Update: Montero was scratched with a tight back.

Still looking for his first win of the season, Wada has pitched only 6.2 innings in his last two games (vs. CIN, @WAS), giving up 8 ER. His last W was Aug. 24. None of the Indians have faced him.

Marcum got the win against Seattle in his last outing, going 7 scoreless in the 6-0 game. The Cubs are 12-59 (.203) against him. Fowler is 2-12, Castro is 2-19 with a HR, Montero is 1-5 with a HR.

Marcum has a 3.00 ERA on the road but 4.71 at Progressive Field. That difference is one of the reasons the Indians have a losing record at home (12-18). The Cubs are 16-15 away from Wrigley.

Rosscup went on the DL today with left shoulder inflammation. RHP Yoervis Medina, acquired from SEA in the Castillo trade, takes his place. His numbers for Iowa are pretty schlitty: 11.2 innings, 6 runs, 15 hits, 4.63 ERA, 1.88 WHIP.

Bryant has a 12-game hitting streak, his second of the season, and is hitting .327 in June. Meanwhile, Rizzo is 3 for his last 29.

As advertised, Schwarber DHs, after making his debut last night. He caught the top of the 9th (after Montero got tossed for saying what needed to be said about balls and strikes) and struck out swinging on three straight pitches to lead off the bottom half. Schwarber hails from the Cincinnati area, so he’ll have a good contingent of family and friends on hand to see him get his first hit.

Go Cubs!

rizzo HR! cubs up 6-0 with 2 out in the 2nd. s.marcum is pitching some really shitty baseball.

See this game is a perfect reason never to worked up about any one game either way. We get blown out yesterday, we are blowing out tonight but it'll still just ultimately be 1 win and 1 loss.

You know Marcum's knick-name when he was with the Brewers, right? Meatball Marcum Glad Cleveland pitched him tonight so the Cubs can regain some confidence.

Pierce Johnson 5 shutout innings at AA. 3H, 1BB, 4K Corey Black 2 shutout IP, innings 8-9. 1H, 0BB, 1K Neil Ramirez (rehab) 1 shutout IP, inning 6. 0H, 0BB, 0K Smokies won 8-0.

~walks into room~ ~sits down straightens pants and shirt~ What did I miss?

Anybody ever play the Backyard Baseball computer game? Tonight's game reminded me of a Backyard Baseball game where the other team's pitchers all ran out of juice and had to be switched out for position players every few batters. Ridiculous.

If that had been Bryant's 74th home run of the season, would there be an asterisk? Based on his reaction on his way to the dugout I think so.

He does have a fair amount of strikeouts, but he also has a lot of walks, thus the ratio. The numbers don't match up exactly with the rankings, but they based this on the BB/SO ratio (if you read the topic paragraph brefore the rankings). You can see that listed for each player. For Schwarber it is 0.86. Major League average this year is 0.38, so article highlights 10 guys in the minors who are much better than that and doing well, thus projecting well going forward.

"they based this on the BB/SO ratio" I just wondered if you saw something I didn't see in the article that would explain the rankings. It's certainly not BB/SO, but I guess it's a combination of BB/SO and ISO. (The guys near the top of the list tend to have more pop.) But then how do you explain Diaz at #7 and Zagunis at #8? Oh, I see, Diaz "gun[ned] down 32 percent of basestealers." Now it makes sense.

"Most improved" can be rather faint praise. It depends what the numbers were last year. Almora's 12 walks to 20 strikeouts is certainly better than his 14/69 last year. The Cubs have eleven prospects right now with better BB/K numbers than Almora's current .60. Eight of the eleven have BB/K's of .80 or higher. They are Zagunis (1.18), Young (1.08), Rademacher (.96), Soto (.86), Schwarber (.86), McKinney (.83), Vogelbach (.80) and Chen (.80). All eight of these prospects have OBPs of .350 or higher. Almora's OBP is .290.

You are really overthinking this. It's not a list of the 10 best BB/SO ratios in the minors. They are simply highlighting 10 top prospects who are doing really well in that respect. They are also clearly highlighting guys you may not have heard as much about but who they think will be better hitters than you probably think (see the title) given this part of their game.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
