Rays @ Cubs: Snell vs Lackey (Game 84)

TB (44-41): LHP Blake Snell (0-5, 5.36)
CHC (41-42): RHP John Lackey (5-9, 5.24)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey gave up 8 ER in 5.1 innings to lose to the Nationals on Wednesday. He’s been equally shitty at home and on the road (1-4, 5.13 and 4-5, 5.33, respectively) and month after month (a 5.00+ ERA in April, May, and June).

Overall, the Rays are 31-104 (.298) against him. Longoria is 14-40 with 2 HR.

Snell lost in Pittsburgh in his first return start after his AAA-Durham demotion (5 IP, 6 ER, 6 K, 5 BB). None of the Cubs have faced him.

It's Davies (9-4) and the Brewers versus Montgomery (1-5) in a single-game makeup/showdown with the division leaders tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Shut out through 4 innings by Blake Snell. Blake. Snell. The low points of 2017 keep getting lower, and the high points are fewer and farther between. If they keep playing with such little life, the boo-birds may be out his weekend.

this game is full of bad breaks for the cubs...but at some point you gotta make your own breaks. what im basically saying is an expendable player like la stella which maddon doesn't like to play for some reason needs to charge the TB dugout and start breaking bones. can't hit the ball if you can't hold a bat. just saying.

Finally something good happened in this game - can't let a rare quality and homerless start by Lackey go to waste. I'm still on board with TLS laying waste to the Rays though.

when you ask your #4 hitter to bunt over a couple guys on base maybe it's time for a new #4 hitter. speaking of, happ might be a good candidate for that #4 hitter role. cubs lead by 2.

yeah, i dont got a problem with the play with the guy who was slotted there...it's more about who was slotted there to begin with. zobrist is doing almost nothing for the guy hitting before him and very little for the people hitting behind him. bit worn out seeing inferior hitters with primo batting slots from a manager who's supposed to be ahead of the curve on these kinds of things. schwarber was a headache, himself...200+ PA in the 1/2 slot for a sub-.300 ob%...c'mon maddon. i know he doesn't have a slam-dunk crew of stellar hitters he's working with here (outside of bryzzo), but zobrist seems to be a rather poor choice cashing in what's before him and setting up what's behind him.

Of the 19 other teams who have played, or are already playing, today Zobrist has the lowest OPS for a cleanup batter. Lowest was .760 with the average in the mid .800s. Makes no sense to keep Zobrist in that spot.

    matt shaw (AA) has a .381/.552/.905 line through 7 games...3 homers and a triple.  6 games at 3rd, 1 game DH (5 PO, 7 A, 0 E).

    that's somewhat fun news.

i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
