Cubs @ A’s: Arrieta vs Gray (Game 109)
Oh, hey there five-game winning streak.
CHC (67-41): RHP Jake Arrieta (12-5, 2.75)
OAK (48-60): RHP Sonny Gray (5-10, 5.84)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST
Arrieta pitched well enough to win (7 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) but took the loss to Seattle on Friday. He ended up winless in July, going 0-3 with a 4.88 ERA. His ERA has gone up by at least 1.00 each month all season. The A’s are 11-55 (.200) against him. Butler is 3-7.
Gray has had a couple of decent months (April and June), but he’s also had a couple of dreadful ones (May and July). He went 2-4 with a 7.79 in July, including a drubbing in Cleveland—Hello, Cleveland!—in which he gave up 7 ERs in 3.1 innings. He’s been equally bad at home and on the road, and the former top-of-the-rotation guy is probably just waiting for the end of what is mostly a lost year. Fowler is 2-4 against him.
Our Man Hendricks (10-7, 2.22) versus the lefty Manaea (3-6, 4.68) tomorrow at 3:05pmCST to end the series.
Go Cubs!
