Reds @ Cubs: Finnegan vs Lackey (Game 83)

Watching the Reds pitch is like watching turkeys getting dropped from a helicopter--but we'll take it.CIN (30-54): LHP Brandon Finnegan (3-7, 4.48)
CHC (52-30): RHP John Lackey (7-4, 3.27)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey, unlike the other starters, escaped from New York without a loss (6.1 IP, 2 R, 5 K, 2 BB). He was 2-2 with a 3.47 in June. He’s 1-1 with a 5.84 against the Reds this year. Overall, they are 43-164 (.262) against him. Votto is 5-17 with 2 HR.

Finnegan got filibustered in DC his last time out (2.1 IP, 8 ER, 2 K, 5 BB). He went 2-3 for the month. He’s 0-1 with a 5.91 in his two starts against the Cubs this year. They are 6-39 (.154) against him. Zobrist is 1-5 with a HR.

DeSclafani (2-0, 1.78) versus Warren (3-1, 4.56) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

I don't really get the Warren thing -- he pitches to give everyone an extra day, but then they are going to skip Hendricks and pitch Lackey (the oldest SP) Sunday vs. PIT on regular rest -- and then comes the AS break which gives everyone extra rest. Weird.

a.russell hits #10...and vs the reds that's cubs HR #30 on the season...crazy. ...and hits #11. bryant and baez also chimed in with homers.

When Peralta is your best pitcher in the game -- it's a very bad day. Rough trip through the rotation -- Hammel, Lester and now Lackey have been terrible in succession. Yuck.

cubs are 5-11 in their last 16 since they started their "losing stretch" with the STL series losing sweep...yow. 4 of those wins are vs CIN and 1 vs MIA. the best part is that this is happening and we're still not talking about what teams are how many games back because the division lead is still massive. sweet.

5 Cubs voted in - Entire infield (Rizzo, Zobrist, Russell and Bryant) plus Fowler. Russell got lucky (7th in fWAR, even lower if just looking at offense), but the rest are quite deserving... although you'd have to presume Fowler would have given a little back if he wasn't injured.

Figure Arrieta will definitely join them. Lester might too depending on when players and managers voted. Hendricks probably deserves a spot too, but can't imagine he'd get the support. Rondon's numbers are deserving too except for actual saves since he gets so few opportunities.

@_ChrisCurtis Theo Epstein signed or drafted half (8) of the 16 All Star starters named today.

Pirates beat the Cards again. Cards now 18-25 at home, +10 on the road. OK -- Pirates sweep Cards, then we sweep Pirates.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
