Haren won against the Brewers on Tuesday (5.1 IP, 3 ER). He’s 1-0 with a 5.23 so far as a Cub. The Sox are 19-84 (.226) against him. Cabrera is 5-16, LaRoche is 3-7, and Abreu is 2-3 with a HR.

Sale beat the Angels his last time out (7.1 IP, 2 ER). He’s had 5 games so far this season where he’s given up 5 ER or more, including the time before last when the Rays tagged him for 7 in 5.1 innings. He beat Lester at Wrigley in July (7 IP, 1 ER). The Cubs are 6-29 (.207) against him. Rizzo is 2-3.

After the game, we’ll take the charter from Midway to O’Hare--yay, climate!--and have a day off before the Tigers come to town: Sanchez vs. Hammel on Tuesday and Norris vs. Lester on Wednesday.

Go Cubs!

Bonifacio DFA'd by WSux. He was hitting .167/.198/.192. His one shining moment in 2015 was when he single handedly won the game on Friday, 7-10. HBP, Stolen Base, Sac bunt, Sac Fly. 1-0 Cub loss. Hendricks pitches 7 shutout innings. Rondon got the loss.

Headed to see the Cubs stars of the day after tomorrow at a Myrtle Beach Pelicans game tonight.

it's nice to outright own the house so we can sell and leave. in the meantime, the very unreasonable mean dude who's the president shouldn't be starting LLCs out of his house since 1- it's in the HOA charter you can't have a business out of your house 2- he's taking money for his self-proclaimed-on-webpage "alternative investment" venture that the state of NC was told about last week. all we wanted was to put this off until late-sept/early-oct so we could safely find the plants a new home ($1000s of dollars in perennials/shrubs/bulbs/etc). he told us to have it done by august 18th (2 weeks) or he'll sue us via the HOA. keep in mind there was no warning before this. also keep in mind we were willing to comply no matter how crappy and we kinda saw it coming when they changed the HOA covenant this past spring. it's worth mentioning that we've been here over a decade. anyway, yes...the guy who was a jerk is getting trolled softly...so softly. the rest of the HOA can be left alone to run their compound of homogenized sleeping caves in peace. hell, all our immediate neighbors and the 2 HOA members near us are sad to see the garden going, but evidently HOA president dude has been enjoying enforcing what they are having regrets signing off on...sigh. RIP Front Yard - http://i.imgur.com/gtdCW3f.jpg (all of this is maintained, not just growing wild...and there's paths within it) go cubs.

we were planning on moving by next spring and tearing out a huge chunk of the garden this fall anyway. we just didn't appreciate the HOA president pushing weight on us or having to remove all of it. it's just a really bad time to be moving plants this time of year. luckily, we got new homes for the more valuable/rare stuff and hopefully they'll survive the transplant shock.

a loss...i don't know what to do with this. i don't know how to feel about this. what is this? i dunno... i'm gonna go lock myself in the bedroom until i figure out these new feelings.

Although they were never in this game...still, they had the tying run up to plate in the 9th.

Rosenthal on Utley...
The Cubs remain in the mix for Utley -- they attempted to trade for him in July when he was still on the disabled list, sources say. But they apparently are not Utley’s first choice, and club officials might not want to disrupt a team that has won 15 of its past 16 games. Chris Coghlan -- who, like Utley, is a left-handed hitter -- currently is getting the majority of playing time at second base, and his OPS against right-handed pitching is .800.

Cards lose to Mia 6-4. SF plays in Stl tomorrow. Pirates won big over Mets. Mets botched a sure double play to open the floodgates in the 7th. Snakes play in Pitt tomorrow, then 4 games vs Giants also in Pitt. SF with Madbum leading Nats again. Mad Bum's next outing will be vs Pitt (although Stl won't see him until they play in SF). Pirates have 6 vs Cubs and Stl in Sept. Cards have 6 vs SF in Aug; 6 vs Pitt and Cubs in Sept; Everyone gets a lot of Brewers in Sept. Pirates are now 5 behind the Cards. It would be an odd turn of events if the Cubs-Cardinals are the wild card teams. Long way to go before the daydreaming concludes...A tough west coast trip after next week. The day off tomorrow seems well timed but they lose two Sept. days off with rescheduled games vs Indians/Royals.

My focus on SF -- if we stay ahead of them, we're in the playoffs. Big week ahead -- SF with 3 in STL and 4 in PIT. Nice if Cubs can pick up a few games next week before heading west.

i've given up on catching STL...others may not be. it would be nice not to burn an ace in a WC game, but i have very little faith they can catch STL because of how STL has been steamrolling through teams all season. as much fun as it would be to finish 1st in the WC, even a win at home that would be exciting as hell for fans is ultimately just an "entry ticket" to the playoffs as we're used to it. i means a lot, but at the same time it means so little.

The one thing Schwarb can't do (yet) is PH -- currently 0-6 as a PH. Hopefully, his PH opportunities will be few and far between.

I realize I'm not objective, but...it seems to me the home field advantage in baseball is becoming similar to the NBA -- umps make close calls in favor of the home team to get positive feedback from the fans. The strike 3 call on Soler was close (but wrong), but the out call on Russell in the 9th was horrible-- it seemed like the ump wanted to give a big flourish to send the crowd home happy.

but the out call on Russell in the 9th was horrible --- Is there a site where they track overturned calls? I'm quite surprised as to how many baseline calls the umps get wrong. Of course, to challenge, the call has to be close. The Russell call was particularly awful. I thought that baseline calls was their strong suit, historically, but not after this season. Balls and strikes were always ump specific. Boundary calls were always iffy because of the distance.

It seems in that case he was almost just excited about the play. It was a nice fielding gem and his human nature took over, and yeah, maybe even the crowd plays a role there since it's the home team and he just gets caught up. In other words, I don't think he did it on purpose. Just got caught up in the excitement of the play. I think what's really gone to hell has been ball and strikes calling. It seems like no matter who is pitching, for the most part if it is anywhere near the strike zone it gets called a strike. I think I'm ready for robo umpiring when it comes to balls and strikes.

Umps getting excited about calls one way or the other shows a complete lack of professionalism, IMO. What possible reason could there be to have a different call for the third strike than the first? It's just a way of showing up the hitter. Umps are supposed to be completely unbiased, yet they practically hump the air in excitement when they call guys out on strike three.

Giants lose to Stl 2-1 on a botched double play throw past first by Crawford in the bottom of the 8th. Cardinals with horseshoe but may have lost Hayward with a tight hamstring (he left the game in the 2nd). Grichuk on DL with right elbow ligament strain. Buck's lose 4-1 to Diamonbacks beating G. Cole. Pitt 69-47, +22 Cubs 67-49, +18 SF 64-54, +10 2 games back of Pit, SF 4 games back of Cubs

So guess is Lester is throwing to 1st base today off the mound and is looking good doing it so yay?! Doesn't mean mental stuff won't come into play during a game but can't say they aren't working on it. Also it'll be really interesting tonight to see how Hammel looks after being pissed about getting yanked early twice, especially if he struggles a bit in the 4th or 5th inning. I supported yanking him the 1st time but not the 2nd and hope it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass long term.

Simple theory: Building Hammel back up after his leg strain/injury. Joe and Bosio have him on a pitch count or some visual cue. When they see something they don't like they pull him. Conspiracy theory: Joe and Bosio have been working with Hammel on something he is not following through on (I have no idea of the specifics...throwing too many or not enough breaking balls, not varying each time through the order),they have tried good cop techniques (chat with him at end of innings, between starts) and have not been effective. Last two times getting pulled have been bad cop technique (you don't want to do it our way you can come and sit on the bench).

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

  • crunch (view)

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
