Some games, like Thursday’s, you feel like you mighta, coulda, shoulda, probably could have won. Then there are games like yesterday’s, when you are beaten multiple times in nearly every possible way. Bleh. Castro apologized for his mental flub, but there was plenty of blame to go around. The only highlights were Rizzo’s 2 HRs--and that Jackson continues to pitch well when it doesn’t matter. (There might have been more, but I was watching Deadwood by the 7th inning.)

It’s pretty clear that if this team wants to compete down the stretch, TheJedi are going to have to go out and get another starter. Am I right? If Philly got real with their asking price, Hamels and Papelbon would be really nice additions.

You’re only as good (or as bad) as the next day’s starting pitcher, and ours has been a mixed bag. Lester gave up 1 ER over 7 but didn’t factor in the 2-1 win over the Reds on Sunday. He has not won a game since May 16. Not good. He is no stranger to the Twins, of course, who are a collective 36-125 (.288) against him. Hunter is 14-28 and Mauer is 8-23. Over the last three years, Lester is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in four starts against the Twins, but in his last appearance at Target Field, he gave up 5 ER in 7 innings.

The 25-year old May joined the team last August and went 3-6 with a 7.88 in 10 starts. He lost against the Cards his last time out, giving up 3 ER over 5. He is 1-2 with a 2.00 ERA in June. None of the Cubs have faced him.

The Iowa-bound Schwarber showed off his human side last night by going 0-3, and Bryant snapped his 14-game hitting streak, so he’ll get to start again.

Go Cubs!

Megamillions needs to start pitching like he his contract says he should before he becomes the poster boy of the bullshit that is modern free agency.

I don't know about your assertion on acquiring pitching. This team is 4th in the NL in runs allowed. But they are 8th in runs scored, closer to 10th than 7th. The other thing about the hitting is that the 3 pitching teams ahead of them are all likely playoff contenders, including PIT and STL, one of whom will almost definitely be the home team in the 1-game playoff if the Cubs make the dance. I think the team would be better served by Reddick, or Upton if he will be available, which seems increasingly likely, than by overpaying for someone like Hamels.

I have stated I felt Castro would get traded this year in the Spring. If the Cubs can get a bona fide #2 or better, I still think he will be gone. No matter what the front office states, there is a better SS who is now playing 2nd base for the team. The big question is how can the offfense get replaced this year should a trade happen. Long way to go this year, but it may get harder for the Cubs to make the playoffs being in the same division with the Bucs and Cards as other have noted. I forgot, exactly howdid the Pirates end up in the NL Central again?

As a Castro defender, I'd be happy with a bona fide #2. His recent talent for getting big time late inning hits will at least help increase his value. Team keep walking guys to get to him, and he keeps making them pay. He is really quite the enigma, but part of that's what makes baseball fun.

There should be some natural improvement with the offense as Bryant finds his HR stroke, Russell settles in, and Solar gets back without his thermal gear. That's why I'm more worried about the pitching.

I agree about not overpaying. The idea that we would give up 3 prospects, especially when one of them would have to be Russell, is nuts. From what I've been reading, Philly has only been more willing to kick in some dough for the contract/s, which is probably why it won't (and shouldn't) happen. I feel less tight about spending the Ricketts' money, though.

By the way, I've never liked this one-game Wild Card play-in bullshit. And inclined to like it even less if it means one and done for us. So dumb...

going into the 8th of a tie game and maddon hasn't used 3/4 of the pen or all of the bench yet. amazing.

d.ross with his 1st 2-hit game of the season...first multi-hit game since july 22, 2014.

That's the thing .... Fits your Ritalin theory, he was so embarrassed yesterday he came to play today. As a weathered all star and professional we need him to concentrate every day. Consistancy is the hallmark of the pro ball player. Many have streaks of raw talent.

There are lots of things I like about Castro - it's why I am leery of all the trade talk about him, since I don't think he'll bring fair value right now, although his last 3 game winners are probably pushing that value up a bit. An example of things I like: when he got beaned the other day, he showed off his huge welt and has kept playing through that. He's a tough kid. His baby face makes him not look tough, but he is a bit of an iron man out there. He's not an easy guy to get out of the lineup. Yesterday he was brilliant in the field, and that ball he hit for the game winner was not a BP pitch by any means. But there is no denying the lapses. I've heard Castro say over and over again he needs to be more aggressive in the field, that it's the key to cutting the errors down. The weird thing about the error the other day was how he fell asleep in the middle of it all and that second run scored. I don't know how else to account for such strangeness other than something somewhat medical in the way his brain works. If that's the case, he'll be fighting it his whole career. The other possibility, aside from something like ADD, is maybe the kid parties too much at night sometimes, and it's those next days where he has his lapses. I almost hope that's the case. There's a cure for that, at least.

I wouldn't be that quick to jump to a diagnostic explanation based on the play two days ago. I remember seeing Jacque Jones lollygag after a ball in the outfield after diving for it and missing the catch (can't remember if it turned into a 3B or an inside the parker). And I'm sure we all remember Milton Bradley throwing the ball into the stands at Wrigely when it was only the second out. And Ryan Theriot's various TOOTBLANs never led to any medical discovery. The frequency of Castro's lapses of focus are concerning, but no one of them is so egregious as to require an explanation any more clinical than "brain fart."

perfect game going, down by 6, 8.2ip, batter leans into an inside pitch and there goes the perfect game. cold.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

  • crunch (view)

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.
