Hendricks gave up 3 R (2 earned) over 5 innings for the 6-3 win in DC. He pitched well, with the only blemish being a second inning HR to Desmond--and that he only threw 84 pitches and lasted 5 innings. Hendricks faced the Reds twice last year, including in September, when he gave up 1 ER over 7 and got the win. The Reds are hitting .261 against him.

Leake won against Philly at home his last time out, giving up 2 ER over 6. The Cubs have had some success against him. Coghlan is 9-11 (.818) with 2 HR and 3 2Bs, Rizzo is 10-25 (.400) with a HR, and the Old Castro is 14-49 (.289).

After yesterday, Bryant, with 8 errors, has the lowest fielding percentage for 3B in the NL. He has not hit a HR since May 26 (when he went back to back in games against WAS) and (with 7) is now on pace for 19 HR. In related news, Mike Olt played 3B for 4 innings and went 1-3 (with 2 Ks, a walk, and a run scored) for the Mesa Cubs in EXST.

The late start time will give us plenty of time to ponder: What’s up with this late start time? Update: Thanks Fox...

Go Cubs!

BP's Chris Crawfords comments on the Cubs/Day one draft picks... http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26595 9. Chicago Cubs Ian Happ, OF, Cincinnati There are some guys who just get hitting. Ian Happ is one of those guys. The switch-hitting outfielder was the best pure hitter for me in the draft, and is a great pick for the Cubs (yes, I know, you wanted a pitcher). His swing is excellent from both sides of the plate, and there's sneaky pop from the left-side as well, with enough strength to drive into the gaps from the right. The question is whether he'll play second base or the outfield, but wherever he plays, he's going to hit. Another great pick from Theo Epstein and company. and BP's Chris Crawford, commenting on Day 2 of the baseball draft, he no like-ee the Cubs 4th round pick, Darryl Wilson: Round 4 Questionable value: 113. Chicago Cubs: Darryl Wilson, OF, Canton South HS (Oh.) I loved much of what the Cubs did over the first two draft days, but this was one of my least favorite picks of day two. Wilson’s an above-average runner with a swing that has some strength, so he’s not completely without upside. The swing needs a ton of work though, and his overall baseball skills have a ways to go. Not hitting on your fourth-round pick won’t crush you, but there were better prep bats on the board than Wilson. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26610

montero's 9th HR...tied with busta posey in the NL for C. 4th HR in june. baxter playing RF, btw...he hit a single...he hits singles.

holy shit...hendricks hit a sac bunt! 1st successful sac bunt for a cubs pitcher this season.

Did you all know that Hendricks went to Dartmouth, an Ivy League university? And he studies video! A lot! Wow!

Hope Maddon made them watch the Hawks on the jumbotron. Hawks are tough bastards. /onemorewin

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat #Cubs vs #Reds will be back on FOX when play resumes. Scheduled start time 10:20 pm CT

James Russell 3 days in a row....not a good idea. Rain delay further screws up the bullpen....Crap.

How in the world did they not score in the 8th???? This game has a really crappy feeling to it -- Reds tie it on a HR by a no-power guy, then the Cubs get 3 hits in the 8th, 1st and 3rd one up Rizzo up vs. a crap RH pitcher, and he can;t get the ball to the outfield??? WTF????

I've never seen MLB pitchers refuse to pitch to a rookie so soon - they started right away on him, but I sure understand why they do. The guy really knows so much about baseball already. That slide was amazing. He's gonna be the damn MJ of baseball if he stays healthy. Imagine what he's gonna be like when his HR stroke comes around, which it will.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
