Cubs @ Padres: Lester vs Jackson (Game 124)

Jackson gets another chance to finally help the Cubs--unless he gets lost on his way to the park.CHC (78-45): LHP Jon Lester (13-4, 2.86)
SD (53-71): RHP Edwin Jackson (3-3, 5.36)
First pitch: 9:10pmCST

Lester beat the Brewers on Wednesday (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). He has lost only one game since May 21. The Padres are 19-91 (.209) against him. Jay is 2-4 with a HR.

Now that he’s scratching PETCO off of his list, Lester will have pitched in all 30 parks, if that matters to you.

After being released by the Marlins, Jackson was picked up by the Padres and has pitched as expected in his six starts. His last game was a blowout in Tampa Bay, in which he gave up 8 ER in 4 innings. The Cubs are 23-77 (.299) against him. Montero is 6-15 with 2 HR.

Arrieta (15-5, 2.75) versus Friedrich (4-9, 4.69) tomorrow at 9:10pmCST to continue the series.

Go Cubs!

i like what he's doing, but he's only caught 26 games as a starter and filled in for a few innings in another 10 games. he gets up out of the crouch a lot quicker than was reported in the minors...dunno if that's just him amping it up or he got some further instruction on improving that clicked. with his arm, that should vastly improve his game behind the plate.

I think Contreras is going to be a fine regular ML catcher for several years, both defensively and offensively. I saw him in the Midwest League a couple of years ago, and noticed how mobile he was behind the plate. I don't know where the offense came from, but it appears legit, so the Cubs are in good shape for a while at catcher.

unpossible. the nationals babying-arms program keeps arm injuries from happening. all the injuries for multiple years now didn't really happen and THEY don't want you to know the real reason they keep having multiple starting pitchers taking time off for "arm injuries" (yeah right). espn = mainstream media = illuminati = can't melt steel beams = shooter on the grassy knoll = chemtrails. wake up sheeple.

"According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the recent clubhouse fight between Billy Butler and Danny Valencia was about an endorsement contract. Valencia was in talks with an equipment representative before Butler allegedly interjected regarding the use of some off-brand spikes and told him that the company should drop the endorsement deal. This led to a confrontation where Valencia allegedly punched Butler in the temple. Butler has dealt with nausea and vomiting since." ...a'ite then.

John Hickey Verified account ‏@JHickey3 Billy Butler is not on #Athletics roster. Arismendy Alcantara has been called up.

a.russell is a g'damn beast...18th HR. he's been doing a lot of that recently. ...and a sac fly next go around for the cubs 2nd run of the game and russell's 80th RBI on the season.

lester actually picks someone off...with a throw involved! meyers was taking a nearly-half-way-to-3rd leadoff of 2nd and lester threw the ball to baez and an out happened because that's what's supposed to happen.

Assist to Maddon in feeding the beast. Russell said very publicly how much he liked batting fifth - Maddon listened and gave him repeated opportunity there and he's taken off What was Castro's season high of HRs, 17?

Pat mentioned on the radio broadcast tonight that the highest RBI total by a Cub shortstop in the last 100+ years was by Roy Smalley Sr with 85

bryant hits #32...and the cubs get to have him on 1-year deals for a minimum of 4 more years if they want to drag it out like that. neat.

heyward HR! welcome back to the lineup.

grimm's last 15 games...july and august... 12.1ip 5h 2bb 16k, 0er looks like he's back on track after flailing for a while.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.
