Mariners @ Cubs: Hernandez vs Matusz (Game 104)

Pfffft. SEA (52-50): RHP Felix Hernandez (5-4, 3.45) CHC (62-41): LHP Brian Matusz (0-0, 12.00) First pitch: 7:08pmCST Hendricks was supposed to go tonight, but Maddon is implementing his random six-man rotation strategy. After getting no-hit for six innings by the ball boy and losing a tough game yesterday—what’s not to love about basically conceding a home game in July to a .500 team? Let the record show that, unless this works, I’m against it. Matusz signed with the Cubs in June, after being cut by the Braves—the Braves! He last pitched in the majors on May 17 with the Orioles, when he gave up 4 ER in 1.2 innings against Seattle—Seattle! He had a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings (and two starts) with Iowa. The Mariners are 26-84 (.310) against him--.310! Cano is 12-35 and Cruz is 7-12 both with 2 HR against him. Hernandez has been unking-like of late, despite winning in Pittsburgh in his last outing (6 IP, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 BB). He has allowed 9 ER and 19 hits in 12.2 innings in his two starts since coming back from the DL with a calf strain. The Cubs are 13-82 (.159) against him. Fowler is 4-14. Conley (7-5, 3.38) and the Marlins are in town against Hendricks (9-7, 2.39) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST. Go Cubs!

Andrew Miller was reportedly traded to Cleveland. It'll be interesting how big the prospect haul is vs. Chapman.

Although the Brewers almost certainly would want Willson Contreras, based on the players the Brewers were supposed to get back from the Indians for Jonathan Lucroy, a comparable offer from the Cubs would be something like RHRP Carl Edwards Jr, 3B Jeimer Candelario, C Victor Caratini, and OF Mark Zagunis. Of course the Brewers probably would prefer not to trade Lucroy to a division rival, so the Cubs probably can't get Lucroy.

Don't really get the timing of the Matusz thing, given the off day Thursday, unless Joe really thinks Hendricks needs another day. Hoping for a 10-6 win today -- it's been a while since KB and Rizz HR'd in the same game.

Andrew Cashner vs StL this afternoon. Had a 3-0 lead, now 3-2. He's clean shaven now as the Fish have a no facial hair policy and he knuckled under (so to speak).

looks like the mets just lost SS a.cabrera. he tweaked his knee really badly on a mis-step coming around 3rd base. they just put j.reyes on the DL pre-game with an oblique injury. k.johnson is probably gonna get a chance to raise his market value at 3rd/2nd.

cards add z.duke to their pen for c.tilson (AAA CF/LF) tilson isn't a superstar, but he can play CF, has above-average speed, is a lefty, and projects as a 4th OF'r bench type at worst and a good-enough starting CF (jon jay type) if things go as expected. duke is under contract for 5.5m next season.

m.kemp traded to...the braves? kemp's got 3 years left and the dodgers, padres, and braves are all paying into his contract...the braves are on the line for roughly $15-16m/yr.

Marlins blow 4-2 lead in the 8th...then walk off W in the 9th!!! Chance to up the lead to 7.5 tonight.

With the Cards loss, Feels like playing with house money tonight with Matusz - win would be gravy but hopefully helps down the road regardless of outcome. Would have been okay resting Russell with Javy but with Coughlan starting figure Javy will be coming it at some point anyway. Glad to see Contreras catching.

AZ PHIL: If you had to trade Candelario or GTorres, which would be the better prospect since you've been watching both of them for a couple years?

Dan Haren on twitter. "The trading deadline doesn't seem the same without me being every team's fallback option." (then proceeds to show about 8 tweets that basically say "Haren sucks" hopefully, the trading deadline 2016 will be kinder to the Cubs.

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat Told that Chapman didn't like 4 out save situations, #Cubs Maddon said "I didn't know that" Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat Why start Matusz tonight? There were contractual obligations the #Cubs had to honor

Tommy LaStella was sent to Iowa three days ago but has not appeared in those three games that Iowa has played. I thought they wanted to him to get a lot of at bats. Did he quit?

it took about 26 pitches before i've had about enough of b.matusz loading the bases after a 2-run homer isn't neat. ...sweet, he gets out of it.

So, we forfeit a home game AND get burn out the bullpen? So the starters can get an extra a day off? With an off day on Thursday? Very bizarre. Matusz is a confirmed lousy MLB pitcher, and Seattle hits a lot of HRs -- not too hard to see this coming. The starters better pitch 5 consecutive shutouts to make up for this.

Good to see those 522 ERRORS again. So WHAT did the scouts see about Matusz suckage they thought they could fix?? I was reading Oriole blogs today and they HATE him. They are getting a great laugh out of this "start". Theo: "Hmmm...who should we pitch tonight, a potential Cy Young candidate, or a guy who hasn't started since 2012 and was shellacked the last two years out of the pen? I guess the 2nd guy." Theo: "Hmmm...who should we pitch tonight, a potential Ccandidate, or a guy who hasn't started since 2012 and was shellacked the last two years out of the pen? I guess the 2nd guy."

OK, now I am totally confused -- why the hell would you take out Matusz?? Leave him out there to eat some innings. Man, Theo really screwed the fans who bought tickets to tonight's game.

Hope the starters enjoyed their rest and are good to go for the last 2 months -- they cannot run this clown out there again. He is 2012-2014 vintage Cubs.

SO GLAD I sold mine for tonight. This team will be 4 or 5 games under .500 for July. They had a nice start after the ASG - but certainly there are some holes on this team. I thought after the Friday thrashing that they might have kick-started the April-May version. But, its baseball. And, again, the Cubs do not match up well with the Fish. - sigh -

SO GLAD I sold mine for tonight. ----- Odd. I remember sitting with you on a game vs Colorado (was that 2008?) where the Cubs won 9-8. This was the 2016 version of that game. It was awesome being there tonight. Wood, Contreras, Russell, Lester and even Heyward...and Maddon managed his butt off tonight.

...and the booing of Jason Heyward begins. This could be a very ugly few months for him. He may wind up opting out just to get out of Chicago.

very few people 'earn' their multi-year deal value...they're often overpaid...but heyward doing his usual 'slightly above average' job with his bat the past few seasons gives him a rather small room for good/bad. he's been rather bleh at the plate very consistently all season without managing to be useless even if he's not looking anything like a guy on a 23-25m a year (depending on opt out) multi-year contract.

t.wood with an amazing catch in LF going into the ivy/brick after getting a slow break on a smack to the wall. pitchers playing LF...mastering the ivy...a'ite then.

1 out, man on 3rd, bottom 12th...and jon lester strolls to the plate to pinch hit.

OMFG! LESTER GETS THE BUNT DOWN WITH 2 STRIKES AND HEYWARD IS ALL "ZOOM" N SHIT AND THE CUBS WON AND HELL YEAH.

Oh. My. God. That 9th inning -- OF throws to 3rd so Addy gets to 2nd, Wilson beats the DP by an eyelash, then a WP with 2 strikes (I actually called that -- my son can verify). Then, the winning play. I am still shaking. Hopefully, this gets Heyward's karma going in the right direction -- that was a great swing he put on the 0-2 pitch.

The question on why they didn't leave Matsucks in the game longer so he could eat innings...answered. Just another day in the land of the Great Maddonnini.

i like maddon and all, but that was a bigass chunk of luck coming from a lot of directions...from t.wood's catch in LF after getting a sketchy break (well, he's a pitcher so...yeah) to the SEA brainfarts in the 9th. it still looks like a win at the end of the day. that was a hell of a fun game. i can deal with a 1-man failure over a full-team failure...especially when that failure works it's way into a win.

I assume Matusz gets sent back down (or DFA'd) today -- but, I think they have to wait to bring Grimm back up (?). They could really use another arm in the pen tonight.

The Mets get Bruce for Nimmo and two others. The Cubs are said to be marginally interested in Reddick and Hill.

I would like to be on the record as opposing this whole other playoff teams improving themselves with trades thing. Doesn't seem like it should be allowed.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
