Cardinals @ Cubs: Martinez vs Arrieta (Game 95)

STL (46-49): RHP Carlos Martinez (6-8, 3.36)
CHC (49-45): RHP Jake Arrieta (9-7, 4.17)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Arrieta had a nice win on Saturday in Baltimore, giving up 1 ER in 6.2 innings. He's now 2-1 with a 1.86 in his last three starts and 1-1 with a 3.00 in two starts this season against St. Louis. For their careers, these Birds are 36-164 (.220) against Jake. Grichuk is 6-18 with a HR, and his old buddy Carpenter is now 1-29 after his HR in May.

Martinez had a no-decision in Pittsburgh his last time out (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). He’s 1-0 with a 1.93 in his two starts against the Cubs this season. Overall, they are 42-169 (.249). Zobrist is 5-15, Heyward is 7-20, and Rizzo is 8-30 with 3 HR. Bryant is 3-22 with 11 Ks, which might be a reason he sits, other than his sprained finger.

Starting the second half by acquiring an impact pitcher and sweeping two series on the road would be fine enough. But Milwaukee’s losing streak means the Cubs are only a game out of first. (The situation is even better if you look at total games and losses.) It looks like the Cubs, we might have to say for the last time, have finally turned things around.

Tomorrow is Lester (6-6) and Wainwright (11-5) at 3:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

carson kelly getting the start behind the plate today. he'll probably end up a hell of a trade chip for STL (yadi around 3 more seasons). STL still has a "sneaky" amount of talent that's on the cusp of (or is) MLB ready. them doing sub-par right now isn't something to sleep on. alex reyes (SP), luke weaver (SP), carson kelly (C), jack flaherty (SP)...paul dejong (SS/2nd), but he's already nearing 200 PA...magneuris sierra is a capable CF with speed don't sleep on them.

Yadi was in the initial reported line up as catcher and batting 5th. He sat on Wednesday and off day Thursday too, any idea what's up?

Randall Grichuk has a .916 in 134 PAs against the Cubs. By far the best against any other NL Central team with that number of AB's. I would walk that fucker and take my chances with someone else. He KILLS us.

everyone aside from baez (including arrieta) has a hit today. the real MVP of the game so far is carlos martinez's hair, though.

Well, I guess he had to wet himself. He was doing really well. Just picked the worst time.

Cubs clearly are taking the Tour De France tactic this year. Drafting off the leaders. Anytime they get within a game, they completely crap the bed.

Protecting a one-run lead against the Fards, any year, with any records, is always difficult as it is. But they should have scored more runs in this game.

8th inning so far... single, walk, walk, single, walk, single, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, single, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, single, double, walk, walk, single, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, walk, single, single, double, walk, single, walk, walk, single, walk, walk, single, single, double, walk something like 197 runs scored. 0 outs.

This reminds me of the Bartman game where the wheels come off so fast you have no idea what the score is anymore.

Double, Walk, Walk, Walk, Double, Walk, Single, Double, Walk, Single, Single 9 ER, 6H, 5BB, 0 Outs. Well, at least we saved a run on a DP.

ERA market correction today: Carl Jr 2.11 to 2.82 (really good to pretty good) Rondon 3.58 to 4.54 (good to not so good) Grimm 5.19 to 5.55 ("man, you suck" to "man, you really suck")

10BB in his last 7.0IP for CJ. Must be something about the Cardinals, at home. He walked 3 in 0.2IP against them in June. Not exactly closer material. When he is off, he can't seem to find the plate.

Brewers lose their 6th in a row, 6-1 to the Phils. Pirates up 7-3 in the 6th in Colorado. The rugby scrum that is the NL Central rolls on!

Thank goodness for the Eugene Emeralds. 3 doubles for Aramis Ademan. Cubs, Iowa, Tenn, MB and SB all lost last night.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
