Reds @ Cubs: Feldman vs Lester (Game 120)

CIN (50-71): RHP Scott Feldman (7-7, 4.43)
CHC (63-56): LHP Jon Lester (8-7, 3.99)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

I don't know if Elias has weighed in, but I'm guessing that last night's game was the first in history to start off with a home-team no-out grand slam and end on a wild pitch walk-off to break a tie. To invoke crunch: neat. Also, hats off to Maddon for remembering that sometimes you need to take one for the team and get tossed.Lester takes the mound for the series finale. He gave up 3 ER in 6 innings in Arizona and took the loss on Saturday. He’s 1-0 with a 6.17 in his two starts against the Reds this season. Overall, they are 39-154 (.253) against him. Hamilton is 7-16 with 2 HR.

Feldman had a no-decision in Milwaukee his last time out (4 IP, 3 ER, 6 K, 1 BB). He’s 1-1 with a 4.66 in two starts against the Cubs this season. These Cubs are 15-64 (.234) against him. Avila is 3-6 with a HR.

It’s Arrieta (12-8) against Happ (6-8) and the Blue Jays tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

BARF.

Disaster 2-2 at home against awful team is not OK.

Lester continuing his snake bitten season - too bad Cubs didn't take advantage of his last two starts before this stinker.

I watched this inning later and was surprised how many bloop hits there were. Plus, almost all the runs came after two out, with a borderline strike-three that would have ended the inning without much damage. All very flukey. Tough-luck game until Maddon put Grimm in. From there, you deserve what you get.

*facepalm* 1.2ip and done.

Looks like the Eddie Butler show may be coming back to Wrigley - I think I just threw up a bit in my mouth.

If this team makes the Playoffs, and I am still not convinced they will from May, they will have to tighten so many areas. Its plugging one leak, before another springs. Situational hitting, bullpen, in deep holes early, the closer, strikeouts, defense, inability to beat last place clubs consistently.

I really had no expectations this year (aside from running away from the division and getting a playoff spot)...but to have such a fundamentally sound team play such an enjoyable brand of baseball, to this garbage this year is just not enjoyable to me as a fan. Even yesterday's "Uplifting" win, was only uplifting because the bullpen blew a 5 run lead in a period of two outs.

OK -- uplifting win last night! Now, if Lester can just....never mind. Looked to me like Jon up and quit.

WTF.

Per ESPN, Lester is the only pitcher in last 30 years to allow 9 runs in one inning twice in a season.

I recall thinking "seven runs will not win this game" but at 9, I was doubtful.

Reading the progression of this message board is kinda hilarious.  Joyous game to watch, which it was the once-every-three-months game I picked to do a recap on...

cubs HRs vs cubs hitters diving head-first into 1st base...which will be more by the end of the game

WTF.

Both Duensing and Davis threw just 10 pitches yesterday - believe both should be available today.

Ervin was hitting .256 with 7HR at AAA before getting called up. Cubs have turned him into Babe effing Ruth.

Wow, that was an absolutely horrible pitch by Grimm for the homer. Missed the spot by a foot, left it right up in the zone.

When an infield pop out goes to the warning track, you know it is an interesting day at Wrigley.

Of course Wilson walks the first batter. Of course. Second verse, same as the first.

I assume Strop had an arm amputated earlier today. Grimm and Wilson? Joe is a sadist of the worst fashion.

Oh God, Rondon. I think this is just a ploy by Joe to shake a trade for more relievers out of Jedstein. Grimm, Wilson, Rondon: the holy trinity of suck.

"Epstein problem" I'm sure there's a math formula that Theo uses, but sometimes you just look at a guy, look at his mechanics, and then you don't go near Justin Grimm. Here's a formula: don't touch a guy that can't throw a fastball from the same arm slot twice.

Not coincidentally, the 3 lead off walks by our relievers each scored. Good educational tape for high school pitchers.

See if I nail this before we see Joe: "I thought Grimmer was gonna do it there - he's been throwing the ball really well. It just didn't play out."

Felt the mojo turn when KB lined out to the pitcher for a DP with the go-ahead run on 2nd. Also, when I saw Grimm come in and begin the parade of walks. Cubs need to stop winning series openers by 10+ runs. Those series always end in disappointment.

Cubs began the week having played 4 fewer games than the Brewers. They played 2 extra games Mon & Thursday. Split 'em, so nothing gained or lost, although it always feels like a bad loss when you don't win a series at home vs. the Reds. The Tuesday bad-luck loss really stings.

Are there any reasonable alternatives in AA or AAA for the bullpen that won't burn a last option prior to September? Man, Dylan Fucking Cease...

Cubs have lost 4 of last 7 to Reds, and 12 of last 21 at home overall. Cubs were mediocre against good teams last year, but absolutely dominated bad teams and dominated at home

Patrick Mooney‏ @CSNMooney Jon Lester left Wrigley Field and is scheduled to meet with Dr. Gryzlo in downtown Chicago bleh. looks like montgomery will get another rotation shot.

Joe said he was trying to avoid using Strop and thus used Grimm in that situation. My guess for the reason was because the bottom of the order was coming up, but that Ervin guy looked like a stud in the series. I was at the game and I knew something wasn't right with Lester after pitch #1. 90 MPH fastball just didn't seem right. Hope he is okay.

@Eric S Joe actually said he wanted to avoid Strop this game. Idk why, he should have been available. Minor injury? Likes matchups for him in TOR series? Otherwise, idk. Prob doesn't affect game anyways because you have to use 1 of Grimm/Wilson anyways. Duensing against Votto. Prob expect Lester to be placed on DL, Pena called up tomorrow. Or maybe Maples. With Uehara on the DL, it suddenly feels like Joe can't trust many of his relievers when the bullpen has been a strength for most of the season.

Someone should start a petition on change.org to ban all Justins from the Cubs bullpen.

Funny that last week I believe I posted something in which I saw a something like a 12-10 game coming, but in the Lackey vs. Bailey matchup. 13-10 today, but wrong game, lol.

I hear Happ wants to get into the home run derby next year with Grimm as his pitcher. Only problem is that walks don't count. So he may go with Lackey instead.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
