Brewers @ Cubs: Nelson vs Lester (Game 119)

All in all, it’s just another catch on the wall.MIL (52-66): RHP Jimmy Nelson (6-12, 4.07)
CHC (75-43): LHP Jon Lester (12-4, 2.93)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Lester had a no-decision against the Cardinals on Thursday (6 IP, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB). He had a no-decision in Milwaukee last month, giving up 4 ER in as many innings in a game the Cubs would go on to win 6-5. The Brewers are 12-37 (.324) against him, for their careers. Perez is 2-4.

Nelson has lost his last five starts, including his last one against the Reds (5 IP, 3 ER, 7 K, 3 BB). He’s 0-2 with a 1.53 in his three starts against the Cubs this year. Overall, they are 35-144 (.243) against him. Soler is 6-17 with a HR.

Davies (9-5, 3.80) versus Arrieta (14-5, 2.55) to close out the set tomorrow at 1:20pmCST before we head out west.

Go Cubs!

Maddon said during a radio interview earlier today that La Stella is about ready to report to AA Tenn. So that's good.

"about ready" i wouldn't be surprised to see him not report until next monday in jackson...then back home for the series there before reporting back to the big league club. bet he wont even take the bus from jackson to iowa, too. also, he probably kicks puppies. well that's nice of him. hopefully he'll net the cubs a player worth a damn in the off-season.

very good. assuming he's not up until september that should give him a few series to play in.

Strasburg gives up 9ER in 1.2IP in Colorado -- hey, guys, who wants to pitch this weekend?

Damn, a busy Cubbie transaction day: now Coghlan to the DL for a rib contusion after colliiding with Russell in game one yesterday. Patton called up to the bullpen. Maybe TLS gets a call up before Sept.

7 batters in...1 out...32 pitches...5 cubs runs...and even heyward got a hit (double)

lastella got a single AB (and hit a single), then exited the game after the 4th before his next AB. a'ite then.

another "watch the guy steal 3rd while lester stands on the mound watching" SB off lester...it doesn't stop looking like weird baseball.

Wait...Heyward had a double? Really?? was it a soft grounder that got missed? Was it in the air?

Nice bounce back outing by Carl Jr. The one guy that reached on a weak ground ball single should have been rung up on a called third strike. Still keeping up ridiculous non-contact rate on fastballs in the strike zone

Yes! The billybucks season record improves to 2-2. Now riding a 2-game win streak. And, what may be a first in billybucks Cub history -- a no-drama win. Odd. I have never seen anyone hit a baseball harder than Soler did. My goodness!

And he gave up one run and the Cubs won the game. His ERA is 2.86. He's given up 49 runs in 24 starts. He's allowed 19 SBs this season. For comparison's sake, Syndergaard has allowed 40. #haveasnickers

yeah, what lester is doing is absolutely not noteworthy and not unique at all. hell, with only 19 SB why have d.ross around? let's get a bat-only catcher and increase those cubs runs! the numbers totally check out. i mean, 19 SB...c'mon, the running game is solved and there's nothing to see here. letting guys get huge leads and watching them take bases from the mound while holding the ball is as normal as a HR or a strikeout. nothing noteworthy here...just ordinary baseball same as you'll see with 1000s of other starters for decades and centuries of the game. #notusingthatphrasecorrectly

if runner = on base and pitcher = j.lester then lead = large if lead = large then probability of extra base on following hit > average of mean okay, enough of that silliness. look, if the cubs scored 0 runs last night...something lester has almost no control over...then lester loses last night's game nearly solely because of how he handled the runner that scored. this isn't a positive trait, nor does him allowing it to happen allow other positive opportunities to happen. beyond all that, it is remarkable because it is VERY uncommon in the history of the game.

I like it when Lester's yips is the issue of the day here ... generally means the Cubs are rolling

back before i knew how bad lester's yips would be, i did want a better catcher. i made comments after lester got signed about his lack of control of the running game, but i had no idea it was an immovable force that couldn't be addressed. at this point (and for a while) i now understand that having a d.ross type is a necessity that can't be avoided. any cheapening of the quality/reputation of arm behind the plate would lead to lester losing control of the running game should the opposing team choose to utilize an aggressive running game. i see no end in sight for this being a necessity. lester pretty much only feels comfortable underhand throwing to 1st at the expense of not making a double play or letting a runner take 3rd from 2nd. once a runner is on base it's up to others on the field (especially the catcher) because lester's only ability to control the running game once they're on base is to deliver the ball quickly to the plate. this is before we get into the insane leads many runners take off lester even if they have no intention on stealing.

Contreras seems to be excellent at controlling the running game (picked off 1 yesterday and almost had a 2nd) and also has a good bat so if he catches Lester you really won't be sacrificing anything moving forward. I wish Lester could figure out it and it is a problem but the Cubs are in a pretty good position to deal with it moving forward and Lester is a good enough pitcher to handle it the vast majority of the time.

he's been better than his minor league reports, which gave a lot of props to his arm, but average reports outside of that. it would be wonderful if he could develop the skills and reputation to catch lester...which wouldn't be that insane of a leap given what he's shown.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
