What a difference a week makes. The Cubs go 8-1 out of the gate and end up in first place, tied with the quickly fading Brewers.

Hendricks has been on the shelf for a month and a half with hand tendinitis. He last pitched on June 4--a 4 inning, 4 ER appearance against the Cardinals. He only threw 63 pitches in his last rehab start but had five perfect innings. The White Sox are 14-39 (.359) against him. Sanchez is 4-5, and Abreu is 3-6.

Gonzalez gave up 1 ER in 6 innings but lost to the Dodgers his last time out. He’s 1-6 with a 5.94 on this road this season. The Cubs are 12-55 (.218) against him. Baez is 2-6 with a HR.

Rodon (1-3) and Lackey (6-9) finish the North Side part of the series tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

I guess they were planing on using Monty tomorrow with Lackey's start - would have made sense today as well.

0-10 with RISP. I despise Angel Hernandez, but Contreras can't sit on those pitches with 2 outs in the 9th. Borderline at worst, probably both strikes.

I think Contreras was looking slider, got fooled, and took it out on the ump. All three strikes were fastballs he should have swung at, and two of them were pretty hit-able (by location, at least).

I hate playing teams on 9-game losing streaks. 10-game losing streak are rare. Worse, today's game ruined the billybucks dream season. Now 4-1. Sigh. I believe the Cubs left 7 on in the last 3 innings. A shame the wind didn't pause for Rizzo's ball. Only one game of data, but...who made Moncada the #1 prospect in baseball? He looked clumsy at 2nd and was helpless against any off-speed pitch.

I don't think Theo and his guy Jason McLeod did too well in their June drafts in Boston. Theo keeps busy on many fronts and the team usually ends up as a mysteriously potent amalgam. Of course, there are international signings also, and there was that recent year when the Cubs paid a lot of money including a fine and came away with Gleyber and Eloy. In any event, in five Junes in Boston (2005-2009) Theo and Jason netted Ellsbury, Buchholz, Lowrie, Reddick, Rizzo and not much else (although there are many other names familiar to fans of the Iowa team). Is that a good haul? I really don't know. It was hard to miss on Bryant (although the Astros managed it). I like Almora and love Schwarber and Happ. There won't be any more top-ten picks, so now what? Theo will have to figure something out.

I think you're forgetting the players that are now on the Red Sox' roster that he originally drafted (ok some have not won a WS yet). Here are the ones he drafted 2004-2009: Christian Vazquez, Travis Shaw, Jackie Bradley Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Justin Masterson, Dustin Pedroia, drafted June 2004. And, you know Jonathan Papelbon, right - 2005? So, yes, that's a "decent haul". Supplementing this was FA's Big Papi, and Lester who was drafted 2002.

Before I committed a word to paper, I tried to determine the years that McLeod might have been responsible for the Red Sox drafts. The best I could come up with was a five-year period beginning in 2005, based on this description by Baseball Reference: "He was the scouting director for the Boston Red Sox from 2005 to 2009." Scouting director may not be the guy who pulls the trigger on first- or second-round picks--the Cubs' scouting director today is Jaron Madison--but those did seem to be the years separating McLeod's two stints with the Padres. On further review, McLeod does seem to receive credit for the Pedroia draft, so I grant that his tenure should be given as 2004-2009. Your other draft-year assignments are all over the place. Bradley and Betts were drafted in 2011. Bogaerts was never in the draft. He was an international signing in 2009. Papelbon was drafted in 2003.

I don't know how you would evaluate any front office's drafting prowess without doing an extensive comparison to the other franchises. And then it would probably be by WAR vs. draft positions across a significant period, and you could only really know that 10 or so years later, if you are evaluating based on the value that players produced within their club-controlled years. This is even more true if you want to exclude high picks in the first round, which are likely to produce the most star players for any club.

I wasn't trying to rank the various scouting organizations. But the major leagues are full of talented pitchers that Epstein and McLeod didn't draft. Somebody is doing a better job than they are at recognizing amateur pitching talent. It seems glaring to me--which is why I keep repeating it here--that the Cubs don't have a pitcher on their roster that they drafted. (Dillon Maples may show up one of these days but he's a holdover from Hendry-Wilken.) When Lester was drafted in 2002, a guy named Mike Port was the Sox's GM. Epstein got the job in November of that year. So Epstein probably had nothing to do with the Sox acquiring Lester, and everything to do with their acquiring Schilling in 2003. That's still Theo's MO.

Theo Epstein, which was included in my original point, that has been scrutinized here, was Red Sox GM from November 25, 2002—October 31, 2005, and again 2006-2011. He drafted Papelbon. So you "grant that" too. My original point that he took a team with a foundation of rookies he drafted (Red Sox WS 2004, 2007, many say 2013 was his), in less than a 4-year period is remarkable and somewhat of an anomaly and stands as it is. You don't need an "extensive WAR vs. Draft Position" analysis to understand the basic point of the "team". McCleod reported to Theo anyway so yeah - there is some partnering there on who pulls the trigger. Theo would be the one holding the bag as the GM. Make your own conclusion.

Koji: Has been terrible in July, but he is 42. For the month: .320 .393 .440 .833 against An .833 ops. Between he and Grimm, it's no wonder Theo is tied to every reliever available. By my count - in 7.2 innings in July, 10 hits 4 runs, and several meatballs thrown.

I honestly don't get how guys get paid to write stuff like that... Seriously, if you put the microscope on any team's bullpen in a 10 game span that collectively is their worst performance, that's what you'll see from just about any team. Especially when you're about 100 games in and the bullpen is taxed because the starters have only managed to complete 7 innings in their starts probably only about a dozen times, of course the bullpen is taxed and they will hit a lull around this point in the season. Oh I know why they get paid to write that crap, because negativity = internet clicks = sold advertising. $$$

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
