Cardinals @ Cubs: Wacha vs Quintana (Game 97)

STL (47-50): RHP Michael Wacha (7-3, 3.71)
CHC (50-46): LHP Jose Quintana (5-8, 4.20)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Quintana was outstanding in his debut for the Northsiders, throwing 7 innings of shutout ball and striking out 12 in Baltimore. These Cardinals are 7-22 (.304) against him. Fowler is 4-8.Wacha got lit up in his start against the Cubs at Wrigley in June (4.1 IP, 6 ER, 5 K, 4 BB). He’s 1-2 with a 5.13 in 6 games on the road this season. Overall, the Cubs are 32-94 (.340) against him. Rizzo is 15-31 with 3 HR, Bryant is 6-19 with a HR, and Happ is 2-3 (both HRs). Cool.

Hendricks (4-3) will be activated to go tomorrow against Gonzalez (4-9) and the White Sox at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Phillies leading the Brewers 6-2 in the top of the 6th... edit: Phils win 6-3... Cubs can tie for first place with a win tonight!

Quintana was superb last time out, and the Cards haven't seen him much. Wacha is bad on the road this year and the Cubs have pummeled him. Cubs can tie for 1st place with a win tonight. This game has fucking debacle written all over it.

I think the Cubs may be interested Chirinos. It's not worth paying for Lucroy to in theory catch 1 or 2 games a week. Chirinos is good for next year also if they feel Caratini may not even be the answer as a back-up. I wouldn't pay much for a back-up catcher.

I'm not so sure we should go after a RH hitting catcher, even Lucroy. It'd be nice to be able to trade for a LH hitting catcher to use to spell Contreras against an occasional RHSP that he doesn't match up well against. Contreras actually has decent splits, so in the end it may not matter that much as long as we get someone with some good game calling and defensive skills for the postseason. That's why it's even more upsetting that Montero had his meltdown, because despite his D being a big handicap, his bat and OBP were doing great for a guy who plays one out of five games.

FUCK YOU JOE! YOU KEEP PITCHING TO RANDALL GRICHUK. How many HRs does he need to hit in a row you stubborn manager?????

schwarber allegedly tied the game with a HR. it's allegedly because i don't think it's landed yet.

Q with no feel/command of his curveball all night. Pretty impressive that he's made it this far in the game basically relying on just his fastball.

contrerYES cubs lead by 2. unf.

cj edwards looks lost with sketchy control over his curve to pham...walks next batter... cj edwards tightly commands his curve in a nearly all-curve offering to fowler...strikeout 2017 edwards is a bit weird sometimes.

1st place! shared, but whatever. hell of a week (4.5 out of 1st last sunday, 5.5 out last saturday).

Isn't it about decision time on Brett Anderson? The Cubs pretty much have to make a move of some sort soon, no? With SPs dropping left and right, and everyone in the AL thinking they're still "in it".

TIM: Probably, but not necessarily.

Per the new CBA, a player who has spent at least 60 days on an MLB DL may have his Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment renewed once (an additional 30 days for a pitcher and an additional 21 days for a position player). The MLB Commissioner must approve a second Minor League Rehab Assignment if the player is not reinstated after the conclusion of the first one.

The only player I know of who had his rehab assignment renewed after the first one expired is Giants OF Jarrett Parker (broken clavicle), but there may be others.

Whether the Cubs would be able to convince the Commissioner that Brett Anderson should get another 30-day rehab assignment after the first one expires tomorrow (Tuesday) is open to question, since he appears to be fully recovered from his sick ERA "lower back strain."

And even if the MLB Commissioner were to grant a renewal (which I suspect is unlikely), Anderson could decline it and force the Cubs hand since he has multiple performance bonuses in his contract related to MLB Games Started.

So there is a chance that Anderson could get a rehab renewal...

Thanks PHIL. I am too lazy to look this up, but if he is not an answer for "long relief" and can't replace "Home Run Grimm", on the roster until September, its time for the team to say, "Was worth a shot..." and send him packing.

That was probably the biggest game for Q in at least 4 years -- Cubs-Cards, night game at Wrigley, first place on the line, Sunday Night Baseball. Sox finished 3 games out in 2012, but have had losing seasons the past 4 years. Just wondering -- how the hell of you have 4 straight losing seasons with Sale and Quintana in your rotation?

I'm back to being excited about each game! Now, if we could get Javy Baez to stop popping sunflower seeds while he's in the batter's box....

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.

What are the chances we can back off on gloating over other people’s misfortune?  One of the things I appreciate about the TCR community is that the remarks are more productive and add to how I like to follow the game.

Lately, however, I’m reading comments that are just mean.  If I were an MLB player, I would hate to get a back or finger injury and have someone write ‘hurrah!  I hope we never see him again!’  Especially when it is someone we were praising not long ago.  I’m not saying ‘don’t express how you feel’ but some comments lately seem downright mean spirited.  Stuff I expect from other communities but don’t often see here.  The TCR community has always spoken the truth but never with such a dark tone.

Just my two cents.  I hope Hendricks comes back and is the professor we all know. He can pitch for the Cubs as long as he wants in my book.

happ is back (and starting), mervis DH, tauchman gets RF.

morel 5th in the lineup.  hoerner continues to lead off, even vs a righty.

  • George Altman (view)

I don't care to see Hendricks or Smyly on the 26-man Roster the rest of the season. Both, stupid signings and option pick up by Jed.

  • crunch (view)

i know the cubs are paying the guys, but for the sake of the win/loss column this is some great news.

woo!  people getting injured!  kick ass!

    sportsball is cruel.

would have liked to keep cooper, but it looks like they're gonna go with wisdom if they have to pick a righty who's gonna K 1/3rd of his PA's.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Edwards would be my guess, or maybe they’re hoping Sanders or R Thompson can finally figure it out

  • Cubster (view)

So it’s Mervis, Wesn and Little for Cooper, Hendricks and Smyly. Count me in. Starting rotation for now: Taillon, Imanaga, Wicks, Assad and Brown-Wesn. Eventually Steele.

    Lineup

Hoerner, Happ, Bellinger, Busch, Morel, Swanson, Tauchman, Mervis, Amaya.

Another year AZPhil, and you have more to do than ever! Heck yeah! Great stuff from Rosario so far. What are your impressions of guys like Freilyn Silverio, Adan Sanchez, Jose Escobar, and Anderson Suriel? Particularly the first two, feel like I’m forgetting one.
