Brewers @ Cubs: Anderson vs Hammel (Game 118; second of two)

Thank you, sirs. May we have another?MIL (52-65): RHP Chase Anderson (7-10, 4.93)
CHC (74-43): RHP Jason Hammel (12-5, 2.90)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hammel is on a roll, winning his last five starts. He threw seven scoreless against the Angels on Wednesday. The chips are working! He’s 1-1 with a 4.91 in his two starts against Milwaukee this year. Overall, they are 25-98 (.255) against him. Braun is 9-25 with 3 “HRs.”

Anderson won against Atlanta his last time out (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB). He’s 1-6 with a 5.96 ERA on the road this year. He beat the Cubs in Milwaukee in May, giving up 2 ER and falling one out short of a complete game. The Cubs are 4-38 (.105) against him—really? Zobrist is 1-3, and Heyward has a HR—really?

Nelson (6-12, 4.07) versus Lester (12-4, 2.93) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

"what was better, the tarp catch or the ledge catch?" "what?" "anthony rizzo...the 2016 NL MVP from the world series champion cubs." "oh, yeah...they were both awesome, but we really need to take shelter because the apocalypse is literally raining death upon the land." "yeah, 2017 sucks."

Who even goes down to get back to 25 if Cahill stays? He was great today. Maybe they're cautious and put Lackey on the DL, although it doesn't seem like that will happen. Someone that doesn't deserve to go down will have to go down.

Theo's crew is supposedly data-driven: Smith was brought in to be a righty specialist, as his "funk" would get lots of ground ball outs vs. RH batters. So far this year, in 95 PA (decent sample size), RH batters are slashing .294/.371 against his funk. It. Doesn't. Work.

Out of the three catchers, Contreras seems the most at ease (least uncomfortable?) in catching Chapman.

Speaking of which, Chapman's wild inning was predictable based on how he was throwing in the bullpen last night. If he doesn't like being called in to get 4 outs, I wander how he feels about pitching in both ends of a double header. Joe's definitely working him like a 2-month rental.

Grimm now with 15 straight scoreless appearances: 12.1 IP, 5 H, 4BB, 15K. His ERA has dropped from 6.08 to 4.15. And, when you send him to the minors, he actually goes and plays there. More Grimm, less (preferably zero) Joe Smith, please.

He's supposed to decide today. Joe's comments yesterday--haven't talked about it, haven't heard anything--make it seem unlikely that it'll be with the Cubs. Sounds like Boston.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
