source: Mark Gonzales on Twitter Wittenmeyer/Sun-times article says Murton likely call up but some chance we'll see Almora http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/cubs-soler-leaves-game-with-hamstrin…

Ugh this sucks. He has a .882 OPS in the last 28 days and 1.084 in the last week and his fielding has been much better. You could tell how unhappy he was after the game and how much he wants to be out there. I had just come up with a great line when we face the Pirates too so he needs to be back by then : "we don't need any Cole because this team is Soler powered."

When it comes puns I try to give my Almora will be coming soon as I try to deal with this injury and hope the Cubs don't drop a Schlitter on us. Last night was a bit Grimm at the end but these Cubs can still give us Wood with their pitching and Russell up some great offense so we should be fine.

Nothing much to report from the Joe Maddon WSCR regular show at noon. Solar MRI results not in. Supposedly said that if Almora is called up, he won't be an everyday player. He'll be worked into the lineup like everyone else. Said Almora fits the team's culture and he lauds how he's played and carried himself in spring training.

It's no different then not playing Soler everyday and playing the matchups. When Soler started hitting more he started playing more and I assume the same will hold true for Almora. Though personally I don't believe in either Stella or Szczur as starters and would rather keep them as pinch hitters or to give starters a rest. Don't expect a lot bat wise from Almora though. He had a .327 OBP last year and .335 this year. That does not seem like it will translate very well to the majors.

Well..okay. But Soler had played 101 games in MLB last year right? They didn't bring him up from AAA and start sitting him. If Almora was putting up a .318/.375/.444 line in AAA, maybe I'd feel better about it. I'd rather see LaStella and Szczur mix and mtch, with Bryant shuttling from LF to 3B

If you mean you don't think Almora should be brought up at all then I agree. It's going to depend on how long Soler is out but assuming it's just a short term thing I'd rather Murton get brought up because it doesn't really matter if he sits a lot. If Almora does get brought up though the difference with Soler last year is this year's team is deeper and the expectations are higher.

Pirates bringing up Jameson Taillon, starts tomorrow vs Mets. Might see him vs Pirates next weekend at Wrigley (if he stays up). If Cubs rotation doesn't change and nobody is skipped with some off days coming, the Pirates series would be Arrieta, Lester, Hendricks

Perhaps Murton not getting called up is to avoid DFAinng him when Soler returns. He's hitting .311 with an OBP of .350 in Iowa right now, along with his experience, another team in need of an outfielder (Giants for example) could take a flyer on Murton. Also, Soler on DL, Almora called up is now official: https://twitter.com/CSNMooney/status/740264507554037760

If the term strain is being used correctly, it means muscle injury. Sprain is used for ligaments. Tear is not the usual term here and is more for meniscal cartilage injury. Technically though, the muscle is disrupted or torn. The tendon that attaches to muscle can be injured too but with hamstrings, it's usually one of the muscle belly's that gets injured. The hamstrings are a group of muscles and they have origins from the pelvis and femur. The Lateral hamstring has two heads of origin, is called the biceps femoris and attaches near the lateral collateral ligament of the knee (the ligament that Kyle Schwarber injured). The medial hamstrings include the sartorius, semimembranosis and semitendinosis muscles which insert below and on the inside of the knee. Hamstring muscle injuries rarely need surgery (unless it's the tendon insertion that is torn) because sewing up muscle belly is like using stitches to put two cubes of jello together (it just doesn't hold). The good news is muscle heals or at least can be built up to compensate for any surrounding residual bad jello. The medial hamstring tendon of the semitendinosis muscle is often used for graft material in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery. It's somewhat expendable based on this.

Looking forward, Almora will "probably" be CF next year. Fowler has a mutal option for $5 MIL buyout. My guess is is Fowler will say no and walk and take the $5 MIL, if the Cubs said yes I feel like the Cubs should only have to give him $2.5MIL. Kind of like they both write their answers on a card and flip them at the same time to see what the pay out will be, not the team getting stuck with the whole $5MIL if Dexter says no and Cubs yes.

even if almora is just a doug glanville type, at least he's got 4-6 years of affordable cost during his club control. him and scruzrurzzrurzr (and heyward) should be able to adequately cover CF even if it's not a platoon situation and a bit of a downgrade from fowler. given the amount of time schwarber and soler (and bryant) should be in the corner OF, you gotta imagine we'll be seeing almora and his D/arm/coverage in CF more than anyone else.

I will be in one of the nosebleed sections to tonight's game down the RF line.  Will take very uninteresting pictures and give a very uninteresting report back, after...

More like Bryant for that terrible OF play. Russell's catch, on the other hand, was ridiculous and he even did the roll to his feet after just for further awesomeness.

Richard won't get DFA'd unless they trade for a LHRP. He has a 3.35 FIP and has getting ground balls, but they keep getting through. Needs to locate pitches better. Wouldn't expect Concepcion (another lefty) in AAA who's pitching very well to get called up unless there is an injury because he started the year in AA. Other than that, there is very little LHRP depth.

yeah, he's probably here a while longer. concepcion hasn't been doing that great after a hot start and g.soto (on the 40 man) has been a disaster in AAA. soto seems like a lost cause. concepcion will probably get a callup at some point.

Richard should pitch in low leverage situations until he starts playing better. Pull the plug on him if he continues to struggle when pitching in 5+ run leads. Also, Richard doesn't pitch often enough to get into a good rhythm. Concepcion is a strong candidate for a September call up or if Wood gets injured (knock on wood). Next time I want to see Richard is in the 9th inning of a 7-0 game.

While some of what Richards is giving up is bad luck (BABIP is .447) it's also compounded by his inability to get much swing and miss. He only has a 6% swing and miss rate and 10.4% K rate, both of which are terrible. He isn't fooling anyone and so while he gets lots of ground-balls they're hard hit. He's throwing a career high amount of fastballs and isn't throwing a cutter at all and very little of his slider which to me would partially explain why he's not fooling anyone. Not sure why he's doing that this year but when you throw a fastball only averaging 91.9 86% of the time it has to be very well located to have any success.

Russell's catch was as awesome live as it looked on the big acreen replay.  Bryant looked lost on the flyball.  I have the Ueker seat.....

Man, how many .200-ish hitters can the team support in one lineup?

heyward...sigh. bases loaded, 0 out...sac fly fowler, double play heyward.

well, there was another guy left on the bench, but he's not allowed to play baseball...and would have been a worse option anyway. it would be nice if someone else was around who could have hit in that situation. we're 27 days into fed sitting on the bench...5 PA, 2 innings of D.

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

  • crunch (view)

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.
