Cubs @ Braves: Lester vs Teheran (Game 92)

CHC (46-45): LHP Jon Lester (5-6, 4.25)
ATL (45-45): RHP Julio Teheran (4-4, 4.79)
First pitch: 6:35pmCST

Lester pitched against Pittsburgh his last time out. That’s all we remember…

Overall, Atlanta is 59-246 (.240) against him. Phillips is 8-24.

Teheran, who could be making his last start with Atlanta, won in Washington last Saturday (7 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 2 BB). He’s 6-0 with a 2.53 on the road this year. Maybe the Cubs should knock him around, then trade for him on the cheap. They are 8-45 (.176) against him. Schwarber is 3-3, and Rizzo has. HR.

The Cubs have shaved off a game of the Milwaukee’s lead in the division. Four and half more to go.

Lackey (5-9) and Newcomb (1-4) go tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Teheran is great on the road (6-0) and abysmal at Suntrust stadium: 1-6, 7.58 ERA, 13 HR allowed in 46.1 IP. Totally on board with getting him - he's a complete head case at Suntrust and has pitched well at Wrigley (and only 26 years old to boot).

AZ PHIL, RANK 'EM: Hey PHIL, with our best pitching prospect now gone, who are your faves still remaining in the system? The cupboard sure is bare in AAA. Thomas Hatch in your Top 5? Hudson? Julio Urias or the new guy Florencio Serrano? Thanks AZ PHIL!

E-MAN: Not including 2017 draft picks and 2017-18 IFA (yet) without having seen them throw in games (although there is definitely some quality talent there), the Cubs top dozen (or baker's dozen) SP prospects right now are Thomas Hatch, Jose Albertos, Oscar de la Cruz, Trevor Clifton, Adbert Alzolay, Jen-Ho Tseng, Duane Underwood Jr, Jose Paulino, Erling Moreno, Justin Steele, Bryan Hudson, Javier Assad, and Brailyn Marquez.

No question Dylan Cease was the clear #1 Cubs SP prospect prior to the Quintana trade, but if you ask three scouts to rank the remaining Cubs top SP prospects, you would very likely get three different answers. There isn't a lot of separation between the Top 5 or maybe even the Top 10 at this point, which is why the Cubs can trade any two of them and still have three or more left who could eventually be just as good or even better than the pitchers who are traded.

It may not be elite at this point, but the Cubs have quality starting pitching depth in their system right now, even moreso when you include the 2017 draft picks (Little, Lange, Abbott, Uelman, Thompson, Estrada, and Thomas) and the IFA signing (Serrano).

The problem is that none of the Cubs top SP prospects are MLB ready, although two pitchers drafted & signed over the past five years by the current Cubs regime are MLB starters right now (Zack Godley and Paul Blackburn). .

Thanks PHIL. Its too bad the Cubs could not have sold the D-Backs on another pitcher than Godley for Montero. But, at the time, they were desperate to fill a real need. Paul Blackburn netted Mike Montgomery so its going to be interesting to see how the two players will progress. Both of the acquired players the Cubs got figured prominently in their World Series drive, which at least is a great objective achieved out of the moves.

"It's too bad, etc." Teams may have different perspectives on a player. Godley was a high K-rate reliever in the Cub system. D'backs made him a starter immediately. They were right. If he had remained with the Cubs, would he be the starter that they need today? Probably not.

I don't know about that. Can't say I agree with any certainty. Godley was not with the team that long. And pitching coaches changed during his quick time with the organization. It took Carl Edwards a couple years for the coaches to say, "He's going to succeed more as a reliever". Its possible - barring control issues or other things - Godley could have been tried as a starter as well.

not really shocking given what they've been doing lately, but TB is tipping that they're buyers rather than sellers going into peak trading season. archer/cobb/etc are probably not on the table for anyone

Cubs are planning on promoting Dillon Maples to AAA, according to Patrick Mooney of CSN.

DJL: The problem with Fernando Rodriguez (September 2016 lat surgery) was that he was unable to throw two days in a row at EXST and also once he got to Iowa. He needed two or three days off between outings and obviously the Cubs weren't willing to wait any longer to see if he could pitch more frequently.

weather delay. ...one of those rain delays without rain that have been popular this year.

Hendricks threw 5 perfect innings for TN. So I assume it's Monty to the pen, Grimm to Iowa, and Lackey to his final few chances.

i hope lester spends the offseason doing 10,000 tosses to 1st and 2nd from the mound per day, 3 times a day, until spring training starts...at which point he can double it.

Wtf Javy?! One more K and you get the Golden Sombrero. His situational hitting is terrible and has not gotten any better during his time up in the Bigs.

j.lester just stole 2nd base...hahaha. man on 3rd, no one holding lester, tehran not checking him...lester took that. 1st of his career. also, freddy freeman has saved 3-4 runs tonight just with his D at 1st with various play (2 crazy diving picks)...crazy bad luck + great skill.

kyle "getting a bit more fit and a bit less fat" schwarber goes tumbling into the stands...still gets the out. swank. he seems unharmed, btw.

w.davis nearly blows it, but pulls it off. had to spend the last 10 minutes listening to the "tommy hawk chawp" so i'm not as thrilled with the win as i should be. MIL lost...cubs 4 games back.

Pelican righty Mike Rucker put up a nice pitching line last night: 8 innings, 2 hits, 10 strikeouts, everything else zero. 2016 11th rounder from BYU.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
