Youch: Motte is out 3-4 weeks (shoulder), and Soler (oblique) is expected to miss a month. LaStella is activated to play 2b, and Rosscup is back. Castro fills in for Russell who’s day-to-day (groin tightness). And the pitcher bats 9th for the first time all season.

Lester is looking to bounce back from the shellacking he took from the Tigers on Wednesday (2.2 IP, 7 ER). It was his shortest and ugliest outing of the season. Over the last three years, he is 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA in his 4 games against the Indians. They are 20-82 (.244) against him. Brantley is 5-15.

Kluber has not been able to repeat his Cy Young success (18-9, 2.44) from last year. The Indians are fortunate not to have guaranteed more than $38.5m in the 5-year contract extension they gave him. He has been especially bad on the road, going 3-7 with a 4.17. He’s still dangerous, though, and capable of double-digit strikeouts on any given day. He lost in Boston his last time out (6 IP, 6 ER). Only Fowler and Montero (combined 0-7, 4 Ks) have faced him.

The Cubs are 1-2 against the Indians in their 2 short series so far this year. This is a makeup from the rain out on June 15. It would have been nice to use the off-day to head out west, but here we are.

Go Cubs!

Soler to DL hurts. Obliques are notoriously difficult to rehab. This likely means Coghlan/Denorfia in RF on a daily basis, with Schwarber in LF and either La Stella or Castro at 2B. And there is no OF depth in AAA other than Szczur who isn't much of a bat.

"No OF depth in AAA" I would say, no blue-chip outfield prospect, but a fair amount of depth. Andreoli has offensive numbers (this year and cumulative) that are strangely similar to Szczur's. Both are on-base types who steal 25 bases/year. Rubi Silva bats lefty and has a .487 SLG. Silva has only five walks, however, and the Cub brass won't like that and may not promote that. On the other hand, any discussion of Silva should include his 63 outfield assists over five seasons. They might want to promote that. Alcantara has mostly played second this season, and has scuffled at the plate, but you never know. Speed and power . . . And what about Baez? He has to play somewhere.

I think perhaps you misunderstood my point. I meant the big league team has no depth at AAA. The AAA team has lots of AAA outfielders. Andreoli and Silva are not prospects, have never played in the majors, and are not even on the 40-man roster. Neither would be called up to help the big league team. Baez has never played in the OF. He might be able to do so, perhaps in LF, but the idea that the Cubs would do this in the midst of a pennant chase is a bit of a stretch. Alcantara can certainly play the OF, though not terribly well, but hasn't been able to hit AAA pitching this year and so would not be a great additon to the big league lineup.

So now that Soler is down, both Coghlan (or Denorfia if its a LFHP) and Schwarber (even against LHPs) have to play everyday. And Szczur and Denorfia are the only back-ups. And if something happens to Fowler or Coghlan then we are really in trouble.

Bruce Levine reports Soler our for month On DL strained oblique, Lastella called up Motte out 3-4 weeks, Rosculp called up

Don't think so -- would be selling low, given his injury history and surprising lack of HRs this year. In addition to another notch on the injury belt, the real bummer is Soler (I assume he is done for the year) will miss getting pennant race and (hopefully) playoff experience and dealing with the Chicago media and fan expectations in those situations.

Conflicting reports on AR's absence from the lineup unless yours of "groin tightness" is just another way of saying that his fiancee's in labor as per the Twitter sidebar. If so, well-played!

Man that hurts...Soler was just starting to get hot and had a nice streak going. He has really battled too many injuries during his young career. The offense will certainly take a hit on that one.

K-Masters Well in looking this morning, the Cubs staff leads the league in K's. Very impressive. Also, top-5 in overall pitching. I just don't see how the Cards can sustain a team ERA in the 2's... Fuckers.

if anyone important goes down all STL has to do is call up any random 10-20th round pick no one's heard of and they'll put up MVP/CY numbers. that's the cardinals way...patent pending.

klubernohitter....klubernohitter.....klubernohitter....

CRUNCH: Considering Joe Maddon wears the same socks when the team is winning, I think you'd be able to somehow monetize your special "skill".

Thanks, crunch. Possibly funniest thing I've seen this year on the field.

Cubs go 14-3 on their 17 game "home stand" (including 3 at The Cell). Fan-damn-tastic. Bummer about Soler -- and I really hope Fowler's hand is OK.

Between the bad dive and the botched relay catch, Rizzo would've had an inside-the-park job if he'd run hard out of the box instead of staring at it. /complaintdept

Javy 4-4 with a HR and double so far tonight. He's probably not "Jappy" that LaStella got the call-up over him, particularly since Soler's injury leaves the Cubs with only one RH impact bat (and I don't mean David Ross).

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
