Beeler returns as the 26th man in his second start of the season. He gave up 2 ER in 5 innings against the Cards on July 7th but had a no decision in a game the Cubs went on to win 5-3. He also pitched last July in Cinci when he gave up 4 ER in 5 innings for the loss. The Reds are 5-15 against him.

Cingrani returns from the DL (shoulder) to make his first start since June 9 of last year. (He had been working out of the bullpen.) The Cubs are 16-53 (.302) against him. Rizzo is 4-14 with a HR.

This line-up: oof.

Go Cubs!

Game 2 = Game 1. Fun day in Cincy! Edit: Stepped out for dinner -- just back now. What a game! What the hell?

Is this going to be remembered as the Dallas Beeler game? Ah, no.

Orioles released (after DFA last week) Wesley Wright. I thought I saw an extra feather in Theo's cap today.

man on 2nd..2 out...7th inning...tie game...teagarden + schwarb on the bench... hammel pinch hits. a'ite then...whatever.

Can someone tell me what happened with Castro's error? The Box says 2 runs were unearned? WTF did he do now?

i really wanna see that fan on the field footage based on how amazed the reds announcers are... it sounds like he actually made it out of the stadium without getting caught...and maybe took a selfie while doing it...and was extremely athletic...

Len/JD defended the sending of Fowler, mostly because you don't get many scoring chances vs Chapman as well as they still would have a runner in scoring position. It did take a good throw by Byrd and after the collision, Pena did a good job of holding on to the ball. All's well that ends well. Taylor Teagarden (Blind Squirrel) found a nut.

TEAGARDEN! hell yeah, cubs take the lead in the top 9th off f'n chapman.

This season is beginning to get some mojo.....two remarkable wins to split this series. A 4-3 trip -- could have hoped for better, given the competition, but -- wow! Gotta love Maddon -- after the Reds IBB to load 'em up for Beeler in the third, he pinch-hits Bryant, who comes through. Mojo, baby --- yeah!!!

...and, I know they're all young and MLB is brutal on most rookies, but the potential for Schwarber/Bryant/Rizzo/Soler to get on a combined hot streak is something to watch for every game. Their talent and flashes of performance have raised expectations beyond what is probably reasonable for now, but....maybe....

After watching Teagarden last night, I thought the Cubs' only chance to score was a wild pitch. Now THAT'S how you split a series. Holy cow!

By the way -- since the break, Russell is 7-19 with 4 walks. No pop, but he is getting on base. Nice to see.

Pick up a half game on the Pirates and Mets, lose a half game to the Giants -- much better than I had hoped after the 2nd inning.

Stoopid WSux, Damn Cardinals/Molina. But listening to whiny WSox fans on the radio, sublime. Just win Cubs.

The Cardinals did not get a competitive balance pick for 2016. That's good news. Royals and Mariners didn't get one either, despite being eligible.

And it begins! First major trade: Kazmir goes from A's to Astros for two prospects (both at high A ball).

"Former major leaguer and current MLB Network analyst Eric Byrnes will serve as the “strike zone umpire” for both games." i misread that as "former MLB Network analyst" and got stoked that they finally cut him loose. his aggro/hype take on everything can be draining unless you're into that kind of person.

A-Ram back to Pirates to help bite Cubs in the ass one more time before he rides off into Reverse Chalupa retirement.

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
