Marlins @ Cubs: Fernandez vs Hammel (Game 106)

Do over! MIA (57-49): RHP Jose Fernandez (12-5, 2.79) CHC (64-41): RHP Jason Hammel (10-5, 3.23) First pitch: 7:05pmCST Hammel beat the White Sox on Tuesday (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). In his three starts since the All-star Break, he’s 3-0 with a 2.00. In 9 starts (and 11 appearances) against the Marlins, he’s 2-5 with a 3.97. They are 37-138 (.268) against him. Stanton is 7-18 with a (probably very long) HR. Hammel was on the mound when Fernandez beat the Cubs in Miami on June 26 (7 IP, 1 ER, 13 K!, 3 BB). Fernandez lost to the Cardinals in his last outing (5 IP, 5 ER 9 K, 2 BB). He went 2-2 with a very mortal 4.35 in July. The Cubs are 6-39 (.154) against him. Heyward is 4-10. The over-under on Cubs strikeouts is 27. Koehler (8-8, 4.18) versus Lackey (8-7, 3.69) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to close out the set. Go Cubs!

Hey Dr. H, any thoughts on all the thumb ligament tears that seem to be occurring the last year or two?

It's actually a pretty common injury in athletics that involve throwing/catching. Historically nicknamed Gamekeepers thumb. That name came from hunting birds and when preparing the bird for the dinner meal the force to twist the neck would injure the thumb ulnar collateral ligament. If the ligament if fully torn it can get trapped under an adjacent band which blocks it from healing properly. If that doesn't happen it can heal without surgery. If the ligament doesn't heal tightly, it can affect pinch between the thumb and fingers which obviously would be a problem for grabbing a bat or throwing a ball.

He was sailing too for the most part after a rough 1st inning. Guess Madden just wanted to go the Strop/Rondon/Chapman traditional route. I'm not completely opposed to that but would have rather let Hammel go at least one more inning since he's not someone who seems to be pushing a huge amount of innings pitched this year and I'd rather save bullpen bullets. That said you should expect those three bullpen guys to hold the lead better and Strop didn't today. Rondon didn't look super sharp either but thank goodness Contreras throwing Gordon out yesterday made him take a bigger lead today and Rondon showed a really nice pick off move.

I like Joe. I really do. But if you are going to lift a pitcher who may have had is best outing of the year going for a ph, why MUST you always go to the worst hitter on the team (even if he is a lefty)??? Post-game he gave his usual, "that's that NL thing. If it was an AL game, Hammel is still pitching." Why this smart man keeps trotting out Montero in big spots, only to fail, is very Dusty-like.

This is a little bit of an auto-response, E-Man, but you're overlooking the psychological component of Maddon's job. These are proud professionals, not chess pieces. Montero is sitting there thinking, Why is the pitcher batting, and I'm sitting here? It may mean more to Montero than another inning means to Hammel. Maddon needs everyone's buy-in. Besides, Strop is supposed to be good, and often is (though not often enough for my taste).

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.

Neris reminds me of Don “Full Pack” Stanhouse.

Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.

They certainly could be coupled. It could also be the case that a team needs good players at the heart of the team and if they are not coming from one source (development) they have to be sought out elsewhere. I don't see the evidence needed to infer the cause.
