And we’re back..!

Hendricks was great in his outing against the White Sox on Friday (7 IP, 0 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BBs) but didn’t get the win in the 1-0 Cubbie loss. He’s working on a 20.1 inning scoreless streak that covers three games. Pierzynski and Markakis have a couple ABs against him. Pierzynski’s lone hit was a HR.

Teheran had a no decision his last time out, against the Brewers (7 IP, 3 ER, 2 HR, 8 Ks, 3 BBs). His biggest problem is the home-road split: 5-0, 2.04 versus 1-4, 6.95. The Cubs are 11-52 against him lifetime. Coghlan is 2-6 with a HR, Rizzo is 1-12 with a HR, and Castro is 1-11.

We’ll see Lester (4-8, 3.59) vs. Banuelos (1-0, 0.75) tomorrow and Arrieta (10-5, 2.66) vs. Miller (5-5, 2.38) to close out the series.

Montero (left thumb) is expected to be out for six weeks or so--that is, past the September call-up deadline. Schwarber (3 HR, 10 RBI, .333/.403/.633 in 17 games for Iowa) could be here to stay--catching and batting second?! Soriano could be here Sunday or Monday, and it looks like Wada (who pitched 6 effective innings yesterday) might be back sooner than later.

Go Cubs!

"Diamondbacks placed C Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 12, with a strained left neck." doh... with welly doing great and their rule 5 pick oscar hernandez around, salty might be done with the dbacks. it's been an interesting revolving door for their C crew since before the season began.

LHP Andrw McKIrhan's 80-game PED suspension is up on Monday, as is his 15-day Restricted List minor league rehab assignment.

McKirahan was selected by the Miami Marlins off the Cubs AAA Iowa roster in the Major League Phase of the December 2014 Rule 5 Draft, and was claimed by the Atlanta Braves on 4/1 (with the Braves assuming the Rule 5 obligations) after the Narlins placed him on waivers.

McKirahan was dinged with the PED suspension on 4/20 and was immediately placed on the Restricted List, and spent the rest of April, May, and June at Braves Extended Spring Training before being assigned to AAA Gwinnett on July 10th. NOTE: Prior to being reinstated, an MLB player who is on the Restricted List as the result of a suspension related to a violation of the ban on the use of a prohibited substance may consent to an assignment to a minor league affiliate of his club for no more than five days (eight days for pitchers) if the player is serving a suspension of 25 games or less, or for no more than ten days (15 days for pitchers) if the player is serving a suspension greater than 25 games.

So McKirahan will complete his suspension and be reinstated from the Restricted List on Monday, at which point the Braves will need to decide if they wish to place him back on their MLB 25-man roster (as he remains a Rule 5 player), or try and sneak him through waivers (as the Marlins tried to do at the end of Spring Training).

If the Braves place McKirahan on Outright Assignment Waivers and he is claimed by another MLB club, the claiming club would assume the Rule 5 obligations (as the Braves did when they claimed McKirahan off waivers on 4/1).

If he is placed on Outright Assignment Waivers and is not claimed, the Cubs would have the opportunity to reclaim McKirahan for half the Rule 5 Draft price ($25,000), and if that happens, I would think the Cubs will reclaim McKirahan (at which point McKirahan would automatically be sent outright to AAA Iowa).

Or (presuming McKirahan is not claimed off waivers) the Cubs could agree to allow the Braves to keep McKirahan (and send McKirahan outright to the minors) in return for the Braves sending the Cubs a different player (or maybe as part of a trade involving other players).

In other words, the McKirahan situation could possibly spur the Braves and Cubs to start trade talks this weekend which could lead to a deal involving other players. (The Cubs traded LHRP James Russell and IF-OF Emilio Bonifacio to the Braves for minor league C Victor Caratini just about this time last year, but of course that's when the Cubs were the "selles" and the Braces were "buyer." It would be the opposite this season.

schwarb! single...welcome back.

Well, that was new -- nobody hits (other than Schwarber) -- Bryant and Rizzo 0-4 w/RISP, and, for the 3rd time in 8 tries, Strop blows a game. Same old, same old. Cubs now 1-3 against the easy part of their schedule -- only win was when Jake pitched a CG and hit a HR. Not good. A HR from someone other than a pitcher would be nice -- Rizzo and Bryant couldn't even hit HRs in the HR Derby! I think Strop has shown he doesn't have the balls to pitch late innings in tight games when the games matter -- too many walks a/k/a no guts. Good arm, but pitch him in the 6th inning.

Four Cubs minor leaguers are playing in the Pan American games: CF Albert Almora Jr (for Team USA), 3B Jesse Hodges and RHRP Jasvir Rakkar (for Team Canada), and RHP Andres Santiago (for Team Puerto Rico).

The Bronze medal (Cuba vs Puerto Rico) and Gold medal (USA vs Canada) games are today, so the four players should be returning to Tennessee (Almora and Santiago), Myrtle Beach (Rakkar), and South Bend (Hodges) within a couple of days.

Looks like he might the cliche veteran pitcher in spring not really ramping it up and just “forking on stuff” in spring. If he gets to 94 on the regular he’ll do just fine.

topped out a 94mph, threw 4 of those.  feeling a lot better about neris.

  • crunch (view)

neris has thrown 2 pitches at 93mph out of his first 5 pitches.  that's a positive turn.

I really am not interested in the wesneski head case experience again any time soon. Give me smyly over wesneski. Hell give me keegan Thompson over wesneski every day of the week. His stuff isn’t as good but at least he doesn’t melt down mentally every time something goes mildly awry.

they might not want to start the clock on brown and give us wesn.  hopefully it won't come to that.

    madrigal ground rule double!

he blows a play and hits a double.  we're getting bizarro madrigal.

    Hope so

Ben Brown and not Smyly please

    agreed and agreed.

he walked off on his own, but we may not find out for a few days how this will impact the club.

Looked like a hamstring rather than a knee, not sure if that’s better or worse.

steele leaves the game with a hamstring or knee injury.  sigh.
