Cubs @ Mets: Lester vs Syndergaard (Game 81)

The bad news is that we’re still in New York; the good news is that the Reds will be waiting for us at Wrigley.CHC (51-29): LHP Jon Lester (9-3, 2.03)
NYM (43-37): RHP Noah Syndergaard (8-3, 2.49)
First pitch: 12:10pmCST

Lester had a no-decision in Cinci on Tuesday (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB). He went 4-0 with a 1.41 in June. Overall, the Mets are 38-157 (.242) against him. Loney is 4-13.

Syndergaard lost in DC his last time out (3 IP, 5 ER, 5 K, 3 BB). He went 3-1 with a 3.86 in June. The Cubs are 7-19 (.368) against him. Bryant and Heyward are each 2-3.

Reed (0-2, 9.00) and the Reds versus Hendricks (6-6, 2.76) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST in Chicago (!).

Go Cubs!

Zobrist (2B), Hayward (CF), Bryant (RF), Rizzo, Contreras (LF), Candelario (3B), Baez (SS), Ross, Lester Candyman is another switch hitter to add to the mix. LaStella must not be ready but I was already tired of watching Coghlan. So when TLS is ready I wonder what gives?

...or is Candelario being showcased in NYC (for Andrew Miller or Betances)? Hmmm, Uniform No. 7 for the Yankees is retired.

Okay all you experts in baseball personnel. Opinions on Andrew Miller. I don't follow the American League beyond knowing vaguely that it exists. I'd like to know, amidst all this talk of trade, what you guys really think of this guy. I value your opinions a LOT more than the baseball press.

a.miller is "cheap" compared to market value (2/18m left) for a couple years going forward and he's pretty much one of the best, if not the best, pen arms in the game. at this point it's not a fluke...and unlike gagne he's probably not on a massive amount of roids and hgh. he's a fastball/slider guy who relies very heavily on his slider. that's a bit concerning, but at the same time it would be a 2.something year rental that's not bad on the loot, not a 5+ year contract. he also works well vs lefties and righties. there's pros/cons to it...big pro, he'd be under contract relatively cheap during a period in this team's development where having one of the best relievers would make sense...big con, it will burn some good prospects, the kind that could get the team something more robust than a 60-70ip guy if needed.

Dear Cubs's scouting department. Please find out what the Mets have figued out about your pitching staff. Thanks, and have a nice holiday.

I DON'T LIKE THIS GAME! :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( ...lester lasts 1.1ip, giving up 8 runs and leaves 2 on. my gawd. ...shortest outing of his career.

Well, Rondon will be well rested going into the Reds series. A different version of screw the closer.

Sorry, gang.

If it's any consolation, I have a pretty good view of where the balls are landing.

3 HRs, borderline calls not going our way, soft contact resulting in hits, some bad luck for Lester indeed, but the HRs were mistake pitches. I think we get back on track quickly. We've had the Reds and Pirates's number all season long. And the Braves suck. Let's go into the ASG break positively before a nice challenge with the Rangers to start the 2nd half. I predict we go 5-2 this week against the Reds, Braves, and Pirates.

Get the hell out of NY! And don't go back! Cubs starters in July -- worst in MLB. I didn't expect them to all keep ERAs under 3.00, but this seems a bit dramatic.

Lester NL pitcher of the month in June. Might not win the award in July, unless the Mets get to vote.

By all means Joe if we ever again get a two-run lead in the 7th on the road in the opening game of a series against the team that knocked us out of the playoffs bring in the worst pitcher is baseball, who is 40-years-old to boot - not a good pitcher like Strop or Wood - so you can blow that game and ruin the spirits of Cubs fans and demoralize your whole damn team and start a losing streak. Why? Because you think you are such a genius that you can bring in anybody off the street outside and they'll make you look good.

Simmer down. The team got every break possible the first two months of the season. Stuff like Bryce Harper, reigning MVP dropping an easy fly ball allowing the Cubs to win. Perfect plate discipline, timely hitting, solid pen, great starting pitching. Did you really think they would sustain that for the whole year - including injuries to Dexter Fowler, Schwarber, and Soler? Not every rookie can be Bryant, and playing youth can have plenty of downsides includiing head-shaking errors/stupidity that can cost a game (Russell, Baez, Almora). When they get back to full-strength, and the bullpen can count on a LOOGY, you'll see a better prodect out there other than this shit. Also, sometimes managers try to "showcase" a player to both give them a shot in a highleverage situation to see if they can perform, OR to show the GM "This is the horseshit you give me! See it for yourself!" This was kinda the case with R. Soriano.

Over/under on how many pitches Patton throws before they ship him back to Iowa? 130? 150? Tough day to be Spencer Patton.

hell, when's the last time he's thrown this many innings? 2013 in A-ball or something? it wasn't a horrible 1.2 innings to begin with compared to the 2ip that followed it. someone had to throw those innings, though. i guess peralta was busy filling out his AARP paperwork. ...oh hey, peralta's on the mound in the 6th.

heyward...wtf was that? evidently, it's an off-game for more than just lester.

i can hear the paperwork for peralta being DFA'd being filled out all the way from new york. crazy.

miggy's gonna pitch now. the circus is back in town. 79-81mph "sinking" fastball. he tries to get cute and throw a curve for a HBP. groundout! 0.1ip 0h 0bb 0k, 1hpb ...okay, miggy's out to pitch the 8th, too. 30 pitches. 1.1ip 4h 0bb 0k, 1hbp 1r/er

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
